Chapter 119: The Gaze in the Dark

~11 min read 2,034 words

Two consecutive explosions took away two velociraptors.

These ancient hunters truly lived up to the assessment given by the island's technicians; they were indeed cunning, ferocious, and intelligent.

Upon seeing that they could not gain the upper hand, and noticing reinforcements arriving, one of the velociraptors suddenly raised its head and let out a sharp, bestial roar. As if they had received an order, the remaining velociraptors stopped their entanglement, twisted their heads and tails, and vanished together into the torrential rain.

However, before retreating, the velociraptor suspected to be the leader turned its head to stare at Bili and the Major. The undisguised, icy killing intent and hatred in its eyes made these warriors feel a chill down their spines before it, too, submerged into the darkness.

"Trouble, we've been targeted by this beast!"

The Major walked to Bili's side while remaining vigilant, reached out to pull him up from where he was still lying on the ground, and said with some apprehension.

"Boss..."

Bin, with a desolate expression, also walked over. With grief on his face, he gestured a prayer in front of his chest.

The Major's throat moved. He patted Bin on the shoulder and walked a few steps forward. After seeing the remains of the soldier Aifei, whose body had been torn in half by the velociraptor, the Major—who had been cold-faced all along—could not help but reveal a hint of sorrow. Without a word, he stepped forward to take the dog tag and gripped it tightly in his palm.

"Heavenly Father, may your child return to the Lord's embrace..."

The remains of the mixed-race soldier Luobi had been blown to pieces by a hand grenade in Bin's earlier rage, and now, no one knew where the dog tag had flown.

The Major looked around a few times. He was ultimately forced to frown by the pungent smell of blood, but he remembered the dangerous gaze of the velociraptors before they fled and knew they could not stay here any longer.

"We must leave here immediately!"

After solemnly placing Aifei's dog tag into his pocket, the Major walked to the side of Bili, who was standing guard, and said in a deep voice. He raised his hand to wipe the rain from his face and looked at the rain, which showed no signs of slowing down, with an ugly expression: "We must find a place to shelter from the wind and rain as soon as possible!"

"Right, if we keep going like this, even an iron body won't be able to take it!"

After being washed by the downpour for a while, Bili was soaked through. Clothes sticking to the body absorb a large amount of body heat, and as special forces soldiers, they naturally understood the consequences of excessive loss of body heat.

The Major nodded and gave him a look.

He knew that the communications soldier Bin had the best relationship with Luobi and Bili. Now that Luobi had just died, he wanted Bili to go and console him.

However, Bin did not let the two down. After finishing his prayer, he just looked around with sorrow in his eyes for a moment. Without waiting for Bili to come over and urge him, he walked toward them. "I'm fine, Boss. Let's go..."

They were, after all, Elite Warriors accustomed to life and death, so there was no need to worry.

The Major squeezed out a stiff smile, patted him on the shoulder again, and nodded at him. Immediately, the smile on his face faded, and the three of them, along with the other soldiers who had rushed over to support him, returned to the large tree by the road.

"Let's go, we must leave here as soon as possible!"

After glancing at the mustachioed black Warrior who had approached him as if he had something to say, the Major walked over to Sun Cheng and asked in a deep voice: "I am Daqi, what should I call you?"

"Sun, just call me Sun!"

There were some foreign students at Nanjing University of Technology, and Sun Cheng had interacted with a few of them, so he knew the habits of foreigners. Thus, he only gave his surname, which made communication easier.

"Sun..."

Major Daqi uttered a syllable that wasn't quite accurate, but it was of no consequence. He stared at Sun Cheng and asked in a deep voice: "Are there these kinds of dangerous monsters everywhere on the island now?"

Two of his men had died, and he was clearly beyond furious at this moment.

However, Sun Cheng's performance earlier had clearly taken effect. Major Daqi assumed he was also invited to the island and was not the creator of those monsters. Coupled with Sun Cheng's repeated warnings to evacuate earlier, otherwise, a flurry of punches might have landed on him by now.

"No, only a few..." Sun Cheng shook his head. "Hammond shouldn't be that crazy. There are indeed dinosaurs everywhere on the island now, but most of them are herbivores and pose almost no threat to humans. The dangerous ones are the carnivorous dinosaurs resurrected by International Genetic Technologies. The number shouldn't be too high, maybe only a dozen or so, and at most no more than a few dozen..."

As for exactly how many carnivorous dinosaurs were on the island, it wasn't as if no one had asked Hammond that afternoon, but the old man clearly didn't want to answer that question. He only repeatedly assured the venture capitalists that the carnivorous dinosaurs were all locked in cages and that the island was absolutely safe. At the thought of this, Sun Cheng just wanted to slap that old face of his hard a few times.

Upon hearing this, the tension on Major Daqi's face eased slightly.

However, just those few dinosaurs had cost him two soldiers. Recalling Sun Cheng's mention of even more dangerous carnivorous dinosaurs on the island, his sense of crisis surged again, and he hurriedly asked: "Is there anywhere nearby where we can rest? With such heavy rain, it's not safe outside, we must leave here as soon as possible!"

Pointing in the direction where the velociraptors had disappeared, Sun Cheng sighed. "I came from that way. There are a few villas two or three kilometers away, but the security system was suddenly shut down, so it's no longer safe. International Genetic Technologies has built many buildings on the island; if you're looking for a safe place, it should be the Yanjiu Zhongxin!"

He pointed in another direction. "The place where the velociraptors are kept is not far from the villas. After discovering the security system was shut down in the villa earlier, I immediately fled. I was heading to the Yanjiu Zhongxin, which is still about four or five kilometers away from here!"

A four or five-kilometer journey wouldn't be long under normal circumstances, but with the downpour and the high possibility of dangerous carnivorous dinosaurs lurking nearby to ambush them, whether or not to head there was truly a difficult choice to make.

Fortunately, Major Daqi only thought for a moment before nodding at Sun Cheng. "We'll go to the Yanjiu Zhongxin, you lead the way!"

Sun Cheng felt a surge of joy. After seeing the velociraptors break out of their cages, he had already realized how dangerous the island was. Now, with the protection of this squad of soldiers, his own safety had undoubtedly been elevated to a new level.

"Fine, let's go quickly!"

After speaking, he wrapped the dust-proof curtain, which he had almost twisted open, back around himself and was the first to rush into the torrential rain.

Sun Cheng didn't want to stay here for even a minute longer. He was very worried about the Tyrannosaurus Rex kept on the other side of the island. That afternoon, he had heard from Doctor Malcolm that the Tyrannosaurus Rex had an extremely well-developed olfactory bulb and could easily smell the scent of carrion from dozens of kilometers away.

Calculating the distance, they were only about twenty kilometers away from where the Tyrannosaurus Rex was kept. If that place was like the velociraptor cage, he feared the scent of blood here had already been smelled by that prehistoric giant beast. If they didn't run now, it would be too late!

With him leading the way, the group quickly gathered their equipment and composed themselves, each following him into the heavy rain.

Sun Cheng's physical condition was decent, but he was not a soldier who trained every day. After running only a few dozen meters, Major Daqi and the Native American Warrior Bili caught up to him, running at the front, two or three meters to his left and right, not without the intention of protecting him.

The group ran wildly, and after only a few hundred meters, they entered a hilly area with dense trees.

As they were running along the road, Sun Cheng, who was wiping sweat from his forehead, suddenly felt as if he had bumped into something. He looked up and realized that the Native American Warrior Bili had stopped at some point and was standing there motionless.

"Why did you stop?"

He asked casually, but found that Bili didn't pay him any mind. Instead, Bili stood there straight as if he had truly turned into a wooden stake, his eyes fixed on a spot to the left, the veins on his temples throbbing incessantly.

Major Daqi also noticed his change. Having already run more than ten meters ahead, he turned back and asked with a frown: "Bili, what's wrong with you?"

He also followed Bili's gaze and looked to the left, where there was a high point on the hill with a few large trees.

Bili stared intently at those trees for a long while before shaking his head with a face full of confusion. "I'm fine, Major. I just caught a gaze from over there, it was probably an illusion!"

It would have been better if he hadn't said anything. As soon as he finished speaking, Sun Cheng felt a chill throughout his body; he had actually felt an icy, piercing gaze land on him, though it vanished in a flash.

Unable to stop himself from shivering, he carefully looked around, but noticed nothing. He couldn't help but wipe the rain from his face, and his skin broke out in goosebumps.

Upon hearing this, Major Daqi couldn't help but take out his binoculars and look over there, but unfortunately, he saw nothing.

Just as he was frowning, Sun Cheng approached him and asked: "Major Daqi, can you return my Camera to me? There are computers at the Yanjiu Zhongxin. If you need the photos inside, I can make a copy for you when we get there!"

Just a moment ago, he felt it didn't matter whether Revenge was by his side or not; when needed, it would transform and attack at his command.

But now, startled by the Native American Warrior Bili, Sun Cheng, who felt very insecure, felt unease rising in his heart again, which was why he approached to try and get his Camera back.

Major Daqi looked at him and pondered for a moment, but didn't immediately agree or refuse, as if he were calculating the pros and cons.

However, he was ultimately unaware of the Camera's special nature. After thinking for a while, he finally nodded and shouted to the soldier who had been keeping Revenge: "Halun, return the Camera to him!"

"Alright, Major!"

The soldier who had just been looking at Sun Cheng immediately took a Camera out of his backpack and handed it over.

Sun Cheng hurriedly thanked him, opened the curtain he was draped in, hung the Camera back around his neck, and then wrapped it up again.

He did not expect, however, that just after getting Revenge back, it would suddenly vibrate against his clothes.

Sun Cheng's heart stirred; this was the reaction he had set for Revenge to trigger only when there were outsiders nearby and important intelligence to report to him.

PS:

A late second update; I've finally found my rhythm and feel again. I'm thinking I should be able to manage three updates today.
