Chapter 838: Rushing to the Negotiation Site
Six giant bears against over forty evolved wolves—if they fought, this mountain region would be ruined. Xia Qing decided to move today's most important spoils of war—the helicopter—away first.
The prisoners and the weapons and gear they carried on them?
The four poachers Xia Qing had shot at the start had already been moved onto the enemy helicopter and should still be alive. As for the six-person squad that had fought Xia Qing, how many were still alive would have to wait until the wolves and bears finished their talks.
Xia Qing's gaze left the handsome giant wolf that had already rejoined the lead wolf. "Brother Huo, can you fix that helicopter down there?"
Every time Huo Lei saw Xia Qing, he had to mutter a few words about how his son might not be promising, but he did have some skills. Xia Qing remembered that fixing aircraft was among them.
Huo Zhun indeed nodded and made an OK gesture in front of Xia Qing.
"That helicopter definitely has spare parts. Let's go down, fix it up, and fly it away—before the bears and wolves start fighting and wreck the helicopter." Xia Qing pulled on a black face mask to hide her features; she didn't want the people on the enemy helicopter to see what she looked like.
After putting on her protective mask and picking up her pack, Xia Qing turned to Yanlong and said, "Sister Yan, lower the altitude a bit so Brother Huo can jump down with me."
Xia Qing didn't know how to fix a helicopter, but if she didn't go, Huo Zhun couldn't fix it either, because the helicopter was surrounded by wolves.
The speed-evolved giant bear was heading straight for the anesthetized bear. Fortunately, the helicopter wasn't in its direct path.
Xia Qing had never learned to parachute, but Huo Zhun definitely had. He was a strength- and elasticity-type Evolver and a special forces operative—taking someone parachuting should be a piece of cake for him.
Yanlong didn't lower the altitude. "If the helicopter drops any lower, the noise will be taken as provocation by the evolved bears and wolves. At this altitude, Huo Zhun can land safely with you. Just relax your body and don't interfere with him."
"Understood." Xia Qing finished reading the text Xin Yu had typed out and walked toward Huo Zhun, who had already changed into his wingsuit and had the parachute pack on his back.
Before Xin Yu could act, Zhang Song had efficiently strapped Xia Qing to Huo Zhun's front with binding straps.
Then Zhang Song patted Xia Qing's shoulder to tell her not to be afraid, and discussed with Huo Zhun, "Brother Huo, if you get the chance later, take me flying too?"
"As long as the Overlord agrees." Huo Zhun finished speaking, pulled open the cabin door, and jumped.
The lead wolf glanced at Xia Qing and Huo Zhun leaping from the helicopter, then continued howling.
The Broken-Waist wolf only glanced at her once, then went back to watching the charging giant bear.
The handsome giant wolf? Saw them and pretended it hadn't.
The charging giant bear stopped, panted heavily as it watched the humans in the air for a few seconds, then kept running.
The cub in the stone hollow was blocked by rocks and couldn't see anything.
The Daigua monkey lying on the ground still stared at the sky with unfocused eyes.
Only the wolf-dog Wolf Lao Er immediately ran to directly below the descending Xia Qing, wanting to catch her.
Being carried down while jumping felt completely different from flying on her own single-person flight device. Holding her pack, Xia Qing had only one thought in her head: she had to learn parachuting as soon as possible. Next time something like this happened, she would jump down herself.
"Thud!"
When they were still over four hundred meters from the ground, Huo Zhun deployed the parachute. The canopy quickly caught the air and slowed their rapid descent.
The wolves and bears both looked up for a moment. Wolf Lao Er couldn't help but let out a howl, very worried about Xia Qing's safety.
"Lao Er, don't be afraid. I'm fine, doing great." Seeing Lao Er on the ground looking up, Xia Qing's heart went soft, and she shouted to it as loudly as she could.
When the two of them were only about ten meters above the treetops, Xia Qing unbuckled the straps, jumped onto a tree, and reunited with Lao Er below. Huo Zhun gathered the parachute and followed.
By then, the bear that had been leading the way had already reached the stone hollow and reunited with its cub. The lead wolf stood on a tall rock, watching the cub climb out from the crevice—its body still not very agile. The big bear lowered its head to sniff its child, then raised its head and let out a roar. The bears still approaching in the distance heard the sound and slowed their advance.
The two humans and one wolf arrived beneath the big banyan tree cradling the helicopter. Ignoring the six evolved wolves baring their teeth and snarling at him, Huo Zhun gazed at the helicopter and sighed, "It actually landed on a banyan tree. That pilot's got some skill."
If it had been a thorny tree instead, the fuselage would definitely have been scratched up.
Lao Er went over and exchanged sniffs with the six wolves guarding the helicopter, after which the six wolves no longer blocked the two humans. Xia Qing pointed her sniper rifle at the poacher hiding inside the cabin with both hands raised in surrender. Huo Zhun held his gun in one hand and gestured with the other for him to open the cabin.
This sole remaining poacher was the helicopter's pilot. He had already been scared out of his wits by the giant bear that had just charged past, and wished nothing more than for the two fellow humans to drag him straight back to a human base. If he stayed here any longer, he was sure the bears would tear him apart.
Huo Zhun jumped into the helicopter, first restrained the local pilot, questioned him about the helicopter's condition, then tied him up tight, sealed his mouth, pulled a black bag over his head, and tossed him beside the four unconscious poachers. He waved Xia Qing over.
Lao Er stayed below with its companions. Xia Qing climbed onto the helicopter. Huo Zhun had already typed on his phone: This pilot already swapped the helicopter's main rotor hub, just didn't have time to reinforce it. That was close. Give me fifteen minutes—I'll reinforce it and swap out the deformed tail rotor blade, and then we can take off.
Xia Qing gave an OK gesture. Taking advantage of the moment, she tied up the four poachers in the cabin—whose bullet wounds had already been given emergency treatment—then began examining her helicopter. The more she looked, the more satisfied she was.
The helicopter was about half new, with cabin space for fifteen people—much bigger and newer than the one she'd ridden when fighting the giant eagle last time.
After a quick look, Xia Qing also left the cabin, drew her blade, and went to chop away the branches that would be hit when the rotor spun.
While they were fixing the helicopter, five giant bears caught up and joined the lead bear, shielding the cub in their midst and beginning to roar back at the wolves.
Wolf howls were still tolerable, but the bear roars felt like they were slamming directly into the heart. Huo Zhun felt unwell, cast an envious glance at Xia Qing who was chopping wood as usual, and sped up. Once the aircraft was fixed, Huo Zhun immediately returned to the cabin, started the helicopter, confirmed everything was fine, and gave Xia Qing a hand signal.
Xia Qing nodded. Just as she was about to tell Lao Er she was taking off, she saw the six wolves surrounding the helicopter turn in unison and sprint toward the battlefield. No need to ask—things were getting tight over there, and the lead wolf was gathering its pack. Xia Qing, whose tinnitus symptoms were severe, couldn't hear it. Still, she confirmed the two sides hadn't started fighting yet, because no wolves or bears had been seen leaping over there.
"Aoo—" Lao Er called to Xia Qing, ran a couple of steps, saw that Xia Qing hadn't followed, stopped, and looked back at her.
Although she didn't know what Lao Er was summoning her for, this incident had been caused by human poachers—both the injured bear and monkey carried human scent on them. Just because the wolves had come to help didn't mean humans could stand aside and dump the mess on the wolf pack.
Xia Qing waved to signal Huo Zhun to fly the helicopter away first. She was going to follow Lao Er to the negotiation site and find a way to defuse the evolved bears' fury.
