Chapter 220: Countermeasures
Allen underestimated the difficulty of keeping a leaf in his mouth, for it was not a matter of one or two hours, one or two days, but a full month...
During this month, he still had to live normally, with too many accidents capable of ruining that single leaf.
On the very first day, he accidentally swallowed the leaf while drinking soup.
He had to go ask Professor McGonagall for more leaves, because he felt this was only the beginning.
In Professor McGonagall's office, he also encountered other members of the Transfiguration Club; they too had come to request new leaves.
Their reasons were bizarre: some had accidentally chewed the leaf to pieces while chewing; others had blown the leaf out while laughing; some woke up to find only leaf fragments stuck between their teeth...
In short, this seemingly simple matter was actually extremely tricky.
Allen began new attempts, only to fail several times in a row; mainly, unconscious movements during sleep damaged the leaf in his mouth.
Later, Allen went to extremes, having Harry cast a Petrification Spell on him every night before sleep; under the spell's effect, he would not move around while sleeping. Although waking up each day left him with a sore back and stiff muscles, this indeed prevented him from damaging the leaf in his mouth during sleep.
Additionally, Yodeler taught him a Sticking-to-the-Palate Spell, which allowed him to stick the leaf to his upper palate, making it much harder for his teeth to damage the leaf in his mouth.
He even had a special utensil custom-made for himself; this utensil was essentially a long-handled funnel, with a curved long handle. Every time he ate, he inserted one end of the funnel into his throat, then let Hermione pour crushed liquid food into the funnel.
This way, he only needed to swallow; the food would not touch the leaf on his upper palate, greatly reducing the possibility of food damaging the leaf in his mouth.
The downside was that eating this way was extremely painful; the mashed food looked quite disgusting, like Indian food, and the taste was not very good either. Every time after eating, Allen wanted to say, "Clean and hygienic, brothers!"
But Allen only said this in his mind, because to protect the leaf in his mouth, he began practicing the Silent Meditation, speaking very little. Most communication with others was through notes. After doing this for several days, not speaking nearly drove him mad; fortunately, he still had the Mind Chamber, where he could go chat with Yodeler when he couldn't take it anymore, satisfying his urge to talk, thus ensuring his sanity remained intact.
In short, when it came to being ruthless to himself, Allen always knew how to go all out.
During this period, Allen did not neglect other matters either; he obtained ancient runic parameters for organs or body parts of several magical creatures, but his frequent talent-based manifest magic producing organs or body parts of magical creatures drew Professor McGonagall's attention.
"Have you felt any abnormalities recently?" Professor McGonagall said, staring intently at Allen.
Allen had come to Professor McGonagall's office as usual today to cooperate with sampling, but was stopped by Professor McGonagall.
Allen looked at Professor McGonagall in confusion, not understanding what she meant.
Professor McGonagall took out a notebook and said, "I have recorded your random transformations every day for the past two years and more. Previously, you would randomly transform one organ or body part of a magical creature per month. You have not applied for magical materials recently, yet in the past half month you have already transformed three organs or body parts of magical creatures. Have you felt no abnormalities?"
Allen did not know how to answer Professor McGonagall at that moment; he could only shake his head. To protect the leaf in his mouth, he spoke briefly with a very strange pronunciation: "No, I don't know what's going on either."
A trace of worry appeared in Professor McGonagall's eyes. "It seems your talent-based manifest magic is beginning to mutate. I don't know whether this is a good thing or a bad thing."
Allen did not expect Professor McGonagall to think this way, but this meant he did not need to explain.
"How long has the leaf in your mouth been there?"
"More than a week..." Allen answered with some difficulty.
"It seems you have already mastered a method suitable for yourself." A trace of gratification appeared in Professor McGonagall's eyes; this student of hers had never disappointed her.
"Yes!" Allen slowly nodded his head.
Professor McGonagall thought for a moment, as if making a decision. "Next week."
Allen was stunned by Professor McGonagall's words; he looked at her in confusion.
"Your talent-based manifest magic has begun to show unusual activity; some of our plans must also be moved up." Professor McGonagall said firmly.
Allen did not expect that his recent behavior of obtaining magical parameters for organs or body parts of magical creatures would lead Professor McGonagall to such a misjudgment, but he was glad for it and quickly nodded his head.
"Take the leaf out of your mouth too!" Professor McGonagall said softly. "This week, you must adjust your body."
Allen quickly spat out the leaf from his mouth. "Okay!"
The next day was the weekend, and the new season's Quidditch matches had begun. Although the weather was not good today, with a heavy rainstorm, Quidditch matches would not be canceled for such a minor thing as thunderstorms.
Today's match was Hufflepuff versus Gryffindor.
The storm did not affect the spectators' enthusiasm for watching the Quidditch match live at all; mainly, this level of storm caused no impact on wizards who possessed magical power.
Allen, Hermione, and Ron also went together to the Quidditch stadium to cheer for Harry.
Hermione and Ron's relationship was now somewhat tense; it was all because Crookshanks kept trying to attack the rat Scabbers, which made Ron extremely angry. They had already quarreled several times over this, and in the past few days they had stopped speaking to each other entirely.
Allen himself was very busy; he did not know how to persuade them either, and could only hope that watching this match would ease their relationship somewhat.
The match began quickly; the Quidditch players flying in the sky were soon soaked through. The storm caused huge difficulties for the players.
Their flying movements were much slower than usual; their actions became distorted, and coordination often went wrong, but everyone was striving hard for victory.
Gryffindor quickly took a 50-point lead, but to secure the victory, Harry still needed to catch the Golden Snitch.
Harry, hovering in the air, finally spotted the Golden Snitch through the heavy rain curtain. The Hufflepuff Seeker, Cedric Diggory, spotted the Golden Snitch at the same time. They both dove toward the Golden Snitch...
And at that moment, a group of figures wearing tattered cloaks suddenly appeared above the Quidditch stadium...
A silence born of fear spread across the stands, and then people saw Harry slide off his broom...
