Chapter 245: The Nest Reappears
The emergency phone, used solely for him to contact the mole he had planted within the United States government, began to ring!
In an instant, Sun Cheng realized the issue and hurriedly picked up the phone.
"Hello..."
After the call connected, an urgent male voice immediately sounded from the other side. The speaking pace was very fast, and even through the phone, he could sense the agitation on the other end.
"It's me, Braxton. I don't know who you are, and I don't care. Sir, you must have a lot of influence abroad, right? I need to leave the United States immediately and obtain a new identity..."
Braxton!
Actually, there was no need to hear the other party's name; the moment the communication number used by the other party appeared on the phone, Sun Cheng already knew who it was!
Kahn Braxton, a Senior Agent of the United States Central Intelligence Agency, or CIA for short.
The reason this guy was held under Sun Cheng's thumb was that his own hands were far from clean.
The CIA holds the vital responsibility for the United States' foreign intelligence gathering and spy operations, while simultaneously acting as a practitioner of American far-right expansionism.
Every year, the CIA waves around massive amounts of greenbacks and even weaponry, intervening wantonly in chaotic regions across the world, subverting political rivals of authorities, and funding anti-government armed groups. Sometimes, they not only take the field themselves to help transport weapons but even send people to help train military personnel.
The self-interest-first Americans have never been the type willing to pay out of their own pockets for others. Behind the scenes, the CIA charges for arms dealing and training anti-government militants; gold, gemstones, and foreign currency are naturally best, and when those are unavailable, they even accept narcotics.
As it happens, this CIA agent named Kahn Braxton is the person in charge of contacting South American buyers for the CIA to fence narcotics.
Money moves the heart; with Braxton guarding such a lucrative position, how could he not secretly line his own pockets?
According to Sun Cheng's investigation, this fellow had purchased seven properties abroad under various names and had deposited over seventy million US dollars in several banks under other identities, showing he had skimmed quite a lot of money.
However, these were not all the handles he had on Braxton. The reason Braxton was willing to submit to him was that Sun Cheng also held one of his most critical pieces of incriminating evidence.
This fellow was actually on intimate terms with a major drug lord in Mexico, not only supplying him with goods multiple times but even using his own connections to help the other party transport drugs into the United States for sale.
One can only say that some people are born with black hearts and are beyond saving.
Braxton is clearly one such person!
These thoughts flashed through his mind and vanished. Sun Cheng asked with interest, "Mr. Braxton, forgive my bluntness, but you have always seemed uninterested in working for me, haven't you? Why the initiative to contact me today? Let me guess: has your skimming of kickbacks from drug sales been exposed? Or has your help in transporting drugs into the United States for Duras been spotted?"
Sun Cheng had long been annoyed with this bastard who had fallen into his hands yet refused to work for him.
Had he not known that such characters are more effective when used at the most critical moment, he probably would have sent an anonymous tip-off email to the CIA long ago.
On the other end of the line, Braxton was so choked up by his retort that his liver fire flared; even through the phone, he could guess that the other party's expression must be very ugly right now.
Sure enough, the voice coming from the other side was filled with suppressed anger: "Sir, I am coming with sincerity. Don't you want intelligence on the NEST Project? I have already obtained it. However, if you aren't interested, then forget it. Anyway, I have plenty of good cards in my hand; at worst, I'll go sell them to Russia!"
It seems this guy's situation is indeed dire!
Sun Cheng raised an eyebrow. There is an unwritten rule within American intelligence agencies: when contacted by another country's intelligence agency, voluntarily confessing to one's own agency will not only avoid conviction but can also earn a commendation, because for American intelligence agencies, this is a very good opportunity to take the chance to counter-spy on the other party's secrets and transmit false intelligence to them.
However, there is one country that must absolutely not be touched or cooperated with, and that is Russia.
During the former Soviet Union era, the KGB went around the world challenging American intelligence agencies, nearly single-handedly almost toppling dozens of American intelligence agencies. For decades, the two sides constantly subverted, assassinated, and clashed with each other; it is no exaggeration to say they forged a blood feud.
Even after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Russia is still regarded as a major enemy by American intelligence agencies.
Braxton cannot be unaware of this; since he even shouted about defecting to Russia, it seems he is already at his wit's end.
Sun Cheng was indeed interested in the intelligence he held regarding the NEST forces. Since the battle at Base No. 1 in Saguache County, he hadn't received a single piece of intelligence about NEST.
At once, he withdrew his playful mindset and asked in a flat tone, "South America, Brazil—it is absolutely safe there. As long as your intelligence satisfies me, I can have you arrive in Brazil in a few hours! Furthermore, the previous promise remains unchanged. Regarding the NEST intelligence, I will offer three million US dollars!"
"Brazil, are you sure you can get me to Brazil?..."
Braxton asked urgently, "I didn't make it clear just now. I have already had my passport confiscated, and even my phone and residence are being monitored. Moreover, I can be certain that there are at least four CIA agents watching me!"
Inside the Laboratory, the smile on Sun Cheng's face grew richer. With a wave of his hand, a light wall appeared before him, projecting the communication records and times of all the calls Braxton had made using the phone he had gifted him.
Just as he had guessed, Braxton's current situation was very dire.
In the past half-day, he had used this phone to make at least sixteen calls, three of which were actually to the contact numbers of other countries' embassies in the United States.
At once, he pointed all of this out directly: "Hasn't this phone already proven my strength? Mr. Braxton, you have contacted so many people, but what was the final result? So, stop with the nonsense. I am not interested in what crimes you have committed in the United States; what I want is intelligence regarding NEST! Now, you must at least prove to me that you have value worth saving..."
On the other side of the phone, after a moment of silence, Braxton finally let out a light sigh.
"Fine. I have indeed obtained intelligence regarding the NEST Project. It is said to be the codename for a special operations force with an extremely high level of autonomy, reporting directly to the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the President. According to the intelligence I gathered, this unit is stationed at one of the United States' overseas military bases... I also hold another piece of important intelligence regarding NEST, but like the location of NEST, I won't tell you until I have safely arrived in Brazil..."
This time, it was Sun Cheng's turn to be silent.
After pondering for a while and analyzing the truth of Braxton's words, a long time passed until the breathing on the other side began to grow heavy, and only then did he speak slowly: "Understood. Tell me your current address. I will send someone to pick you up..."
