Chapter 164: Cybertron Technology
After the phone rang twice, someone quickly answered it.
"Hello..."
A familiar male voice came from the other end. Because his phone was still charging, Sun Cheng had to adjust his sitting posture to make it easier to talk. "Hello, Fourth. You called me a few days ago, is something the matter..."
Because they were former roommates who had lived together for over three years, their bond was naturally stronger than most.
Even though the whole business with Liu Kun had disgusted him, it hadn't affected Sun Cheng's relationship with the other two.
"You bastard, you're playing missing again. It's been several days and you haven't answered my calls..."
Upon hearing his voice, Li Meng on the other end immediately became indignant. His voice rose sharply, carrying a hint of displeasure.
Sun Cheng smiled and offered a few soothing words, only then hearing the Fourth's voice lower as he asked again: "What happened between you and Second? He came back covered in injuries last week, and it was Eldest who helped him ask for leave at school. A few days ago, he even said he found an internship a bit far from here and ended up moving out..."
Through the phone, Sun Cheng's eyes flickered, but he didn't respond.
After a long moment, he changed the subject: "Don't worry about his affairs, just let him be!"
In the end, Sun Cheng still cared somewhat about their years of friendship as roommates; otherwise, just for the despicable things Liu Kun had done, the fact that he had nearly been ruined by him would not have ended with just a sound thrashing and cutting all ties forever.
Li Meng had met with him before and had heard some rumors from him, otherwise there wouldn't have been these few phone calls.
Now hearing him say this, how could he not know that something must have happened between the two of them.
It was just that Sun Cheng didn't want to bring it up again, so he could only sigh inwardly and tacitly change the subject. "Alright, you guys handle it yourselves. By the way, why haven't you been answering my calls for the past few days?"
"I went out of town temporarily to meet an investor I met online. I was swamped those few days and only had time to call you back once I returned to Nandu. I'll treat you and Eldest to a meal in a few days. I can't talk now, I have a few more calls to make on this end..."
It took some effort, but he finally managed to brush off the Fourth.
Sun Cheng shook his hand to relieve the soreness from his awkward posture and redialed Yang Fei's number.
"Hello, Brother Sun. You finally returned my call. What have you been busy with lately..."
Yang Fei was an extroverted young man who possessed almost all the typical flaws of someone his age. The phone rang only twice before he answered immediately.
Hearing the impatience in his voice, Sun Cheng smiled and calmly repeated the same excuse as before. "I went out of town temporarily to meet a new investor. I was so busy those few days I barely had a moment to breathe, and only now have I had time to call you back... Why, do you need me for something?"
"You bet... Brother Sun, you just got back from out of town, so you probably don't know yet. Shen Peiyuan has finally been confirmed in his position, and now there are rumors everywhere that the school might be undergoing a reorganization..."
Upon hearing the name Shen Peiyuan, Sun Cheng was slightly taken aback.
He knew who this person was: the Executive Vice President of Nandu University of Technology.
At the end of the year before last, the President of Nandu University of Technology, Lin Beiming, had been undergoing anti-cancer treatment after being diagnosed with stomach cancer. In March of this year, it was rumored that due to his worsening condition, he had to submit his resignation before his term was even half over.
Since then, as one of the country's premier polytechnic institutions, the position of President at Nandu University of Technology had been fiercely contested by the likes of Executive Vice President Shen Peiyuan, the former President Lin Beiming's Assistant Zou Dongcheng, and another Vice President, Wang Wei.
It was said that not only these three, but many others in the domestic education system were eyeing the vacant presidential position at this top-tier polytechnic university.
After all, the President of Nandu University of Technology was a vice-ministerial level position, a status enjoyed by the presidents of only twenty-nine top universities nationwide.
After months of maneuvering by various parties, it seemed a winner had finally emerged.
However, it was estimated that many people would not like this result, because Shen Peiyuan, who had been in charge of school administration for years, was very unpopular within the school.
It wasn't that he lacked ability; on the contrary, Shen Peiyuan had worked at the school for seventeen years, rising from entry-level management, so he was certainly capable of handling administrative duties.
It was just that since the year 2004, tuition at Nandu University of Technology had been raised twice, both times shortly after he was promoted to Vice President and then Executive Vice President, so there had always been rumors in the school that he was the one who pushed for the tuition hikes.
If that was just hearsay, then there was one blame Shen Peiyuan absolutely could not shake off.
In the years 2009 and 2011, he twice suspended the comprehensive new technology research center project at Nandu University of Technology on the grounds of "excessive fiscal expenditure" and "the old building is still usable," forcing faculty and students to continue using the research center building constructed in the nineties, which made many people in the school dislike him.
Sun Cheng pondered for a moment and quickly realized what Yang Fei wanted to tell him.
A new official brings a new broom; after taking office, Shen Peiyuan, who came from an administrative background, might reorganize many of the school's projects.
He probably wouldn't cancel the startup project support directly, but he would certainly re-examine it cautiously, and might even clear out a batch of startup projects that only took money from the school without producing any results.
Clearly, he fit that description.
Sun Cheng wondered what the fuss was about; now that he understood, his tone was naturally indifferent, though he still thanked Yang Fei: "Is that so? I see. Thank you for the heads-up, but the school's reorganization won't affect me! What about you? The new investor I contacted on this trip is quite powerful. How about it, are you interested in giving it another shot with your Sun Cheng?"
He paused before continuing: "There's a contract. You still have classes on weekdays, so I'll give you an internship contract, three thousand a month..."
Sun Cheng knew his junior's technical skills quite well; as a Computer Science major, his foundation was very solid, no worse than the coders hired from the market. While he lacked experience, he made up for it with vitality and imagination.
Besides, he didn't have many people he could use right now, so he would be a good choice.
The reason he added the latter part was that he was worried the other party might distrust his abilities due to their previous failure.
However, he hadn't expected that as soon as Yang Fei heard him finish, he would agree readily: "Sure, as long as you don't mind, Brother Sun. I'll give it another shot with you..."
After chatting a bit more and agreeing on a time to meet, Sun Cheng hung up the phone.
Perhaps because he had been talking for so long and was thirsty, he put down the phone, shook his hand, stood up, walked to the refrigerator, opened it, and finished the remaining half of his drink in one go.
He went to the bathroom to splash some water on his face, then returned to the phone. Without sitting down, he picked it up, flipped through the call logs, pondered for a moment, and dialed.
"Hello..."
"Hello, is this student Sun Cheng?"
"Class Counselor?"
Upon hearing the voice, he immediately recognized it. The voice on the other end was none other than the Class Counselor who had been with him for several years in university.
His tone immediately became enthusiastic: "It's me, Class Counselor. What's up, do you need me for something?"
"Yes, there are some matters. How about this, it's hard to explain over the phone, why don't you come see me for a moment? It's about that startup project of yours!"
He hadn't expected it to actually come!
Sun Cheng curled his lips into a smile and agreed without hesitation: "Alright, I'll be there in a moment. I actually have some things I'd like to discuss with the school as well..."
Unable to hide the excitement in his eyes, Sun Cheng felt a stir in his heart, and a bulging document bag suddenly appeared in his other hand.
After hanging up the phone, he looked down at the document bag, his smile deepening: "Cybertron Technology, it's time to take flight..."
