Chapter 877: Keep One Alive for Questioning
When crops in a field grow well, no one would immediately suspect their own vegetable construct has gained sentience, so that human merely glanced over, left puzzled, and planned to return in a few days.
Unfortunately, there was no chance; his reaction made Seeing Ange alert, so he immediately began a disguise operation, such as shrinking roots, pruning branches, and patting flowers, suppressing some of the crop's prominent features.
Suppressing certain traits of crops is very common; the most common is dwarfing, turning tall fruit trees into low-lying plants to reduce picking difficulty and nutrient consumption by leaves, after all, when planting fruit trees, one only needs their fruit, not for them to grow tall and sturdy.
When the human returned the next day, the crops looked no different from other plots, even more withered.
"I told you too much fertilizer was applied, look, the roots are burned," the human muttered, kicked Seeing Ange, and said, "Pay attention, or I'll dismantle you."
Seeing Ange fell down with the momentum, just like an ordinary construct; only after that human left did he take a deep look at the other party.
Seeing Ange did not follow the King's advice to find a new skeleton; don't think Seeing Ange usually doesn't cause trouble, but don't forget he has posed as a charlatan, as an ascetic, and as a human; at Anthony's place, he learned far too many disguise abilities.
For the following period, Seeing Ange studied this shrub, researching its habits, planting methods, and stealing its fruit.
"Withered and shriveled, but the yield hasn't decreased, not bad, not bad," the human said, looking at the red crystals in the harvesting basket, nodded in satisfaction, and kicked Seeing Ange again while he was at it.
"?" Seeing Ange's forehead was full of question marks, but he still lay down with the momentum; even if the yield hasn't decreased, why kick?
Not far away, the sound of a wrench rang out: "Fraso, what are you doing! You're kicking my construct again, no wonder it breaks all the time; do you think I'm too idle? Why are your feet so cheap? Do you want me to hit you with a wrench?"
Caught red-handed, Fraso quickly denied it: "It applied fertilizer wrongly and burned the roots; I'm teaching it a lesson."
Actually, he was just foot-cheeky; two people guarding such a large farm, with all the main work done by constructs, repairs done by the wrench, he just watched, bored, kicking and hitting; anyway, constructs didn't need him to repair them, if they were kicked broken, higher-level ones might be replaced from above, how great.
The wrench glanced at the crops, indeed a bit withered, but he still said dissatisfied: "If you applied the wrong fertilizer, just tell it; why kick it? It's just a construct, without wisdom; would it fear you just because you kicked it? If you kick it broken, I still have to repair it; next time I see it, I won't repair it; you repair it yourself."
"If it can't be repaired, just replace it; all broken and ragged," Fraso muttered and walked away.
The wrench glared at Fraso angrily, picked up Seeing Ange, returned to the warehouse to maintain him, then hung him on the rack to recharge his soul, cursing aloud:
"If it can't be repaired, just replace it? Later, the masters will be replaced too; the Guild suffered a defeat; who knows if they'll even have the leisure to manage us; if they abandon us, with no supplies, once we finish the warehouse's stored grain, we'll starve to death, you fool."
The Guild? Defeat? Supplies?
Seeing Ange remembered those boxes filled with grain in the warehouse.
At six o'clock in the evening, the wrench ran off impatiently, leaving Seeing Ange in the warehouse again.
Seeing Ange got down from the rack, fished around in the joint seams, and pulled out four red crystals.
Chaos Stones are harvested immediately; their growth speeds differ, with crystals maturing every day, so they must be picked in time, otherwise the chaos power within the crystals will be absorbed back by the crops.
The maturation speed is roughly equal, about six or seven crystals per day, very even; fourteen were harvested in two days, consistent with previous yields, so Fraso felt it was good; the yield hadn't decreased.
However, he didn't know who was responsible for planting? That was the God of Planting; how could it decrease? It would only increase; these four were the extra ones.
To avoid appearing special, Seeing Ange hid the extra Chaos Stones, but he had nowhere on his body to hide them, so he stuffed them into the joint seams; but the joint seams couldn't hold many, so he needed a way to dispose of them, otherwise he wouldn't know where to hide the extra portion tomorrow.
How to dispose of them? Thinking for a moment, Seeing Ange took one Chaos Stone into his right palm and gazed at it forcefully.
When his gaze crossed space and landed on the Chaos Stone, the stone glowed, then suddenly expanded into a 'Nai Hong Juqiu', instantly swallowing Seeing Ange's palm.
Seeing Ange's eyes narrowed; the Nai Hong Juqiu immediately froze, expanding only to the size of a watermelon; if not frozen, if all released, the Nai Hong Juqiu might have swallowed him too.
Just like that, gazing, a certain power conduit was established between the Nai Hong Juqiu and Seeing Ange's eyes; the Nai Hong Juqiu turned into streams of red energy beams, pouring into Seeing Ange's eyes.
It took a full two minutes for Seeing Ange to completely absorb the Nai Hong Juqiu; his eyes flashed once, then returned to normal.
Coming to his senses, Seeing Ange discovered his entire right palm and half of his forearm had vanished; the cut was perfectly flat, as if sliced by a spatial rift.
The power was immense.
And a tiny thread of chaos power had entered his soul; this discovery made Seeing Ange's spirit tremble; could he absorb the chaos power from Chaos Stones?
Seeing Ange's will projected over; he lacked no techniques for wielding power, only power itself; if he could absorb chaos power this way, wouldn't he be able to regain the strength of the Eternal Divine Light?
Finally, there was a way to restore strength; previously, Seeing Ange didn't care much about this, but now without power, he couldn't save the King, forcing him to start thinking of solutions.
Digging through the pile of constructs in the corner, Seeing Ange found an intact hand to replace the missing one, then continued absorbing the remaining three Chaos Stones; first, he threw one Chaos Stone before him, then gazed.
After absorbing two, only one remained; Seeing Ange suddenly heard a commotion outside; an airship was landing in front of the warehouse.
Seeing Ange quickly hung himself back on the rack; not long after, the warehouse door was pulled open, and a squad of unfamiliar swordsmen rushed in, quickly moving boxes sealed with prohibitions; these boxes were all filled with harvested Chaos Stones.
The wrench and Fraso were arguing with a swordsman who was clearly the leader; the wrench seemed to be asking: "What do we do? What about supplies? How do we handle this? When will you return?"
Fraso, even more panicked, shouted: "Is the Guild abandoning this place? Are we leaving too? Take us, take us with you."
The leader swordsman spoke righteously: "No, how could that be? The Guild is invincible; the advantage is ours; it's just a temporary change in the situation requiring a strategic withdrawal; you don't need to worry; hold the rear; we'll be back soon. Supplies are temporarily unavailable; you'll have to find a way to cope."
Fraso's face turned pale; he wanted to say something more, but that leader swordsman impatiently gripped his sword hilt, and red light began to emanate from his body.
Seeing Ange remained motionless, playing dead on the rack.
If the chaos power on the wrench and Fraso was ten, then the chaos power on this leader swordsman was at least a hundred; and this was just gathered power, before even striking; the gap between them felt like the difference between a novice swordsman and an elite swordsman.
The wrench and Fraso fell silent as if frozen by frost, daring not to speak another word, only watching helplessly as this squad of swordsmen emptied the warehouse, then rushed into the farm to pick even the unripe Chaos Stones.
The swordsman leader left a sentence: "Hold the rear; we'll be back soon," then hurriedly boarded the airship and left the farm.
Even a fool could see the dire situation; the wrench and Fraso exchanged a glance and ran out.
Leaving Fraso there, cursing bitterly: "If you're running away, just run; what strategic withdrawal? Damn it, would it kill you to take us? They even took the supplies; do they want to starve us? They never treat us as humans, yet still expect us to hold the rear; bah."
The more Fraso spoke, the more agitated he became; he glared viciously at Seeing Ange on the rack, rushed over, and intended to kick him to vent his anger.
Seeing Ange raised his hand and threw the last Chaos Stone at him.
Fraso paused for a moment, instinctively caught the Chaos Stone, held it up to his eyes, and wondered: Why would this construct throw him a Chaos Stone out of nowhere? No, why would this construct even have a Chaos Stone?
Before he could figure it out, the Chaos Stone in his hand suddenly glowed, then expanded, and he knew nothing more.
Fraso's headless corpse fell to the ground; Seeing Ange got down from the rack, ran to the corner pile of constructs, lay down, and conveniently pulled a half-construct from beside him to cover himself.
Noisy sounds rose again in the air; it seemed mages were flying over; Seeing Ange could sense fluctuations in mana; not long after, the wrench's screams rang out outside.
Quickly, three mages burst in; one mage shook his mana, causing mana fluctuations to echo several times within the warehouse, like a soul scan, clearing everything up.
But nothing was found; the mages glanced at Fraso's corpse on the ground, then turned and left.
A voice rang out outside: "Report: The Chaos Trees have all been poisoned; unless the God of Planting descends, these crops are doomed; this Chaos Farm is ruined."
Does this world have a God of Planting? Hearing the tone of that voice, there was no respect at all; obviously not; he was just using the God of Planting to express 'the crops are doomed'.
"What a pity; we were a step late; pursue; we can't let them destroy all the valuable things."
After a burst of noise, silence fell outside.
Seeing Ange waited a while longer, then crept to his feet, slipped outside quietly to circle the area, and discovered Wrench's corpse.
Wrench had been killed by a single spell; a hole the size of a finger pierced his chest.
He circled the farm once more and indeed found that all the shrubs had been doused with poison; digging them up revealed the roots underground had already begun to turn black.
Seeing Ange hurried to block the drainage outlet, opened the irrigation channel to flood the farm, then ran back to the warehouse, dismantled the brick wall, deactivated the formation, and released the Monarch.
"What chaos. What faction are those mages from? We know far too little about this world. Perfect—let's keep a live one to interrogate." Once the Monarch understood what had happened, he couldn't help but clutch his head in pain.
