Chapter 1099: An Old Wolf Swipes Open the Beimen of Territory No. 3
Watching Wolf Lao Er's movements and expression, the newcomer was definitely a companion. Xia Qing turned to look at the northern buffer forest too, guessing which wolf it was. Of course, her favorite was Lao Si, because of Lao Si, then the handsome giant wolf, then the pack leader—hopefully not the stingy Broken-Waist Wolf.
After a short while, Xia Qing realized she had guessed wrong. Two beautiful red foxes, with a fox kit in tow, hopped over the wall worth 250,000 points and entered her territory.
It had been a while since their last visit. Hong Er Mao and Hong San Mao hung back, not daring to come closer. Hong Da Mao came over and sniffed Wolf Lao Er first, then ran up to Xia Qing, raised a pair of tea-brown eyes to look at her, and let out soft little whines.
Foxes have vertical pupils, more like a cat's eyes. By now the sun had already set, and the light intensity had dropped. To get better vision, Hong Da Mao's pupils had dilated—her eyes were dark, deep, and dewy. Paired with that reddish-brown coat and fluffy big tail, she instantly won the favor of King Zhou of Xia.
Xia Qing carried her vegetable basket into the small hut by the farmland, took out the insect-repellent powder, and petted each fox in turn.
The red foxes' coat color changes with the seasons and temperature. It was now early September; the two adult foxes' fur, which had been a rich, vivid reddish-brown at the turn of spring and summer, had now turned reddish-brown, but the texture was still wonderfully soft.
Healthy wild animals in the Evolution Forest all have ways of grooming their own fur. These three red foxes must have noticed that the old wolves that posed a threat to them inside Territory No. 3 had left, so they couldn't be bothered to groom themselves and had come to Xia Qing to mooch some medicine.
Xia Qing didn't begrudge the bit of powder. She groomed each fox's coat, then cheerfully invited them to stay a few more days in the territory.
The snakes, bugs, rats, and ants that had crawled out during the Calamity Rain in Territory No. 3 hadn't been cleared out yet. Three more foxes helping her and Wolf Lao Er clean up the territory was more than welcome—Xia Qing couldn't have asked for more.
But Xia Qing's happy reversal was short-lived, because at a little past four in the morning, a weary old wolf swiped open the north gate and entered her territory.
Xia Qing, who had been sleeping soundly, fished out her phone for a look. Recognizing a familiar wolf, and seeing it didn't look like an emergency, she put the phone down, turned over, and went back to sleep.
"Slap, screech—"
The old wolf greeted Wolf Lao Er, and when it saw Xia Qing wasn't coming out, it raised a forepaw and slapped the window. Because it was very tired, when the paw came down, its sharp claws scraped the glass, and the sound was extremely grating to someone with evolved hearing.
It seemed the old wolf hadn't come back to stay—it had business.
Xia Qing got up, put on her protective suit, and went downstairs. She glanced at the tightly shut sheepfold door, took out a tube of fresh-squeezed spinach juice nutrient solution, poured it into pollution-free spring water, and after the old wolf drank, she asked, "Lao Si, what's wrong?"
The old wolf, its fur somewhat disheveled, fixed a pair of green-glowing night-vision eyes on the pocket of Xia Qing's protective suit.
Xia Qing asked, "Do you need medicine?"
The old wolf turned and headed outside, then looked back at Xia Qing.
Xia Qing gestured and asked again, "Is it your companion who needs the medicine? You want me to go take a look at your companion?"
The old wolf bared its mouth, revealing grayish-white fangs. The tiny droplets of water clinging to the white fur around its muzzle dripped down onto the dirt below.
Was it those three wolves she'd rescued last time?
After communicating with the old wolf through gestures for a while, Xia Qing learned that its companions were near West District Mountain No. 26, and there were more than just those three from last time. Her mind began to spin rapidly, and she started negotiating.
"My medicine is all bought with points. I treated you because Wolf Lao Er gave me a piece of Use Yishi, a stone like this. If Lao Si wants me to treat your companions, you'll need to pay me a fee."
Xia Qing pulled out a real Use Yishi and showed it to the old wolf. The lonely, damp old wolf sniffed the stone, glanced at Wolf Lao Er grinning happily beside it, then turned its head and looked at Xia Qing solemnly.
"I know, Lao Si doesn't have Yi Stones, and doesn't have herbs either." Xia Qing pulled up a picture of the Blind Tiger to show it. "Does Lao Si still remember this evolved tiger? You and the Queen, and Wolf Lao Er, delivered medicine to this tiger once, just a few days ago, at Mountain No. 37."
The old wolf already knew what the pictures on the phone meant. It stared for a while, then bared its fangs.
"You take me to find this tiger first, and trade with it for the evolved Purple Flower Ground Ivy in its territory. Then I'll go treat your companions and deliver the medicine. How about it?"
After Xia Qing went back and forth communicating several times, the old wolf finally understood what she meant, and slowly bared its fangs.
"Lao Si, you're really too smart! Come on, let's go back inside, I'll give you a bath and apply some medicine. You rest a bit, then we'll set off!" Xia Qing warmly invited the old wolf inside, groomed its fur and applied medicine, then fed it freeze-dried food and anti-inflammatory medicine, and took a saliva sample.
After the old wolf had eaten its fill and been bathed, it lay resting on its ruined throne. Xia Qing finished testing its Calamity and Yi element content.
Calamity element 15‰, Yi element 3.3?. It had been infected with parasites and not fully cured before returning to the Evolution Forest. Its current physical condition was only slightly better than when it had first entered Territory No. 3 in late July.
If Xia Qing hadn't fed it a dose of Calamity-Reduction Agent, its condition would have been even worse. This old wolf had found its companions and definitely wouldn't have stayed in the territory for treatment—the territory where its pack lived was simply too far from Xia Qing's territory. It couldn't possibly come over morning and evening every day to take medicine…
After gazing for a while at the sky outside the window, which was already growing light, Xia Qing first contacted Hu Zifeng and Huo Zhun, asking them to team up with her for a mission.
Then Xia Qing asked Zheng Chen and learned that her idol had been in the lab all night and hadn't come out yet. Summoning her courage, she dialed the idol's number.
"You'd better have something important." Zhang San's voice was thick with fury.
"Third Brother, sorry for disturbing you so early. It's something important." Xia Qing answered carefully. "Didn't I promise you I'd go to the West District Evolution Forest this morning to find a tiger and trade for herbs? Because I'm not familiar with that tiger, I first found the old wolf that knows it well—the old wolf that stayed in my territory for a couple of months to treat its parasite infection…"
"Get to the point."
"Right. The old wolf's condition has worsened, and there's no way to keep it in the territory for slow treatment. So I need to trade with you for a special-effect medicine for this condition. May I send you the lab report?"
Zhang San's voice was icy. "I told you, until the lab in your territory is built, that room is to be sealed and the instruments suspended from use."
Xia Qing answered with an overwhelming will to survive, "Third Brother, because I need to regularly test plant quality, before sealing the lab I moved the Yi element detector out."
After a few seconds of silence, Zhang San roared, "Don't let me lay eyes on you!"
After the idol hung up, Xia Qing took a deep breath, printed a lab report, then used her cracked-screen phone to photograph it clearly, edited it neatly, and carefully sent it to the idol.
Although the idol had howled, he hadn't said she couldn't send the lab report, so she had to send it.
Actually, Xia Qing would have preferred to save a sheet of print paper and just photograph the electronic display screen of the detector with her phone, but photos taken that way would have colored ripples, and you could faintly see the shadow of her head in them—it didn't meet the idol's standards.
Then, while packing her backpack, Xia Qing waited anxiously.
Fifteen minutes later, Xia Qing's phone rang. Zheng Chen called, "Xia Qing, the Lord told me to come over now and deliver the medicine to you."
Xia Qing breathed a sigh of relief, her voice calm. "Okay, sorry to trouble you, Brother Zheng. I'll wait for you at the north gate."
Zheng Chen acknowledged, then added, "This medicine is worth 60,000 points, and it's an on-site transaction."
Xia Qing……
Losing out, losing out big time!!!
If she'd known the special-effect medicine was this expensive, she would have rather knocked all the old wolf's companions unconscious, stuffed them into a helicopter, and hauled them back for treatment than bother the idol.
