Chapter 483: Covering the Spirit Vegetables
Qin Lang was sharp; he now understood Qin Bi's meaning.
Heh, still talking about Qin He's luck? Just wait and see how Qin He's luck turns out.
"I'm going home to eat spirit vegetables," Qin Lang said. "I absolutely won't show off."
Usually, when Qin Lang ate vegetables in his own courtyard, if he couldn't help but show off, who would know he was eating spirit vegetables? This time, the Wang He Shizi wasn't involved in planting vegetables; if he ate them in his own courtyard, even the Qin Yan Hou Fu wouldn't get any.
My goodness, keep it tightly covered.
Qin Di also said, "I will instruct your mother not to make a fuss."
Qin Bi saw off Qin Di and Qin Lang, along with Rong Juan. The little milk bun wasn't in a hurry to find Qin Bi; there were two large baskets of spirit vegetables, including his favorite chili peppers, each one fresh and vibrant.
The teleportation point was the outer courtyard of the Wang He Shizi's residence. It took a while for Rong Juan and Qin Bi to bring Qin Di and Qin Lang back.
By now, Rong Yang and the young prince had already picked the vegetables they wanted to eat. Dinner was almost ready: spicy duck with fresh chili peppers, plenty of them, plus sauce, smelling wonderfully fragrant.
Qin Bi held the little milk bun. "Did you miss me?"
"Missed you," the little milk bun said in a milky voice.
Qin Bi was delighted. Holding the little milk bun, she said, "Tell your older brother and the young prince what vegetables you want to eat. Ask them to pick good ones for you. You can eat your fill of spirit vegetables. First, eat the fresh vegetables I brought back."
Upon hearing this, the little milk bun squirmed and tried to get down.
Rong Chi said, "Pick vegetables."
The courtyard was dry and cold, so Qin Bi didn't put him down.
Rong Juan knew Qin Bi doted on the child. "Move the two baskets of spirit vegetables inside."
The Rong Wang He Shizi also doted on the child, but he didn't spoil him. However, since Qin Bi feared the child would catch cold, the Rong Wang He Shizi naturally complied. Guard Yan came over and moved the two baskets of spirit vegetables inside.
Why would a proper Commander of the Guards come to move baskets?
Guard Yan didn't leave; his eyes sparkled as he stared at the vegetable baskets.
"For the spirit vegetables we grew ourselves before, move a basket from the storage room." Qin Bi looked at Rong Juan. Rong Juan said nothing. Qin Bi instructed, "Half a basket for the advisors, half a basket for the guards, and send another basket of spirit vegetables to the Rong Wang."
Older spirit vegetables could be shared. Now that fresh vegetables were available, Qin Bi didn't mind distributing the previously grown spirit vegetables. Of course, the ones still growing in the planting pots would not be shared; anyone who wanted to eat could pick them.
Even with the previously stored spirit vegetables, Guard Yan was very happy. He clasped his hands and said, "Thank you, Wang Rong Shizifei."
Guard Yan strode away and called Lin Yao to move a basket of spirit vegetables from the storage room. With the Wang Rong Shizifei and the two young Wang He Shizi present, they didn't need to eat fresh spirit vegetables. As long as it wasn't fresh, the Wang He Shizi didn't mind taking a bit more from the storage room.
The subordinates were overjoyed, and Rong Yang and the young prince were happy too. Once inside, the little milk bun wouldn't let Qin Bi hold him anymore; he held onto the basket himself, poking his small head out to pick vegetables.
Don't let his small size fool you; the little milk bun has many tricks up his sleeve.
Rong Juan reached out to remove Qin Bi's cloak. "Why do the spirit vegetables grow so fast?"
Qin Bi had gone to the county under Qin Tan's jurisdiction before summoning. After the rain and snow fell, she planted the seeds, and spirit vegetables were ready to eat that same day. This had never happened before; even in the several lives Rong Juan had been reborn into, there had never been a day when spirit vegetables could be eaten so quickly.
They grew too fast, surpassing imagination.
"Another luck cluster from the Qin Yan Hou Fu has gone," Qin Bi told Rong Juan.
Rong Juan was surprised. The little auspicious cloud had gone, along with the little grain-abundance cloud. Another luck cluster from the Qin Yan Hou Fu had gone. Rong Juan was somewhat shocked; in previous lives, the luck clusters of the Qin Yan Hou Fu had never been this diligent.
Luck doesn't often leave cultivation families.
Qin Bi was in a good mood. She bent down and looked tenderly at the children. "Our Rong Yang and Rong Chi will have fresh spirit vegetables to eat."
The children were happy too, laughing loudly.
Seeing this, a hint of a smile appeared in Rong Juan's cold, stern features. He stepped forward and carefully folded the beast-fur cloak for Qin Bi. The maids didn't dare approach; the Rong Wang He Shizi didn't need their help. Whenever it came to his wife and children's belongings, the Rong Wang He Shizi did everything himself.
That evening, they had spicy duck paired with fresh spirit vegetables.
The young prince took a bite. "So fresh. The Chinese cabbage tastes even better than the ones grown before."
Rong Yang also took a chopstickful of spirit vegetables stewed with the spicy duck. "Really."
The little milk bun took a fresh chili pepper from his small bowl and chewed it. "The chili peppers smell so good."
Qin Bi couldn't sit still. There were still spirit vegetables in that plot of land in the desolate land. She wondered if the people at the county office had already harvested the vegetables. If not, she wanted to ask for more.
Rong Juan sent someone to Qin Tan's county office and requested another basket of spirit vegetables.
By now, most of the more than one mu of spirit vegetables in the desolate land had been harvested. Some planted later were not yet fully grown. Without the luck-induced rain and snow, the spirit vegetables wouldn't grow rapidly anymore.
Qin Tan discussed with the Assistant County Magistrate and decided to let these spirit vegetables grow a bit longer.
Technically, rain and snow had fallen over the entire county, and this summoning was already impressive. Qin Tan should have reported it to the Emperor. However, everyone had discussed it beforehand; the few who summoned would share the spirit vegetables and remain silent.
As long as Qin Tan didn't mind, the Assistant County Magistrate naturally had no objections.
That night, Qin Yan, Qin Tang, and their group returned from the desolate land. Qin He didn't come to the Qin Yan Hou Fu. It was very late, already dark, so Qin He went directly back to the Xue Wang Fu.
This time, Qin He didn't try to take credit.
Qin Bi waited, and Qin Lang waited too, but Qin He made no move at all.
Qin Di only stir-fried a few plates of spirit vegetables and didn't tell his two legitimate sons that he had brought spirit vegetables back. The next day, Qin Yan, Qin Tang, and the others went back to the desolate land.
Qin He didn't go; she was tired and told everyone she wouldn't be coming.
Qin Tan didn't return to the county office. Early in the morning, he went with the Assistant County Magistrate to the place where the desolate land had been opened. The Assistant County Magistrate invited the several families who had helped yesterday, deployed cultivators, and, in cooperation with Qin Tan, cut down the more than one mu of vegetable field.
It was deep winter, cold and frozen. The Assistant County Magistrate arranged for his subordinates to spread dry straw over the spirit vegetables to raise their temperature.
"Just need them to grow for another two or three days," the Assistant County Magistrate said.
Qin Tan nodded. "Keep it tightly covered. Do not make a sound."
The Assistant County Magistrate nodded. Having received his share of spirit vegetables, he wasn't the type to make a fuss for no reason. He wouldn't say anything. Qin Tan didn't want to report to the Emperor; the Assistant County Magistrate didn't know the reason and didn't pry. As long as the spirit vegetables were kept well, that was enough.
Qin Tan occasionally went to check the vegetable field. After all, these were spirit vegetables. In winter, even ordinary vegetables weren't available fresh. Being able to eat such fresh spirit vegetables was more than enough to feel content.
With these few baskets of fresh spirit vegetables, Qin Bi had the cook prepare delicious meals for the children every day. The little milk bun and Rong Yang stopped going to the Yan Guogong Fu. He Zu, worried, ran to the Rong Wang Fu.
Seeing that the children were only doing this for the food, He Zu felt relieved and returned to report to He Yan.
Two days later, Qin Di told Qin Tang and Qin Xun about planting the spirit vegetables. He had to tell his two legitimate sons and share some with them to eat. Qin Tang and Qin Xun looked utterly surprised.
"They can be eaten in one day?" Qin Xun asked.
"Yes," Qin Di nodded. "Another small luck cluster from our Qin Yan Hou Fu has gone to spread luck wildly."
Qin Tang and Qin Xun, hearing these words, understood why the spirit vegetables were being kept hidden.
