Chapter 597: The Final Battle Begins 4
The emergency notification from domestic NASA not only threw the Pentagon and the NEST forces into chaos.
The main force of the U. S. Fifth Fleet, which had just arrived in the Red Sea region and was currently awaiting orders from home, was hit the hardest and thrown into total disarray.
"Warning... warning, an unidentified cluster of meteorites has been detected about to crash into the Red Sea region; suspected to be Decepticons..."
"Warning... warning, an unidentified cluster of meteorites has been detected about to crash into the Red Sea region; suspected to be Decepticons..."
"Warning... warning, an unidentified cluster of meteorites has been detected about to crash into the Red Sea region; suspected to be Decepticons..."
"Quick, quick, quick, quick, quick..."
"Scatter the fleet formation..."
"All SSNs (attack nuclear submarines) and SSBNs (nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines) are to submerge and maintain silence while awaiting further orders..."
"All FFGs (guided-missile frigates), DDGs (guided-missile destroyers), and CGNs (nuclear-powered guided-missile cruisers) prepare to load anti-aircraft missiles immediately... repeat, load anti-aircraft missiles immediately..."
"All LHDs (multipurpose amphibious assault ships) and CVNs (nuclear-powered aircraft carriers) are to disperse; all naval aviation personnel on board are to take their positions, pilots are to prepare to board, await orders, and take off separately..."
It must be admitted that although the U. S. military has never been a force with strict discipline, as the military with the most combat experience since World War II, years of fighting across the globe have made the U. S. military the force best at summarizing experience.
A week ago, after the Second Fleet encountered an attack by Decepticons descending from the sky and its main force was completely wiped out, the Navy, the Pentagon, and even numerous military forums and professional military journals within the United States conducted detailed dissections and analyses of the Second Fleet's destruction.
Therefore, upon receiving the emergency notification that a meteorite cluster was about to crash into their area, although the main force of the Fifth Fleet in the Red Sea was in a state of great panic, orders were still formulated and transmitted quickly.
Then, the fleet assembled on the sea surface began to disperse.
Naval aviation personnel on several Wasp-class amphibious assault ships and Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carriers quickly reached the deck from cabins and lounges, began driving vehicles to refuel aircraft, loaded ammunition, towed them to the catapults, and pilots dressed and boarded, waiting for takeoff orders.
Nuclear submarines quickly dived to deeper waters, missile launch systems on all frigates, destroyers, and cruisers of the Fifth Fleet were prepared, and anti-aircraft missiles were loaded into the launch tubes one by one.
This most powerful naval fleet on Earth soon emerged from the panic, waiting for the enemy's arrival.
Not long after, the meteorite cluster falling from the sky could be seen clearly.
Fifth Fleet Commander Kerry Mapote accompanied the fleet to the Red Sea to execute a Task, and was currently staying on the flagship, the Truman nuclear-powered aircraft carrier.
When the meteorites in the sky became visible to the naked eye, the last shred of luck in their hearts vanished.
"... Commander, the radar has performed a final trajectory correction; it is almost certain that this batch of 'meteorites' is heading straight for our fleet..."
"I understand. Everyone, prepare for battle!"
When the meteorites were less than eighty kilometers from the target, the first batch of anti-aircraft missiles from more than a dozen frigates, destroyers, and cruisers of the Fifth Fleet took off one after another from launch racks and vertical missile launch tubes, firing toward the 'meteorites' falling from the sky.
"Area air defense network activated, conducting first interception..."
Explosions and firelight soon lit up frequently in the sky, just like fireworks rising on a holiday night.
It was just a pity that it had a bit more of the cruelty inherent to war.
"Tally the results immediately..."
"Report... eleven targets disappeared, the first round of interception took out about one-third of the 'meteorites'... detected that the falling 'meteorites' automatically adjusted their descent trajectories to evade interceptor missiles... it can basically be confirmed that the 'meteorites' are incoming Decepticons!"
"Order, second and third rounds of anti-aircraft missiles to launch... all aircraft to launch, prepare for battle... we must absolutely not let the tragedy of the Second Fleet repeat itself..."
"Yes!"
After the order from the Commander was issued, the second round of anti-aircraft missiles quickly took to the sky again, numbering as many as three or four hundred, whistling as they wove a fire-suppression net in the sky, attempting to intercept the incoming Decepticons that were already less than forty kilometers from the sea surface.
It was a pity that the results of this round were far inferior to the previous one; only seven Decepticons were hit by more than a dozen missiles in succession in the air, turning into a series of tiny sparks in the sky and disappearing completely.
Aircraft from the two aircraft carriers and two amphibious assault ships began to catapult and take off, and soon the sky looked as if there were many more flying birds.
When the third round of anti-aircraft missiles was launched, the incoming Decepticons were already less than five kilometers from the Fifth Fleet in the Red Sea.
The distance of five kilometers was covered in an instant; hundreds of anti-aircraft missiles rose again, firing toward the Decepticons getting closer and closer in the sky.
"Boom, boom, boom..."
Missiles shot up at several times the speed of sound, hitting the incoming Decepticons one by one in the air, causing the sounds of explosions to merge into one.
Unfortunately, what the U. S. military had to face were Decepticons, not real meteorites.
Although the power of this saturated air defense was quite astonishing, under the constant trajectory changes of the incoming Decepticons, nearly half of the Decepticons still successfully landed.
"Boom!"
During this, on the Truman aircraft carrier, two Decepticons landed on the deck, smashing several F-18 fighter jets that had not yet managed to take off into two pieces, and the explosion and impact left a terrifying crater on the deck.
Then, the two Decepticons quickly transformed into combat mode, raised their grenade launchers, and began to wreak havoc on the aircraft carrier.
"Stennis, take over command!"
As the bridge of the Truman was destroyed and the Commander's whereabouts became unknown, the Stennis aircraft carrier two kilometers away began to take over command.
It was relatively lucky, being the only warship that was not hit by the falling Decepticons.
And apart from it, the Truman, as well as the other two Wasp-class amphibious assault ships, all suffered attacks from the Decepticons.
Although not all fighter jets successfully took off, in the past ten minutes or so, more than forty fighter jets had already successfully taken off one after another.
After the Stennis took over command, they quickly formed combat effectiveness and began to launch a counterattack against the Decepticons that had landed and were destroying the Truman, the two Wasp-class ships, and other warships.
A war between the most powerful human nation on Earth in the Transformers universe and the Decepticon Legion had begun.
