Chapter 163: The Injured Sheep Boss

~8 min read 1,404 words

Sheep Boss squinted at Xia Qing's hand for a few seconds, didn't let her take the compressed rations, and carried both wolves out in his mouth.

Xia Qing could tell Sheep Boss wasn't comfortable either—walking with a wolf in his mouth, he kept stumbling.

She immediately stood up and helped open the security door so Sheep Boss could drag the wolves out smoothly. Just as Sheep Boss stepped outside, Xia Qing heard movement by the tatami and turned to find the brain-evolved wolf with the injured waist had, using its two still-weak front legs, crawled down off the tatami.

Noticing Xia Qing looking at it, the injured wolf stopped and raised its eyes to look at her.

It was… not wanting Sheep Boss to drag it out?

While Xia Qing was still hesitating whether to go help, Sheep Boss was already clip-clopping back, grabbed the brain-evolved wolf by the neck in his mouth, and started dragging it outside.

Xia Qing…

Fine, leave it like that.

Xia Qing first stuffed a piece of rations into the hard-working Sheep Boss, then put on clean gloves, took the share of animal offal she'd saved for the wolves out to the yard, cut open the sealed bag and placed it in front of the sheep shed. "This is the good food I promised you two—offal from green-light chickens, green-light geese, and yellow-light geese. Have a taste, it's fresh."

Inside the sheep shed, the broken-legged wolf's gaze at Xia Qing had lost some of its ferocity, but it still carried full wariness. The brain-evolved wolf looked at Xia Qing for a while, then began crawling outward.

Xia Qing noticed that when the brain-evolved wolf crawled, its two hind legs could move along too, though they still couldn't bear much weight. She used a stick to shift the bag toward the brain-evolved wolf so it had fewer steps to crawl. "Your injuries look much better—congratulations."

The brain-evolved wolf crawled to the offal and slowly began eating.

Seeing it eat, the broken-legged wolf also crawled out. Its movements were clearly faster than the brain-evolved wolf's—once the splint on its hind leg was removed, it would probably be able to move freely.

Her two SVIP customers were about to check out. She wondered whether the wolf pack would give her a little tip.

No, now wasn't the time to think about tips. What worried Xia Qing more was whether the wolf pack, which might have been hit by the ultrasonic attack, could still come deliver food to the injured wolves.

After cleaning up the living room floor and putting a fresh straw mat down for Sheep Boss, the room finally returned to a state that put her at ease, and Xia Qing dropped straight into a chair to rest for half an hour. When mealtime came, she got up, fished out five chickens and one goose from the big pot, and delivered them to Beard Feng's squad at Territory One, thanking them for guarding her territory today.

Then Xia Qing made a special trip to Gao Po, pulled some tender leaves from the big camphor tree to mix into Sheep Boss's concentrate, then stuffed an entire stewed-soft chicken and goose into her own stomach, and fell into bed asleep.

Though today's battle hadn't lasted long, the ultrasonic attack had still caused Xia Qing's body some invisible damage. She was now dizzy and heavy-headed, in desperate need of rest.

After sleeping two hours, Xia Qing woke feeling much better, and turned on the lord's walkie-talkie to catch up on the latest developments in the surrounding territories.

The moment she switched it on, Xia Qing heard Zhao Ze crying about his heavy losses:

"For these two months I've been serving them like the Cihouzu Sect, counting on the chickens growing up to lay eggs and improve life—and now there's nothing left."

Zhang San's resource trades had always been fair; the two yellow-light chicks traded to Territories Four and Five were both hens.

Kuang Qingwei, who hadn't managed to swap for chicks, made a snide remark: "Sure, you won't get eggs, but you've got chicken meat, haven't you? Having meat to eat isn't bad."

"My crops got smashed by hail, and my house got torn apart by evolved birds—how could I have the heart to eat meat?" Zhao Ze said in a tearful voice. This burly man over 1.9 meters tall would wail a couple times to play the victim whether something was wrong or not—everyone was long used to it.

Hearing that he wouldn't eat the meat, Kuang Qingwei immediately grew interested. "Not eating it? Want to trade? How would you swap?"

Zhao Ze stated his trade conditions: "I want bamboo poles and insect netting—my greenhouse got torn apart by evolved birds."

"Deal."

After some haggling they reached a deal, and Kuang Qingwei asked Qi Fu again: "Sister Qi, what about your chickens? Trading or not?"

Hit by the same ultrasonic attack, the chickens in Territory Four had died—of course the ones in Territory Five couldn't have survived either. But Territory Five's choice differed from Territory Four's.

Yuan Yan refused crisply: "Not trading."

Kuang Qingwei immediately replied: "Chicken soup is the best for the body. Brother Qi got hurt and really needs to build himself back up. Just say what you're short of, sis, and I'll bring it over."

Yuan Yan gave a brief reply, and the lord channel fell silent.

Through this incident, Xia Qing felt the cellar was a good thing—not only could it shield from birds in the sky, it could also block part of the ultrasonic attack.

All the chickens and geese in Territories Four, Five, and Ten had died. The fact that most of her own poultry survived was because she'd put them in the cellar.

Xia Qing flexed the fingers of her right hand and sat up on the bed. Even Zhao Ze, who this morning had been crying to go back to the safe zone, was now wiping his tears and thinking about how to patch his greenhouse—Xia Qing couldn't afford to idle either.

She put on her protective suit and went downstairs, about to head to the fields, only to find Sheep Boss's concentrate bowl hadn't been finished.

This was a first. Xia Qing sat down on the tatami straw mat, stroked Sheep Boss's head, and asked in a gentle voice: "Boss not feeling well?"

"Baa…"

Sheep Boss let out a feeble bleat, couldn't even open his eyes—only the scabbed wound on his face was twitching. However you looked at him, he was pitiful.

Her own chest and head were uncomfortable at the moment too, and Xia Qing could tough it out, but Sheep Boss suffering like this—she couldn't stand it. "Boss, wait a bit, I'll get you something good to eat."

Xia Qing went outside, saw the wolves hadn't finished the offal either, and big flies were already buzzing around it. She immediately scooped the offal up and tossed it into the snake-raising box.

With this little offal, even two wolves hadn't been able to finish it—clearly her two SVIP lodgers weren't feeling well either. Xia Qing had thumped her chest and promised the lead wolf she'd take good care of its team members.

Xia Qing took her basket and headed straight for the green-light spinach terraces on the hillside breeding area. Because there was no shortage of fertile water, the second crop of green-light spinach growing in the terraces—with a Yi element content as high as six ten-thousandths—was growing fast; the biggest leaves on the seedlings were already a finger's length.

Although the high-Yi-element green-light spinach was a treasure, no treasure was more precious than her companion Sheep Boss. Spinach could be replanted if lost, but if Sheep Boss was gone, the entire territory would be left with only her.

Xia Qing squatted on the ridge and picked off the bigger tender leaves. Though she only took one leaf per plant, she soon had nearly half a basket.

Carrying the basket home, Xia Qing handed Sheep Boss a few tender leaves. "Boss, this is good stuff—have a taste?"

Because she was afraid Sheep Boss would wreck the seedlings, Xia Qing had always ringed the green-light seedlings with thorns—Sheep Boss couldn't reach them even stretching his neck.

Sheep Boss lifted his nose to sniff, immediately ate the spinach leaves, then opened his big dazzling goat eyes and gazed at Xia Qing with a bright shine.
