Chapter 115: A Night of Rainstorm
"It's her!"
Sun Cheng stared intently at the light screen, his mind deep in thought.
As a suspicious person by nature, even though Nublar Island was not his own territory, he had not been idle since arriving; he had let Barricade spend last night setting up dozens of surveillance points across the island.
Although the heavens were unkind and a rainstorm had destroyed most of his hard work, the cameras at the villa and the Yanjiu Zhongxin remained functional. While these pinhole cameras were purchased by Sun Cheng in the real world, they were high-priced, premium items, and he had ordered Barricade to use Decepticon capabilities to provide some Enhancement. Though not as effective as the reconnaissance devices he had in the other world, he reckoned they were already on par with the configurations used by spies and agents of various nations.
If the most profound impression Ada Wong had left on him during their first meeting was one of stunning beauty, then as their contact increased, the suspicious Sun Cheng felt more and more that this woman was hiding something.
"I kept wondering why something felt off; I'm afraid her identity, like mine, may not be real..."
Through the surveillance footage projected by Barricade, Sun Cheng saw that Ada Wong had draped a transparent raincoat over herself, and underneath, she had changed into a tight-fitting black leather suit. Her efficient movements revealed a practiced sense of counter-surveillance; there was no doubt she was a corporate spy!
He was curious if Ada Wong was also heading to the Yanjiu Zhongxin when she went out, but the surveillance equipment he had set up along the way had long since been blown away by the Storm, he knew not where. After thinking it over and feeling uneasy, he asked Barricade, "Of the surveillance points set up on the island, how many can still provide feedback data now?"
"Except for the six nearby, only the two at the Yanjiu Zhongxin can still be contacted..."
"As expected..." Sun Cheng sighed, glanced through the gap in the curtains at the howling Storm outside, and shook his head helplessly.
In the face of nature's power, even man-made ships of tens of thousands of tons were in danger of being destroyed, let alone some surveillance equipment.
Just as he was sighing at the power of nature, Sun Cheng suddenly noticed the body of Barricade move inexplicably. Just as he was about to ask, he saw it suddenly turn to look in a distant direction, only turning back more than ten seconds later.
"Is there a situation?" Sun Cheng asked.
"The monitor captured the protective gate outside the villa suddenly opening just now, and even the high-voltage electric fence was cut... I just asked Brawl, and it wasn't him!"
Barricade replied in a cold electronic voice.
"Not good!"
Sun Cheng's face stiffened, and he immediately realized the severity of the problem.
Nublar Island was not safe. International Genetic Technologies had built this place as a dinosaur park, but Hammond, the boss, lacked any sense of proportion and had actually resurrected carnivorous dinosaurs like the Tyrannosaurus Rex, Velociraptors, and Dilophosaurus.
These ancient Hunters were far larger in size than the most famous fierce beasts on Earth today, such as lions, tigers, leopards, and wolves, and their appetites were naturally even more terrifying, so they could only be kept in cages and fed meat on a strict schedule every day.
Hammond had followed a zoo-like approach, attempting to use time to wear down the ferocity of these ancient beasts, but to prevent accidents, he had built tens of kilometers of steel protective barriers on the island, which were also electrified with high voltage.
Now that Sun Cheng heard the nearby protective gate had suddenly been opened and the high-voltage electric fence on the steel protective wall surrounding the villa area had also lost power, his heart sank.
Regardless of whether this accident was man-made or caused by the Storm, it confirmed one thing: this place was no longer safe!
"This place is not safe, let's go!"
Having experienced successive battles in the other world, Sun Cheng was decisive when things happened. Once he realized the villa was not safe, he immediately made a decision.
When he came to the island, Sun Cheng hadn't brought anything other than two small Decepticons. After leaving the room, he had to rummage through the villa's lobby, but unfortunately, he couldn't find a raincoat. He had to return to his room and search for a while longer, finally gritting his teeth and tearing down half of the dust-proof curtain from the window to drape over himself, then climbed out from the balcony of his bedroom on the first floor.
Being rained on was better than staying here. Sun Cheng still remembered that during the day, he had looked from afar and seen that the area near a mountain forest four or five kilometers from the villa was heavily guarded. After asking the security guards who blocked him, he learned that it was the place on the island used to raise Velociraptors.
If their security system also had problems and these fierce beasts rushed out, the villa would be in danger.
As soon as he left the villa, the bean-sized raindrops hitting his face kept slapping against him. Although the half-piece of dust-proof curtain wrapped around him was slightly water-resistant, it was not as good as a raincoat, and it was soon completely soaked in the rainstorm, becoming heavy.
Even so, Sun Cheng was in no hurry to throw it away, keeping it wrapped around himself; it was at least better than facing the rainstorm directly.
After leaving the villa, he headed straight for the Yanjiu Zhongxin seven or eight kilometers away. If there was any place on the island that could be called safe, it was the Yanjiu Zhongxin.
For one, it was the earliest building constructed, with five floors above ground and two underground. Not only was the security center located there, but it also had an independent backup power supply, so he reckoned it was the safest place.
In the area from the villa to the Yanjiu Zhongxin, only some Parasaurolophus were kept in free-range. This herbivorous dinosaur had a docile temperament; otherwise, it would be impossible to raise them near people.
However, this also buried a hidden danger: if those Velociraptors ran out, there would be no better food source than this!
Sun Cheng jogged almost all the way to the Yanjiu Zhongxin. This afternoon, a Gallimimus on the island was killed, then Doctor Grant and the others lost contact, and before dinner, a team of security personnel was suspected to have met with disaster. All these signs proved that the island was very unsafe now, and he had to be careful, even more careful.
Running forward like this, he was, after all, a mortal in reality, not a machine that could be tireless.
As a result, after running through the rainstorm for twenty minutes, he saw a few trees by the side of the road not far ahead. Gasping for breath, he wiped the rainwater from his face, stood still to look around with slight vigilance, and then walked toward the trees, preparing to find a place that could shelter him from the rain to rest for a while.
Yet, Sun Cheng had just walked to the nearest tree and was just about to rest for a moment and wring the rainwater out of the curtain he was wearing.
Suddenly, a tall and sturdy figure lunged out from behind a large tree not far away and pounced straight at him.
Before Sun Cheng could react, he was pressed to the ground by the tall and sturdy figure, his right arm forced behind his back, while a cold object was pressed against his cheek.
Just as he reacted and was about to resist, he didn't expect that at this moment, a cold man's voice sounded beside his ear, "If you don't want to suffer, be honest. I ask, you answer..."
PS:
My mindset has been off lately. I've been annoyed just looking at the computer for the past two days. I didn't expect the burnout period for this new book to come so early.
The passion from when I started the book is gone, and there are problems with my work in reality. I don't want to do it anymore and want to find a new job. My family also looks down on me for being twenty-nine without even a girlfriend; they lecture me every day, and I just got scolded at noon.
Everything going wrong has made me feel unmotivated to do anything lately. After work, I don't want to type, and I don't even want to go home. I just want to ask a few friends out for drinks or play a few games, and I'm increasingly unwilling to write.
I will strive to adjust myself as soon as possible!
