Chapter 99: True · Holy Light Radiance!

~8 min read 1,451 words

The little zombie digging beasts went all out, digging a ring of pits, and everyone ducked into them on the spot, watching Seeing Ange's magic turret pick off the angels charging out of the pillar of light one by one.

As the firing went on, the wind picked up, and everyone had to pull their heads back in, then peek out again every few minutes for a look.

Only Seeing Ange, with the little sapling on his head, stood in the pit with his upper body exposed; when the Wind of Rest blew past, it simply parted around him.

The little sapling waved its true leaves, sending out an enthusiastic message: harder—heave—harder—heave—.

Once the Wind of Rest blew in, Seeing Ange didn't need to lift a finger; the angels charging out of the pillar of light took a few gusts of the Wind of Rest and immediately raised Holy Light to shield themselves, stopping in place to withstand the wind.

The stronger the wind blew, the brighter the Holy Light on their bodies became, until they simply drove their longswords point-down into the ground, dropping to one knee to tough it out.

The ones behind were the same—one came out and stopped there, another came out and stopped there, like magic lightbulbs being lit up.

Lord Nai Ge and Anthony were the most eager peepers, poking their heads out every few minutes; around the pillar of light, a few more glowing orbs appeared each time they looked, and after an hour, the area around the pillar was already densely packed with glowing orbs.

From this point on, some of the glowing orbs began to go out one after another; Anthony, with prior experience, didn't think they had dug pits to hide in.

"Now I know how that idiot I sent last time died—toughing it out till the very end. That one was a 1.7-meter third-tier angel, so it lasted a bit longer. These 1.9-meter first-tier Heavenly ones are too weak; they barely lasted an hour." Anthony shook his head and said painfully.

"You mean the time I ran into two Black Warriors? Yeah, I saw it. That day we rode past on horseback and saw a skeleton kneeling there with two Black Warriors standing behind it. We thought the Black Warriors had beaten the angel to death, but turns out that wasn't the case."

"You call that riding? That's abuse." Anthony said, curling his lip. He had never seen a 'horse' that could carry four riders, including a dragon.

"By the way, why is it that the taller the angel, the lower its tier?" Lord Nai Ge asked.

"Density, probably. Newly born angels are all first-tier, almost exactly the same height. As their bodies shrink, the power they can contain grows greater, and their tier rises."

After a pause, Anthony added: "The one beside Lord Seeing Ange was very likely fifth-tier or above with four wings in life."

"Ah? Really? But the Holy Remains we dug up before in the Purple Remains Plane was only about this tall—the same plane where we dug up Locke's hand bones. Didn't you say a six-winged archangel perished together with Locke? It's very likely the one we dug up, but it was only about this tall." Lord Nai Ge had just finished speaking when he noticed Anthony's expression change.

"I only gave you one coordinate—how did you get there? Why didn't you tell me when you dug up the Holy Remains?" Anthony shot him a sidelong glance.

"Heh heh, well, haha, um, the weather—really nice today." Amid the howling of the Wind of Rest, Lord Nai Ge said with a laugh.

Anthony snorted, too lazy to argue with him. Mutual wariness—who wasn't the same? After all, they hadn't seen each other in over a thousand years, and their interests differed. Had Anthony not held anything back? Weren't those two Black Warriors of his the ones who hadn't followed along?

If Lord Nai Ge showed not the slightest hint of wariness toward him, Anthony would only think him a fool.

"Forget it, let's not talk about that. Do you think the Gods of Light are still alive?" Anthony asked.

When the pillar of light first fell, Anthony had thought the Gods of Light might still be alive, but looking at it now, if even one of the Gods of Light could still draw breath, they wouldn't have let these holy spirit angels be this stupid.

"Definitely gone. These angels now are all running on pure instinct—not even as smart as Seeing Ange's one."

Without the example of the Sovereigns, Lord Nai Ge would have found it hard to accept the hypothesis that the Gods of Light had vanished. But the Sovereigns had vanished, so what was so unthinkable about the Gods of Light vanishing? Compared to the Sovereigns, the Gods of Light didn't amount to a fart.

Just then, Seeing Ange, who had been leaning halfway out, suddenly erupted with a continuous stream of magical fluctuations; fireballs condensed one after another and shot out in succession, tearing a line of fire through the howling Wind of Rest.

After the Wind of Rest intensified, Seeing Ange had stopped; the angels were all busy resisting the Wind of Rest and couldn't move. Now Seeing Ange was moving again—had something changed?

Everyone hurriedly poked their heads out for a look; from the outside, it was as if a bunch of groundhogs had popped up from the earth.

They saw a cluster of glowing orbs around the pillar of light, and the largest one was charging forward against the howling Wind of Rest—Seeing Ange's fireballs were smashing into it.

Within the Wind of Rest, perception was limited, power was weakened, and one had to endure the Wind of Rest's erosion at every moment.

Holy Light dealt bonus damage to undead creatures, and the Wind of Rest likewise dealt bonus damage to holy spirits. On top of that, Seeing Ange's barrage of fireballs hammered into it; the Holy Light on its body was rapidly weakened, and it soon came to a halt, then had the Holy Light forcibly beaten out of it and was blown apart into fireballs.

But the Heavenly Stairway was still sending down holy spirits—another, even larger glowing figure landed and charged over, bearing the Wind of Rest.

A barrage of fireballs slammed into it, yet this glowing figure could still charge forward through the fireballs—clearly far stronger than the holy spirits before it.

A spark of fire flashed in Seeing Ange's eyes; the fist-sized fireballs suddenly contracted, shrinking to ping-pong-ball size, but denser and brighter. The casting rate dropped, yet the speed of the fireballs surged dramatically.

Fireballs like these, upon hitting their target, would not only scatter but also explode. Amid a string of "bang bang bang bang…" explosions, the charging glowing figure was hammered back step after step.

"There we go—fireball upgraded." As if he had expected it all along, Lord Nai Ge said.

"A fourth-tier Explosive Fireball? That can't be right—the power's a bit weak, and the magical reaction doesn't feel quite right either." Anthony said, surprised.

Lord Nai Ge curled his lip: "Because that's not a fourth-tier Explosive Fireball—it's a second-tier Explosive Fireball."

"What kind of joke is that? When has there ever been a second-tier Explosive Fireball? Isn't Explosive Fireball a fourth-tier spell?" Anthony questioned.

"Wait till you've fired off thousands of first-tier spells in one go, and you'll learn how." Lord Nai Ge spread his hands and said helplessly.

Seeing Ange's Scorched Earth technique was actually the weakest, so his fire-type Fireball spell was also the weakest. The spells he had the highest mastery of were Rain, Purify, and Beautify.

With these three spells, he could use first-tier mana, buffer-cast through the Hand of Locke to deliver second-tier spells, yet achieve fourth-tier effects.

As his mastery of Fireball rose, it achieved the same effect.

Anthony opened his mouth to argue, but found he had no ground to stand on—after all, Seeing Ange's example was right in front of him, and he truly had never seen a mage fire off thousands of first-tier spells in a row.

The glowing figure was hammered by Seeing Ange into a burning man and collapsed in a heap. Yet an even larger glowing figure had already landed, and the moment it burst out of the pillar of light, it flung its wings wide with a whoosh—Seeing Ange felt as if the whole world had lit up.

A pillar of light shot straight at Seeing Ange—True · Holy Light Radiance!
