Chapter 242

~5 min read 899 words

But Allen cannot stop at this level, because he learned the Patronus Charm not to repel Dementors, but to create magical intelligence.

He has many ways now to deal with Dementors, but this is the only lead he has toward creating magical intelligence.

A Patronus in mist form shows no sign of intelligence whatsoever, so he must summon a corporeal Patronus.

To see whether developing magical intelligence through the Patronus Charm is even possible.

Because as he collects more and more parameters from various magical creatures and Pokémon body parts, his need for magical intelligence grows ever more urgent.

If a metamorphed beast with parts from multiple magical creatures is considered a high-end hardware computer, then magical intelligence is its software—only equally excellent software can fully unlock the hardware’s potential.

So at this stage, Allen must solve the problem of controlling the metamorphed beasts; if he fails, stacking more hardware is pointless.

For example, previously, when Allen commanded the metamorphed beast to attack a target, it would simply charge forward, because at that stage it had only physical attacks; but now, with multiple magical creature parts, it must choose the most effective and appropriate attack method upon receiving the same command.

Moreover, a metamorphed beast with multiple magical creature parts is bound to be expensive, since transforming consumes many rare magical materials, so it can no longer be treated as a disposable item—it must be able to dodge attacks on its own, and to dodge effectively, it needs awareness of the entire battle situation, which requires some magical intelligence.

Without magical intelligence, controlling metamorphed beasts becomes completely Pokémon-like.

For instance, during combat, you have to shout, “Pikachu, use Thunderbolt!” before the metamorphed beast acts.

At first glance, that doesn’t seem so bad—Professor Zhi fights exactly like that!

But this is the Harry Potter magical world, and Professor Zhi can fight that way because his opponents fight the same way.

But Allen’s enemies are different—many adult wizards master silent casting, and their spell speed is astonishing; according to Allen’s observation, by the time he shouts, “Pikachu, use Thunderbolt!”, an adult wizard could already have cast three spells at him.

Allen can equip his metamorphed beasts with Dragon Scales, but what if he’s not facing just one wizard? What if he’s facing ten? How long could Dragon Scales withstand a barrage of spells?

With magical intelligence, he no longer needs to issue tactical commands to his metamorphed beasts—only strategic guidance matters.

And with magical intelligence, Allen can control many metamorphed beasts simultaneously; theoretically, he can only overwhelm others, never be overwhelmed himself.

That is why Allen is so obsessed with magical intelligence.

“Summoning a full corporeal Patronus is extremely difficult; many wizards never achieve it in their lifetimes, so don’t rush,” Professor Lupin seemed to sense Allen’s impatience.

He then warned Allen and Harry: “I’ve said before—the Patronus Charm itself isn’t complicated; the key is the emotion you channel into it. You’ve already activated your Patronuses; now you must find and practice summoning your most positive memories. That can’t be forced.”

After a pause, he added: “Even if you later summon a corporeal Patronus, it doesn’t mean you’ve truly mastered the spell—during battle, there’s no time to cultivate emotion, especially when facing Dementors, where you won’t have time to slowly recall happy memories.”

And when facing Dementors, finding joy isn’t easy.”

Allen and Harry exchanged a glance; they both knew Professor Lupin was right.

In the days that followed, Hogwarts seemed to grow calm again.

Dementors were kept outside the school by Professor Dumbledore and had not entered since, even after several Quidditch matches were held.

After Sirius Black’s previous attack, Allen had encountered Dementors in his Animagus form and discovered that, in that form, he could resist their ability to drain happiness, and they struggled to sense his presence—they seemed unable to see him at all.

So Allen recently resumed hunting eight-legged spiders in the Forbidden Forest; the Basilisk had been overworked to the point of exhaustion, and he urgently needed its corpse to soothe the Basilisk.

Hunting eight-legged spiders also rescued his nearly bankrupt finances.

Meanwhile, Sirius Black had not appeared again in the past month, as if he had abandoned his pursuit of Harry.

As for the Patronus Charm, both Harry and Allen had made some progress during this time, though neither had yet summoned a corporeal Patronus.

Harry’s Patronus had gradually taken on a discernible shape.

According to Professor Lupin, this was a sign the Patronus Charm was nearly successful.

Unlike Harry’s increasingly clear Patronus, Allen’s remained a shapeless mist.

Had he not known that Patronuses always took animal forms, he might have suspected his was just a cloud or a cotton candy.

Allen tried many methods to make himself happy, but none yielded much result.

Watching Harry make steady progress while he himself seemed stuck, Allen grew increasingly restless.

In his most recent practice, Harry’s Patronus had clearly taken shape—a large, horned, four-legged hoofed animal.

“I think your Patronus is a stag.”

Professor Lupin looked at Harry’s half-formed Patronus with a proud, almost emotional smile: “Do you know, Potter? Your father’s Patronus was also a stag.”

Lupin’s words filled Harry with intense excitement—a strange joy surged through his chest, and he even felt that, under these circumstances, he could summon a full Patronus.
