Chapter 5: Implants
"I'm back!"
A loud voice drifted into the bedroom.
Li Fei knew that this was Li Tianyu returning.
The other party could be considered his predecessor's childhood sweetheart, a sister with no blood relation.
Li Fei put down his book, turned around, and looked toward the bedroom door.
He knew Li Tianyu would enter his room immediately.
Sure enough, a moment later, a short-haired woman wearing a white top and a long black skirt pushed the door open and walked straight in:
"What are you doing?"
Li Fei looked helpless:
"Sister, I've told you many times, knock on the door before coming in."
Li Tianyu raised an eyebrow: "Is there anything you have that you can't let me, your sister, know about?"
Her face inherited the melon-seed shape of her mother, Zhang Yuqing, and she also had fair skin; her long, narrow eyes and willow-leaf-like eyebrows were inherited from her father, Li Lei, giving her a bit more heroic spirit.
A pair of long legs made her taller than many boys her age, and standing there, she could be described as valiant and spirited.
Li Fei felt that if this sister were placed in his previous life, she could definitely become an international supermodel.
"What if I were changing clothes inside?"
Li Fei said.
Li Tianyu gave a disdainful smile, "Where on your body haven't I seen? What's there to be embarrassed about?"
Li Fei felt helpless.
His father and Li Lei were comrades-in-arms, and both happened to have the surname Li; to outsiders, the two were like blood brothers.
Li Fei's father died on the battlefield, and Li Lei adopted him; he originally wanted Li Fei to call him godfather directly, but Li Fei's predecessor simply refused.
Li Fei understood the predecessor's thoughts: if he called him godfather, Li Tianyu would truly become his sister, and the predecessor did not want to just be Li Tianyu's brother.
But in Li Fei's view, Li Tianyu clearly just treated the predecessor as her younger brother, with absolutely no other thoughts.
"This is for the best, it saves us from awkwardness later."
Li Fei thought to himself.
He was now single-mindedly focused on becoming a martial artist and wanting to master his own destiny; he had no thoughts of romance at all.
"Speaking of which, you've been giving me a strange feeling lately. You never used to be willing to call me sister, so why the sudden change?"
Li Tianyu sat familiarly on the edge of Li Fei's bed, facing him.
Li Fei's heart skipped a beat.
Although he had acquired the predecessor's memories after transmigrating, some of his words and actions were bound to differ from the predecessor's.
Fortunately, he was only seventeen now, right in the middle of puberty, so a slight change in personality wouldn't be considered unacceptable.
He smiled: "Are you not happy that I'm calling you sister?"
"I am your sister, after all."
Li Tianyu habitually raised her eyebrows, "Come, let me tell you what the tutor told us today."
In the special physical examination two months ago, she received a rating of Grade A-minus.
According to the school teachers, only those with a rating of Grade C or higher were eligible to apply for the Martial Arts Department of a university, and only those with a rating of Grade A or higher had a greater chance of getting in.
Therefore, after that physical exam, the school specifically arranged tutors for all students who received a Grade A rating to teach them some things in advance, so as to increase their chances of getting into university.
The reason Li Tianyu came back late today was that she was attending these extra lessons at school.
"Is the content of your extra lessons allowed to be told to others?"
Li Fei asked curiously.
"You're not 'others'."
Li Tianyu said as a matter of course.
Although she also liked to bully Li Fei, ever since they were young, whenever she had something good, she would always share it with this younger brother.
"Alright, sit up straight, sister is going to tutor you!"
"Please, go ahead."
Li Tianyu cleared her throat and said seriously:
"The human body has limits. No matter how you train, your speed cannot be faster than a bullet, and your body cannot block the bombardment of artillery. So, do you know why the martial artists of our Great Lan Dynasty can defeat the foreign guns and cannons?"
"Why?"
Li Fei looked curious.
This question was also what he most wanted to know.
How could the martial artists of this world defeat thermal weapons?
The martial artists of his previous life only dared to say that 'within seven steps, the fist is fast'; could it be that in this world, beyond seven steps, the fist is both fast and strong?
"Because we have implants."
Li Tianyu didn't keep him in suspense and revealed the answer directly.
"Implants?"
"I don't know the specifics either, but it's something implanted into the human body. With it, a martial artist can break through the limits of the human body and possess more powerful strength."
"This..."
Li Fei had thought there would be things like internal energy or battle qi in this world; he never expected it to be so-called implants.
Is this some kind of cyber martial arts?
"What else did the teacher tell you?"
"The teacher also said that after these implants enter the human body, they cause damage. Some people have good constitutions and strong endurance, so they can slowly adapt. But the vast majority of people's constitutions cannot withstand the implants, and naturally, they cannot become true martial artists."
"I see. So the rating from the last test was actually evaluating our ability to withstand the implants?"
"Yes."
Li Tianyu looked into Li Fei's eyes, "Your rating was Grade B-minus. Although it's not as good as mine, it's already stronger than the vast majority of people, and you still have a chance to become a martial artist."
This was the main reason she came to chat with Li Fei today; she was worried that Li Fei would be discouraged by this matter.
In her impression, this younger brother of hers had an introverted and sensitive personality.
But after hearing what she said, Li Fei couldn't help but show a smile on his face:
"I have the Ten Thousand Blood Bead on me; my constitution is definitely even more powerful than Grade A-plus!"
Seeing the smile on Li Fei's face, Li Tianyu also started to smile:
"The tutor also said that they will give us some medicine later to let our bodies adapt to the side effects of the implants in advance. I'll secretly bring some back for you when the time comes, so you can try it too."
Li Fei was startled when he heard this and quickly said seriously:
"Sister, you don't need to bring medicine back for me. I don't plan on taking the university entrance exam this year."
Li Tianyu frowned: "You're not taking the university exam? Didn't you say you wanted to be a general with me and go to the battlefield together in the future?"
Unlike other girls, her dream since childhood was to become a female general, galloping on the battlefield and leaving her name in history.
Only by becoming a martial artist, and a sufficiently powerful one at that, could she realize this dream, so she chose the Martial Arts Department for her vocational school and was determined to get into university.
Li Fei smiled: "I'm just not taking the university exam this year. I plan to go to the Martial Arts Hall in Xingcheng; they have quotas every year for direct entry into the university's Martial Arts Department."
"Did my dad say something to you?"
Li Tianyu's expression sank, and she stood up abruptly, "I'm going to find him!"
"Sister!"
Li Fei quickly grabbed her, "Our family can only afford to send one person to university. Your aptitude is better than mine, so you should be the one to go. Don't make things difficult for Uncle Li."
"I..."
Li Tianyu hesitated.
Ever since they were young, she had shared everything good with Li Fei.
But this time...
"Sister, the Martial Arts Hall also has quotas for university. I will go to the Martial Arts Hall and get a quota, and by next year, we can meet at university."
Li Fei said in a firm tone.
The light of the setting sun shone in through the bedroom window, reflecting on Li Fei and making him look golden all over.
Li Tianyu looked at this younger brother she had grown up with and felt that he really seemed a bit different now.
"Then it's a deal. We'll see each other at university next year."
"Mm, it's a deal!"
