Chapter 307 - 251 Lying Low
Faming furrowed his brows upon hearing the words, Ding Xiao might not have said much, but the information revealed was far from scant.
Although he had been prepared, he had not expected the other party to have such a formidable background, one that even a senior expert like Ding Xiao was somewhat wary of.
"Thank you, Senior, for the information. The little monk takes his leave!" Faming said very respectfully as he bowed and then slowly withdrew from the Cangwu VBuilding.
"This little monk truly has a compassionate heart," Lady Wu softly said, watching Faming’s retreating figure.
"Do you really plan to sit back and do nothing?"
A pair of beautiful eyes stared at the gentle face of her husband. Knowing him as she did, she was certain he would not stand idly by. If the little monk indeed faced a dire situation, there was a nine out of ten chance he would intervene.
Yet she did not harbor much resentment in her heart, for if her husband weren’t of such a character, she might well have become another soul under his sword.
"He is a person of the Buddhist Sect. The fact that the little Flood Dragon has a significant background is true, but if they dare to kill this little monk, they won’t be able to bear the wrath of the Buddhist Sect. This little monk bears the mark of the Buddhist Sect and must be one of its most esteemed disciples, possibly even the Buddhist Disciple mentioned in rumors. If those fools are truly blind enough to make a move, they won’t be able to handle the consequences."
Thinking this, a sly, schadenfreude-filled voice emerged on Ding Xiao’s face: "Just wait, the good show will start soon."
Lady Wu smiled and embraced her husband, full of affection, and lifted her head to see that dawn was already breaking.
Roosters crowed, announcing the new day, as many people began to open their bleary eyes to start a new day’s life.
The gossip-mongers had already gathered, talking incessantly about the tale from the previous night. Some said that Cangwu VBuilding was haunted last night, others claimed there was no fierce ghost but a terrible Monster instead.
Some adamantly swore they had seen a venerable monk subdue the evil spirit, and in no time, a multitude of versions of the story swirled about, adding to the rumors amongst the townsfolk.
However, the Cangwu VBuilding, mysterious and supposedly occupied by fierce ghosts and Monsters, opened its doors slowly as usual.
As the door opened, Lady Wu saw countless curious eyes standing outside.
"What’s with this crowd today? Why are you blocking my door so early in the morning?" Lady Wu said with a smile.
"Lady Wu, are you all right?" one person asked worriedly.
"Of course we’re fine. What could be wrong?"
"The whole city is talking about your house being haunted by a fierce ghost, saved only by the arrival of a high monk."
The crowd jabbered about the news they had heard, and Lady Wu roughly counted at least seven or eight different versions.
She then said with a laugh: "Don’t believe the rumors, my friends. There are no fierce ghosts in my home. It seems that last night, a few little thieves broke in and were somehow frightened off. When I went to look, there was only a little broom on the floor."
"As for the high monk you mentioned, I did see one, seems his name was Faming."
Her words dispelled the doubts in everyone’s minds, leaving many people who had come with curiosity feeling disappointed. It turned out there were no fierce ghosts or Monsters at all, the thieves were simply scared by a broomstick.
"That Wang Mazu still dares to call himself the bully of the town, yet he was frightened by a broomstick!" someone laughed heartily.
The comment immediately provoked laughter from those around.
Soon, someone shouted: "That little rascal never does anything good, daring to disturb Doctor Ding, when I get back I’ll tell his father to break his legs."
Meanwhile, in a large house in the town, Boss Li was raging like thunder, facing Wang Mazu whose face was ashen.
"Useless! You boast about your prowess in front of me every day, yet you were scared silly by a broomstick," Boss Li spat, his face a livid blue and his veins bulging prominently as he berated Wang Mazu.
The well-thought-out plan he had prepared was ruined by the fool before him; now that the couple was aware, succeeding again would be difficult.
"Boss Li, you have to believe me, there really was a huge python, I saw it with my own eyes. Its eyes were as big as bronze bells!" Wang Mazu still tried to explain to Boss Li.
But how could Boss Li listen to such words at this moment?
"Get out, out!" he bellowed furiously like an enraged lion, even throwing his most beloved tea set to the ground.
"A hindrance in success and a contribution to failure!"
Wang Mazu was scolded terribly, dejectedly leaving the Li Mansion, whereupon a group of his underlings quickly surrounded him.
"Big brother, what did Boss Li say? How is he settling the money?"
Wang Mazu immediately replied irritably, "Money, what money? He gave me a good scolding and kicked me out. There wasn’t a dime."
"Why not? We risked our lives last night. That python was so terrifying, we all saw it. If it had come at us, we would have all been goners," the gangsters said indignantly.
"What python? They insist it was just a broomstick and even mocked us for being cowardly and ruining their plan."
Wang Mazu spat fiercely on the ground at this point and said bitterly, "I see now, none of these wealthy people are good. In their eyes, we’re not even worth as much as dogs."
"Damn it, big brother, let’s rush in and give that bastard a pounding, to breathe out a sigh of resentment!"
"Don’t be impulsive. Didn’t you see how many guards there are? If we rush in, do you think we’d make it out in one piece? Let’s go, it’s just our bad luck this time. Just wait for me to find an opportunity; I’ll make sure that bastard can’t walk away from what he’s done," Wang Mazu said spitefully, casting one last venomous look at the Li Mansion before leading his brothers away, having issued this ominous threat.
