Chapter 105

~5 min read 1,000 words

Allen picked up the book, blew off the dust, and spread it open on the table.

The entire book was handwritten, filled with numerous ancient Runes, some of which had English annotations beneath them...

Allen flipped through the book rapidly; based on his current knowledge of Runes, most of the ancient Rune shapes were correct, and most of the annotations for the Runes he recognized were accurate—but the book also contained many Runes he didn’t know, each with annotations written beside them...

Allen instantly realized the book’s immense value.

He pulled Ron to his feet and asked urgently, “Where did you get the book you use to prop up the table leg?”

Ron looked confused—how had Allen, who had been so down just moments ago, suddenly become so eager? “I found it in my basement! Nobody could understand it, so I used it to prop up the table! It’s incredibly sturdy—I’ve been using it for four or five years, and it still shows no signs of damage...”

Ron’s words jolted Allen.

Of course! In Allen’s experience, parchment bearing so many ancient Runes would have self-ignited long ago! Yet this book showed no sign of harm...

This discovery confirmed the book’s extraordinary nature even further...

“Do you have any other books like this?” Allen asked.

Ron glanced at him. “Not anymore, but I can keep an eye out for you—there are tons of old books in my basement...”

Allen wanted to drag Ron straight to the basement right now, but doing so would be rude—he forced himself to suppress the urge.

“Could I borrow this book for a few days?” Allen asked Ron.

Ron waved his hand dismissively. “Just keep it. It’s useless to me.”

“I’ll copy it and return it to you!” Allen felt uneasy accepting it outright, especially since Ron didn’t know its value. “I think this book is extremely precious...”

Ron made no comment, but he silently accepted Allen’s decision.

All afternoon, Allen was utterly absorbed in the book’s knowledge, while Ron happily played Quidditch and chased gnomes with Harry.

They invited Allen to join them several times, but he politely declined each time...

Allen found an unfamiliar name in the book—Bell Weasley.

“Bell Weasley? That sounds like one of my ancestors. You know the Weasley family has many members—I can’t remember them all,” Ron replied.

Allen stared at Ron in shock—he felt he was beginning to grasp something!

Is this the depth of the Sacred Twenty-Eight families? No wonder a dying camel is still bigger than a horse! Allen felt he now understood everything...

Allen stayed at Ron’s house for two days, then returned to Diagon Alley—he was only allowed two days off per week, and he was eager to test his recent research on ancient Runes; besides, there were too many Weasleys at home—he’d never had a chance to conduct experiments.

After returning to Ollivander’s Wand Shop, Allen locked himself in his room and began copying the ancient Rune notebook.

He pulled out an old notebook at random and started transcribing.

But he accidentally copied one extra ancient Rune on a page—the parchment couldn’t withstand it and burst into flames; by the time Allen noticed, half the notebook was already burned.

Watching half a day’s work vanish, Allen couldn’t help but feel discouraged...

Then he suddenly remembered a notebook from a few days ago whose pages he couldn’t tear off.

Allen realized this wasn’t simple.

He gathered all his old notebooks and counted them—there were eleven, not ten. He’d bought ten, so why eleven? But he didn’t dwell on it—he found the notebook he’d used to write the letter, and the writing was still there.

Allen held the notebook up close.

He examined it carefully: its outer cover was a tattered black leather, thin overall...

He patiently flipped through every page—nothing but his own previous writing appeared on them.

He tried tearing the parchment—no matter how hard he pulled, it wouldn’t tear. He tried every page, but the result was the same.

Allen’s interest surged—he used a Transfiguration spell to turn a book on the table into a pair of scissors and tried cutting the notebook, but still couldn’t damage it.

His curiosity deepened—he placed the notebook directly on a candle flame. Minutes passed, but the fire left not a single mark.

Allen’s heart leapt—he realized he’d found a treasure.

He thought eagerly: I should wander more through Diagon Alley’s shops—turns out you really can stumble upon hidden gems!

Then a thought struck him: if this indestructible notebook could record ancient Runes, wouldn’t it be perfect?

He’d spent a year searching for a safe medium to transcribe ancient Runes—and now, without seeking it, the solution had come to him.

But how many ancient Runes this notebook could hold still needed testing.

Filled with renewed energy, Allen began transcribing.

He first copied ten ancient Runes onto one page and watched silently for half a day—the parchment showed no change.

This boosted his confidence: ordinary parchment, he dared write only two Runes at a time.

This time, bolder, he filled an entire page with about thirty to forty Runes, then observed for another half-hour—the parchment remained unchanged.

Allen was overcome with elation—he finally copied Runes onto the reverse side as well. The result: the parchment fully withstood the power of the ancient Runes.

Allen’s energy surged—he decided to stay up all night, transcribing every ancient Rune he knew, so future research would be far easier.

Just as he’d copied half the notebook, he suddenly noticed all the writing on it had vanished.

As Allen stood bewildered, the notebook displayed a new line:

“Please stop writing ancient Runes! It makes me very uncomfortable!”

Allen shot to his feet, wand already in hand, pointed at the notebook.

The notebook’s text appeared faster now.

“I won’t harm you, and I can’t harm you! You can’t harm me either!”

“Calm down! Let’s talk properly!”

“My name is Tom Yoder...”
