Chapter 275: Cybertron, Reporting for Duty!

~9 min read 1,726 words

Inside an office at the Nandu headquarters of the "Computer Home" website, a middle-aged man wearing anti-radiation glasses rubbed his sore eyes, then glanced at the time in the bottom right corner of the computer screen in front of him.

"Why is it not lunchtime yet..."

His name is Liu Yun, an editor for "Computer Home," a long-standing domestic computer website platform.

As a veteran with over a decade in the industry who experienced the "Golden Decade of the Internet," he couldn't help but think of those times during his spare moments.

Thinking back on the current popularity of the mobile internet and the decline of the traditional internet, he couldn't help but feel a multitude of emotions.

"The traditional internet with the PC as the terminal is truly finished. Such a large website, and the daily workload for reviews now doesn't even compare to a single day from a few years ago!"

As a review editor for a relatively professional domestic computer software portal platform, the time Liu Yun spent bored and dazed at work due to a lack of tasks was growing longer and longer.

It wasn't that he wanted to slack off; there was simply nothing to do.

In recent years, with the widespread popularity of mobile devices like smartphones and tablets that are more convenient to carry, the brand-new "mobile internet" has been devouring the market and influence that once belonged to the traditional internet at the speed of light.

Nowadays, more and more new entrepreneurs choose to embrace the mobile internet, which has led to the increasingly poor situation for software portal platforms based on the PC side, like "Computer Home."

Take Liu Yun, for example; as one of the review editors for the "Computer Home" platform, three or four years ago, the software uploaded to the site by developers that he needed to review every day would be no less than two or three hundred, requiring seven or eight editors to keep up.

Now, the number of new software entries per day doesn't exceed thirty or forty, and two diligent editors could probably finish reviewing them before it's even time to get off work.

"Computer Home" wasn't unaware of this; in fact, a year ago, it had already begun developing its own mobile platform.

Liu Yun had enough seniority that he originally had the opportunity to transfer to the mobile platform, but because he wasn't very interested in the smartphones that had exploded in popularity in recent years, he lost that chance.

Stretching, Liu Yun looked around and discovered that the other four editors responsible for reviewing new software entries were mostly in the same situation as him.

Because he was truly too idle, he was just about to get up to go to the restroom for a pee and wash his face while he was at it.

Suddenly, an exclamation mark popped up on the "Computer Home" work platform running in the bottom right corner of the computer in front of him.

Liu Yun reacted immediately, knowing that new software had been uploaded to the platform and was going through the review process.

He instantly perked up and smiled as he grabbed the task, "I was about to fall asleep, and finally, some work came in. A new piece of software, I'll review it!"

The few editors saw each other every day; they were as familiar as could be.

Immediately, a slightly plump woman smiled and replied, "Sure, Brother Liu, you take a look first. If it's not a type you're familiar with, we'll swap!"

Liu Yun nodded; reviewing software was much like reviewing web novels—every editor had their own specialty. For instance, he was quite skilled with tools, application software, and video software, but he knew nothing about games; if he really encountered one, he would indeed have to swap.

After agreeing, he clicked open the platform's bug report email and scanned it quickly. Liu Yun couldn't help but shake his head with a smile, "Cybertron Cloud Drive? What year is this, and there are still greenhorns daring to break in? Another one that will die on arrival..."

Instantly, the slight anticipation he had just felt vanished.

Beside him, a tall, thin man leaned over; it was his colleague, Yang Shuo.

"Brother Liu, what type?"

"Cloud drive. I'm truly impressed. In the last two years, there haven't been a hundred cloud/network drives that have collapsed in our country, then there have been seventy or eighty. Now, only the cloud/network drives under those few giants are still hanging on in the market. Tsk, and now someone actually dares to charge in..."

His voice wasn't quiet, and it immediately attracted the other editors responsible for reviews, who gathered around him.

"Hey, it really is a cloud drive..."

"Cybertron Cloud Drive? Which company's product is this..."

"Cybertron Technology Company? Never heard of it. A startup?"

A few editors gathered around Liu Yun and glanced at the computer screen in front of him. Upon discovering it was indeed a new cloud drive product, their anticipation vanished, and they began chatting away.

It wasn't hard to hear the regret in their words; clearly, these well-known platform review editors who dealt with software every day understood the current plight of cloud drive software all too well.

"No chance. I really don't know which newly established company this is. The domestic network drive market is already like that, and they still dare to break in..."

The editors gathered together, stood there chatting for a few minutes, and none of them were optimistic about this cloud drive product that hadn't even begun its review.

Liu Yun was the same, but since he was the one who had personally taken the job, regardless of his lack of optimism, he still had to review the product.

So, after a few minutes of delay, he downloaded this "Cybertron Cloud Drive" from the backend, where it was waiting for review on "Computer Home," to finish the review process.

The company's internet speed was fast, and the cloud drive client wasn't large either; the initial version was less than four megabytes. As the download progress bar jumped, the client was already finished downloading.

By the old rules, he ran a professional client detection software to ensure it wasn't carrying any malware or viruses before he clicked the client to begin installation.

The computer screen flickered, and the client's extraction interface popped up. The first thing to appear was a very exquisitely crafted LOGO; it looked exactly like a metal-forged fox mask (Decepticon icon), and at first glance, it gave one a sense of indescribable, eerie beauty.

"Cybertron, reporting for duty!"

Beside him, Liu Yun's computer speakers suddenly emitted a deep man's voice. It sounded full of vigor yet revealed a chilling coldness; rather than a professional voice-over, it sounded more like an electronically synthesized voice.

Liu Yun couldn't help but nod. Judging from the client's extraction interface, the developer of this cloud drive had at least put in some effort; he could add one point for that.

After the sound ended, the LOGO quickly disappeared, and a spinning progress indicator appeared. At the same time, a corresponding prompt appeared on the operation interface: "Hard drive scanning, please wait patiently..."

This process only lasted three or four seconds before the interface changed again.

"After detection, your computer has ample installation space. Drive D has 128G, Drive E has 204G, and Drive F has 179G. No external hard drives found. Would you like to install to Drive C by default?"

"Yo, this prompt is actually quite user-friendly..."

Yang Shuo praised it subconsciously. Usually, software would default to Drive C, though this also had to do with operating system settings. However, there were actually quite a few pieces of software on the market that forced installation to Drive C without any prompt, which was something that made ordinary users quite unhappy.

"Indeed!"

Liu Yun added another point for it in his heart, while manually modifying the settings to install it into Drive D.

After clicking again, the installation progress bar appeared once more and finished quickly. About six or seven seconds later, a brand-new account registration interface popped up.

Liu Yun didn't rush to fiddle with the installed cloud drive; instead, he first clicked open the monitoring software to scan it, nodding slightly, "Clean, no forced installation of other software..."

After adding another point for it, he clicked into the account registration interface to browse.

The registration page had nothing special. The only slight difference from the mobile registration that was becoming popular nowadays was that the 【Cybertron Cloud Drive】 account didn't force the use of a mobile phone or email for registration; instead, there were options to bind a mobile phone or email in the non-mandatory registration boxes below.

He registered an account at random and was just about to log in when he didn't expect a prompt to appear behind it: "Bind a mobile phone or email to extend the experience by one month?"

Using a paid model?

Liu Yun couldn't help but shake his head. The major network drive giants had long since proven with their dismal membership numbers that the paid model for network drives was very difficult to make work in the country.

If the giants were like this, one could imagine the fate of a new player entering the market.

Instantly, Liu Yun lost the desire to continue fiddling with it. After discussing it with a few editors, he gave this new network drive product named 【Cybertron Cloud Drive】 a barely passing score of six and passed the review, allowing it to officially land on the "Computer Home" platform for users to download.

However, because the developer was a new company with no reputation and the product type was a network drive, the score given by the review editor was only a barely passing one, so it didn't receive any platform recommendation resources and thus met the world in silence!

PS:

My bad. I woke up and saw that my buddy messaged me saying he discovered I uploaded the wrong chapter while reading the update.

This is on me; I was muddled from drinking yesterday. I will compensate everyone.

I will ask my editor if I can open a free chapter; if not, I will add a few hundred extra words to each of the next few updates.
