Chapter 1359: Xia Qing's Countermeasure
"This isn't Tenth Sister's fault—it's mine. Canines live within human territory as human companions. To treat canine illnesses and understand what canine teeth look like, humans made this kind of model."
This really was a case of Xia Qing's cleverness backfiring. Hunting dogs brought into Evolution Forest by humans had clashed with wolf packs, so the wolves were hostile toward hunting dogs—but she hadn't expected that using a canine-tooth model to explain wolf teeth would trigger such strong resistance in the two wolves.
Xia Qing continued explaining, "Wolves live in Evolution Forest, and right now there aren't any human wolf-family dentists, nor any wolf-tooth models. That's why I got a canine-tooth model from Territory Seven."
Duan Yao raised a paw and pointed at Zhang Shi behind Xia Qing.
Xia Qing explained, "Duan Yao—Tenth Sister used to treat human dental problems. Lao Si was the first sick wolf Tenth Sister was going to treat."
The point of conflict had been found, and now that it was resolved, Xia Qing asked, "Tenth Sister, how do Duan Yao's teeth look?"
The tense Zhang Shi immediately nodded. Though her voice trembled a little, she answered rigorously, "Brother Duan's teeth are very even, and the tooth quality and bite are also very standard."
Xia Qing looked at the two wolves and proposed a solution. "Let's go up right now and do a full-mouth dental CT on Duan Yao. Then I'll send it to Territory Seven and ask Third Brother to use the 3D printer to print a set of Duan Yao's tooth models. From now on, when Tenth Sister treats Evolution wolves' teeth, she'll use Duan Yao's tooth model so every wolf knows what the most beautiful, most even teeth on the whole Blue Planet should look like. Duan Yao, do you think this plan works?"
Duan Yao's magnetic field immediately softened, and he bared his mouth, revealing those most beautiful, most even teeth on the whole Blue Planet.
"Good, then we'll do it that way." Xia Qing also said to Lao Si, "After Lao Si receives the dental treatment, next year he'll have a set of equally even, beautiful, and sharp teeth. When that time comes, I'll ask Third Brother to make Lao Si a tooth model too and put it here, so other wolves will know just how amazing regenerated teeth can be."
The old wolf remained stern, but his magnetic field also calmed. He stared at Zhang Shi, waiting for her to state her position.
Hearing Xia Qing's promise, Zhang Shi—who had just relaxed—felt a thousand-pound weight settle on her shoulders. She steeled herself and made a pledge to the first patient she would see after re-employment:
"Yes."
Zhang Shi was now desperate to see Zhang San and nail down the detailed treatment plan for the first sick wolf. Zhang Shi had only one requirement: she must use the best medicines and treatment materials to restore this patient's teeth to optimal condition.
If Zhang San disagreed because of cost, Zhang Shi was willing to chip in her own points.
Because if she failed to fulfill today's promise, a medical dispute was very likely. After she left Territory Three and returned to Evolution Forest, she would certainly be hunted down by this wolf.
If she fulfilled the promise and satisfied this Evolution wolf, after returning to Evolution Forest she might gain this wolf's protection and survive within its territory.
Go for it!
After scanning Duan Yao's teeth, then examining the baby teeth of the second wolf patient—Little Wolf Sister—and incidentally giving an oral checkup to the little wolf with a scar on its face called Scarface Wolf, Zhang Shi didn't even have time to say a word to Xia Qing before she rushed back to the underground workshop.
Seeing Ye Yiyi calmly holding her phone watching cows eat grass, Zhang Shi poured her a glass of water, then opened her laptop and tap-tap-tapped out detailed examination records for the three wolves, and began drafting the old wolf's treatment plan.
Only after drafting the preliminary plan could she send it to Zhang San and ask him to correct it.
Zhang Shi was busy, and so was Xia Qing, who had seen off the wolf pack—busy sorting today's harvest.
【22】 The leftover meat from Wolf Lao Er was frozen and stored. The yellow-light mountain walnuts were first screened by Employee No. 001. After screening, portions were set aside for her good friend's bird and her own family's monkey and squirrel, two hundred jin were left for Yang Jin, and the rest was sent to Territory Seven—along with Duan Yao's tooth-scan data, which she delivered to her idol, asking him to send someone to use the 3D printer as soon as possible to print a standard wolf-tooth model.
Wolf Lao Er's leftover meat was frozen and stored. The yellow-light hickory nuts were first given to Employee No. 001 for a round of selection. After the selection, a portion was set aside for the bird at a good friend's house and the monkey and squirrel at his own home, two hundred jin were reserved for Yang Jin, and the rest were all sent to Territory Seven. He also took the chance to hand the idol the scan data of the Broken-Waist Wolf's teeth, asking him to send someone to use the 3D printer as soon as possible to print a standard set of wolf-tooth models.
Xia Qing sent Zhang Shi a message, then said to her companions, "I'm heading to Territory Seven—I'll be back in a bit. Boss, Lao Er, I'm leaving the territory to you."
Sheep Boss was burying her head in the green-light grass Xia Qing had brought back for her, hearing nothing at all.
Lao Er, already full, grinned and flashed Xia Qing a happy smile.
The two Daigua were squatting on a tree branch gnawing the mountain walnuts Xia Qing had rewarded them with—no reaction either.
Little Feimao? Was in its nest, tinkering with the new strong-hair that Xia Qing had just given it.
Xia Qing didn't actually need her companions to respond—she was just checking in before putting on her protective suit and heading out. Lao Er followed right behind, and Sheep Boss also trotted out carrying the last stalk of grass in her mouth.
Daigua, who was digging out mountain-walnut kernels with her little black paws, stared at Sheep Boss's food bowl for a few seconds, then still hopped down from the tree branch. Using the rag she had washed clean that morning, she swept the shredded grass leaves on the table into the food bowl, then carried the bowl to the kitchen.
Outside, after Xia Qing drove the off-road vehicle away from the wasteland village, she parked the car beside the southern wasteland grass wall.
Then she opened the car door and jumped out. First she lifted Sheep Boss down from the passenger seat, then lifted Lao Er down from the back seat, rubbed their necks and whispered a few instructions, then cleaned the protective suit and the fur in the car, carefully sprayed a layer of scent-isolation agent, and only then drove away from the territory.
Down in the basement, little Ye Yiyi held her phone, staring unblinkingly at the sheep and wolf standing by the wasteland grass wall.
After Xia Qing drove off into the distance, Sheep Boss and Lao Er split up—one went to patrol the territory, the other went to find its cud-chewing buddy.
Watching the two fluffy animals move farther and farther apart, little Ye Yiyi hesitated for a moment, then used her pale little finger to select the snow-white Sheep Boss's direction of travel.
Zhang Shi, who was mulling over the treatment plan, saw Ye Yiyi skillfully switch cameras, then keep tapping to zoom in, her gaze following that Evolution sheep until it entered the forage shed.
It was nearly noon now. The rainproof cloth of the forage shed had been rolled up, and through a layer of fine insect-proof netting, Ye Yiyi could still see that snow-white sheep walk over to the little yellow cow, lie down, and chew cud together—one sheep, one cow.
This scene was so healing that it made Zhang Shi involuntarily think of the peaceful-era pastures of before the apocalypse. She asked softly, "Does Yiyi want to go out and see the sheep and the cows? Stand right next to them and look."
This time, Ye Yiyi gave Zhang Shi's question a quick and direct response. She raised her head and looked at Zhang Shi, her eyes full of longing.
Zhang Shi felt both happy and a pang of heartache. She answered gently, "Auntie Qing drove out—she'll be back in a bit with food and take us to her place for a meal. After we eat, I'll ask her to take Yiyi to see the cows and the sheep, okay?"
Ye Yiyi lowered her head, switched the surveillance screen on her phone, found the camera by the wasteland grass wall that showed tire tracks, and quietly waited for Xia Qing to come back and take her to see the cows and the sheep.
