Chapter 79: The Eerie Food Stall
Lin Feng retracted his Ghost Fire and continued walking toward the front of the street; this time, his target was primarily the wooden buildings with lanterns hanging at their entrances.
There were indeed many things in this Ghost Market that could not be seen elsewhere, and Lin Feng had not walked far before he spotted a peculiar shop.
Because even from a good distance away, he smelled a rich, meaty aroma; this scent was even more eye-catching than the green lanterns lit up in front of the shop.
This meaty aroma was different from the smell produced by stewing or stir-frying with various spices; it was a pure, meaty scent, filled with a quality that made one's appetite soar.
As Lin Feng approached, a crude food stall suddenly appeared before his eyes; several Eight-Immortal Tables were set up in front of the stall, and quite a few people were already seated around them.
Beside the stall were three stoves arranged in a 'pin' shape, each with a pot boiling on it; that enticing meaty aroma was wafting from these pots.
"Gurgle~"
The pot in the middle seemed to be simmering a rich broth; milky-white soup bubbled constantly, and chunks of meat, boiled to a pale color, rose and fell with the liquid.
The other two pots held a stack of bamboo steamers and a pot of white rice, respectively, also emitting a strong fragrance.
"Gurgle~~"
As Lin Feng drew closer, his stomach actually began to growl uncontrollably; a powerful sense of hunger seemed to be urging him to hurry over and eat a few bowls!
Lin Feng had never encountered such a thing before; in the past, no matter how hungry he was, he only felt his stomach empty and slightly painful.
Without a doubt, this shop had major issues; the scent alone could influence a person's mind.
Blinking his eyes, a faint glimmer flashed through Lin Feng's gaze, and he looked once more at the food inside the pots on the stoves.
Yet, to Lin Feng's surprise, no matter how he looked, the meat soup remained meat soup, and the rice remained rice.
It did not turn into stones, bones, or corpses like in the movies or television dramas.
"Customer, how about coming over for a bowl?"
Just then, a greasy-faced man walked out of the food stall; he squeezed a smile onto his oily face and asked Lin Feng this.
"You want to call Old Sun to eat these things?"
Lin Feng became vigilant instantly, feeling that this person seemed to be trying to lure him over.
"It's cold out, have a bowl of piping hot stewed meat to warm your body!"
The man didn't care about that; he directly picked up a ladle, scooped a bowl of meat soup, and gestured toward Lin Feng.
"How much?"
"Three coins for a big bowl, you can get refills after you finish!"
"Pay first or eat first?"
"Eat first, pay later!"
"Heh heh, you said it yourself!"
Hearing this, Lin Feng laughed instantly, and then a Green-Skinned Little Ghost quietly appeared behind him.
"This disciple of mine under Old Sun hasn't had a full meal since following me; today, he can finally eat his fill!"
As Lin Feng's words fell, the meat soup in the bowl had already been eaten clean by the Tanshi Gui.
"Another bowl!"
Lin Feng placed the bowl directly on the table and then shouted loudly without a care.
"Coming!"
Soon, another bowl was eaten clean by the Tanshi Gui in no time at all.
"Another bowl!"
"Coming!"
"..."
Eight bowls, ten bowls, twenty bowls... the Tanshi Gui's distended belly still hadn't burst, but it looked full of satisfaction, as if these meat soups were very pleasing to it.
It was satisfied, but that man was certainly not.
"Another bowl!"
As Lin Feng said this again, the surroundings became unusually quiet.
The diners who had been eating and drinking around the Eight-Immortal Tables all stopped their movements, their gazes all landing on Lin Feng and the Tanshi Gui.
And the man's originally oily face now became abnormally withered, his expression toward Lin Feng filled with wariness and malice.
"Customer, hasn't this kid eaten a bit too much?"
"Hmph! This disciple of mine under Old Sun is just starving; you were the one who said there were refills! Don't tell me you want to go back on your word?"
Hearing him say this, Lin Feng stood up immediately; golden Ghost Fire swirled around him, and the Ruyi Golden Cudgel in his hand slowly grew larger, with the clear posture of someone ready to fight at the slightest disagreement.
Looking at the terrifying power radiating from the golden Ghost Fire and the pitch-black, gaping mouth of the Tanshi Gui, the Tanshi Gui's undisguised, hungry gaze seemed as if it wanted to eat everything present.
"Clang, clang, clatter"
Facing Lin Feng and the Tanshi Gui, the man's expression shifted several times, but in the end, he took a handful of Ghost Coins from the cloth pouch on his chest and threw them toward Lin Feng.
"Running into you is my bad luck! Here are thirty coins, take the money and leave quickly; I'm not doing business with you anymore!"
Looking at these Ghost Coins, Lin Feng's eyes narrowed slightly, and then with a wave of his hand, the Ghost Coins all gathered into his palm.
"Hahaha, eaten and drunk, Old Sun is off!"
Then Lin Feng retracted the Tanshi Gui and turned to walk toward the further reaches of the street.
Walking on the street, the food stall behind Lin Feng had gradually disappeared; only then did Lin Feng let out a sigh of relief.
Just a moment ago, he had felt a hair-raising sensation from inside the food stall; if he had made a move just then, he would likely have had his head chopped off first.
Before leaving the food stall, Lin Feng had caught a glimpse out of the corner of his eye; what emitted that dangerous feeling was nothing else but a bone-chopping knife nailed into a cutting board.
Scattered around that kitchen knife were various severed limbs and fragments of ghosts; clearly, that bone-chopping knife was specifically for butchering ghosts.
"Thirty coins, I suppose it counts as an unexpected gain, but the things in that pot..."
Connecting it to the severed limbs around the bone-chopping knife, what the food stall's ingredients were was naturally self-evident.
Come to think of it, since the other party was running a food stall, they naturally wouldn't keep the ingredients in their original form so obviously.
Once many things are chopped into pieces, basically no one can tell what their origins were.
As Lin Feng continued forward, suddenly someone in the middle of the street came toward him driving a herd of cattle and sheep.
"Baa~ baa~ baa~"
"Moo~ moo~"
"......"
As the cattle and sheep approached, a strong, pungent stench rushed toward him; without even looking, one knew these cattle and sheep were defecating as they walked.
"Crack! Crack!"
Suddenly, a shepherd brandished the whip in his hand to lash at the lambs trying to approach Lin Feng, immediately causing these cattle and sheep to start wailing one after another.
"Baa~ baa~"
"Moo!"
"Hmph, a bunch of beasts, only knowing how to eat, eat, eat; once you've eaten, you just shit!"
"Is it easy for me to raise you all this big!"
As that cursing shepherd drew closer, Lin Feng gradually saw his appearance.
This person wore a leather-lined jacket, was filthy and smelly all over, and had quite a few bits of weeds in his messy hair; he was the spitting image of a shepherd raising sheep for a landlord.
But just at this moment, an old Daoist with white hair and beard appeared behind him, cursing viciously: "I, this old Daoist, have finally caught you! You conscience-less beast!"
As his voice fell, a peach-wood sword suddenly flew out, thrusting rapidly toward that shepherd.
The shepherd who had been driving the cattle and sheep seemed to have eyes in the back of his head; he swung the whip in his hand and struck directly onto the wooden sword.
"Clang~"
The moment these two seemingly ordinary objects collided, they unexpectedly erupted with the sound of metal clashing.
"Eat my offerings, heed my decree, armored soldiers, armored soldiers, by your command you act, come quickly to assist me in defeating the enemy!"
But the next moment, several yellow talismans in the old Daoist's hand ignited out of thin air, and at the same time, an offering table appeared before him, though no one knew when.
As he finished chanting, as if performing magic, three special incense sticks were ignited in his hand.
"Rumble~"
Then, an aura of grim slaughter instantly shrouded the entire street, and within the thick darkness, it was as if an army of thousands was about to charge out.
"Crack! You bull-nosed old Daoist, how dare you ruin my good deed!"
Yet the shepherd seemed not to care about this display at all; he fiercely swung his whip and opened his mouth to berate the old Daoist.
The cattle and sheep he had been driving all turned their heads at this moment and stampeded toward the direction where the old Daoist stood.
