Chapter 160: First Encounter with the Basilisk
Allen Finis slept very soundly that night; he didn't have any strange dreams the entire night...
The next morning, he discovered his hair was gone, transformed into a Mohawk-style crest of feathers, with red and yellow plumes intermingled, their colors distinct, striking, and beautiful.
He knew he had randomly obtained the crest of some bird, but he didn't know which bird's crest it was.
However, since this transformation wouldn't affect his life, he didn't pay it much mind.
Hermione, on the other hand, was very interested in his feather crest, saying she wanted to go to the library to look up information on this kind of bird; Allen Finis did not support this idea, as looking things up in an era without search engines was too laborious.
While eating breakfast, he received a letter from Mr. Newt Scamander, which read as follows:
Dear Allen,
I was glad to receive your letter, and although I don't know why you have suddenly become interested in Basilisks, I will tell you all the knowledge I possess regarding them.
A Basilisk is a giant venomous snake, also known as the King of Serpents. It is a creature bred by Dark Wizards. Herpo the Foul was the first to breed a Basilisk: he hatched a chicken egg beneath a toad, resulting in this creature known as the Basilisk. Since the Middle Ages, breeding Basilisks has been considered illegal, but this act is easy to conceal, as one only needs to remove the egg from beneath the toad before personnel from the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures arrive.
A Basilisk can grow up to fifty feet long, with deep green skin, yellow eyes, and fangs resembling thin, long swords. The eyes of a Basilisk can instantly kill any person or animal whose gaze meets theirs. The surface of a Basilisk's skin is covered in scales that can deflect spells. Like other snakes, Basilisks periodically shed their skin as they grow.
Basilisks are extremely dangerous to wizards, primarily due to their massive size, highly toxic venom, lethal gaze, and snake scales with extremely strong defensive capabilities.
Wizards currently have no effective method to defend against the lethal gaze of a Basilisk; most spells are deflected by its outer skin, and its venom can kill a person within minutes, causing drowsiness, blurred vision, and hallucinations before death.
Given sufficient food, a Basilisk has a lifespan of at least nine hundred years. Basilisks prey on all mammals, birds, and reptiles.
Their fatal weakness is the crowing of a rooster; upon hearing a rooster's call, a Basilisk will flee in panic, as the sound is lethal to it.
In Britain, there have been no recorded sightings of a Basilisk for at least four hundred years.
This is all the information I know regarding Basilisks; I hope it proves helpful to you.
Additionally, I have received the photograph of your transfiguration into dragon scales from that time; it was quite incredible. I hope your next letter can further describe your recent innate transfigurations, as I am very interested in this.
Finally, I wish you success in your studies.
Newt Scamander.
After finishing the letter, Allen Finis immediately noticed the Basilisk's weakness; he hadn't expected the Basilisk's weakness to be so simple...
He immediately opened his diary and wrote: Defeating a Basilisk is easy! Just find a few roosters, or use my innate transfiguration to create a rooster's throat, and it can be defeated very easily.
"Do you think doing this will earn my approval?" Neat text from Yodel appeared on the diary page.
Allen Finis could imagine the tsundere expression Yodel must have worn when saying this, and he was momentarily rendered speechless by Yodel's words.
"Hurry up and retrieve my separated consciousness! It has been over twelve hours already," the diary quickly displayed more text.
Only then did Allen Finis remember he had forgotten to retrieve it, so he hastily bid farewell to Harry Potter and the other two, then ran out of Hogwarts Castle.
When he found the tree hollow from yesterday, a cloud of silvery-white mist was floating inside it.
Allen Finis quickly opened the diary, and that cloud of silvery-white mist was rapidly absorbed by the diary...
Then he hurriedly made his way back,
after all, there were classes in the morning...
Throughout the day, Allen Finis pondered how to deal with the Basilisk, especially under circumstances where he could not utilize its weakness.
However, he soon realized he was still lacking some crucial information.
"I can promise not to exploit the Basilisk's weakness, but you must provide me with some key information," Allen Finis wrote these words in the diary.
"What information?" Yodel replied very quickly.
"You awakened the Basilisk not long ago; let me see that memory of yours," Allen Finis continued writing.
Yodel seemed somewhat hesitant; after quite a while, text finally appeared on the diary page: "Very well! Come to the Mind Chamber in a moment to see it..."
Allen Finis observed his surroundings and realized he had arrived near Moaning Myrtle's bathroom; fortunately, no one was around, so he once again familiarly entered this restroom, ignoring the "Under Maintenance" sign hanging on the door...
He quickly walked into the innermost stall, impatiently opened the diary, and was immediately pulled by Yodel into the Mind Chamber.
Yodel showed him a memory...
The protagonist of this memory was Ron, who stood motionless on one side of a long, dimly lit chamber.
Numerous Shi Zhu carved with coiling, entangled giant snakes towered up, supporting a ceiling that dissolved into the darkness high above, casting long, eerie black shadows across the entire room, which was filled with a mysterious, greenish haze.
Allen Finis couldn't help but feel tense as well; he listened to this chilling silence...
Was the Basilisk lurking in some dark corner behind one of the Shi Zhu?
Ron began to move, advancing slowly between the Shi Zhu around which giant snakes were coiled.
With every step he took, hollow, loud echoes resonated between the ghostly walls...
When he reached a point parallel to the last pair of Shi Zhu, a statue as tall as the chamber itself suddenly appeared before him, pressed tight against the dark wall at the rear.
Allen Finis had to crane his neck high to see the enormous face above: it was an aged, monkey-like face with a sparse long beard that trailed almost down to the hem of the stone-carved wizard's robes, while two large, grayish feet stood upon the chamber's smooth floor.
Ron opened his mouth and emitted a hissing sound—
The massive stone-carved face of Slytherin moved. Harry Potter watched in extreme terror as its mouth opened, widening further and further until it formed a huge black hole.
Something was moving inside the statue's mouth. Something was slithering upward from the depths of the statue with a rustling sound...
A massive creature crashed heavily onto the stone floor; it unfurled its coiled body from Slytherin's mouth, its lantern-sized yellow eyes shining with an awe-inspiring light, its emerald-green scales thick and smooth...
It was at least sixty feet long...
It was extremely hungry and dangerous...
