Chapter 59: It's Not a Spirit Vegetable Anyway
Qin Bi smiled and said, "Alright."
The child chattered away, asking, "How do you cook baby bok choy to make it delicious?"
"Boil noodles and add baby bok choy leaves." Qin Bi felt like eating it herself.
If it weren't for the fact that she had planted them, they wouldn't even allow eating the baby bok choy that hadn't fully grown. Even after following Third Uncle's family for so many years, Qin Bi had never been able to grow anything well, so how could she bear to dig up the baby bok choy to eat?
Without rain, nothing grew in the fields.
Rong Juan's eyes lit up as he pulled out a head of baby bok choy. "We'll eat one head of baby bok choy for dinner."
Looking at the baby bok choy, Qin Bi smiled. "Fine, we'll eat one."
What she grew herself was different; it wasn't a spirit vegetable, yet they treated it as if it were incredibly precious. Qin Bi handed a head of baby bok choy to the guard, who went to the kitchen to instruct the cook. The maids stood aside; there was nothing for them to do.
After playing with Qin Bi for a while, Rong Juan went with Rong Juan to study and had to do his homework.
As long as noble families didn't want to raise their children to be useless, they had to learn the guqin, chess, calligraphy, painting, horse riding, and archery. The children were busy every day and also had to attend court sessions. The Great Yan Emperor quite doted on the child.
Rong Juan himself was happy to attend court, so Qin Bi couldn't stop him.
The child was small in stature, looking just like a little adult.
A strong wind rose in the evening. After eating, Qin Bi went to sleep. Rong Juan sent Rong Juan to bed early; the child needed a lot of sleep, and since he was not yet half a year old, sleeping was his main activity.
When the child woke up in the morning, Rong Juan had him all ready, and the child took two heads of vegetables.
The guard carried the food box while Rong Juan took the child to attend court.
Civil and military officials went to court at Mao hour. Since Rong Juan had to bring the child, he was always the last to arrive. There was nothing particularly important happening in court today; the Minister of Revenue had only mentioned that it still hadn't snowed.
Since winter began, the Minister of Revenue had been hoping for snow.
"This..." The Great Yan Emperor looked at Rong Juan and He Yan.
Rong Juan was at a loss. He Yan said, "Your Majesty, Qin He said that Fu Bao can bring down auspicious snow. May we let Qin He's child try? A child born after swallowing auspicious clouds always possesses some good fortune."
The Great Yan Emperor didn't care whether it was spiritual or not; as long as it could solve the lack of rain and snow, he immediately said, "Try it quickly. My lord, you arrange it."
Rong Juan glanced at He Yan. It was Fu Bao again. He didn't want to stay in the court hall. He stood up from his small stool, formally said goodbye to his imperial uncle, and walked away with his bag.
The Minister of War asked the Vice Minister beside him, "What is the child holding?"
The Vice Minister shook his head and whispered, "I don't know."
The Minister of War also wanted to eat the spirit sweet potatoes to increase his cultivation base, but competing with a child for a bite of food would be undignified. The Minister pondered that it was probably spirit sweet potatoes again.
The young heir was doted on. Rong He Shizi, with a fate of killing his wife and having no children, had finally gotten this one child; no amount of doting was too much. Otherwise, if Rong He Shizi brought his child to court, the Prime Minister and the six ministers would have caused a scene long ago.
Arguing with Rong He Shizi was pointless; it was better to look at He He Shizi. This powerful minister's heir was so desperate for a child that he had gone mad, treating Qin He's child and Xue He Shizi's child as his own.
The little girl had eaten spirit rice and spirit vegetables since childhood, making her the most blessed treasure in the Great Yan Empire.
The child went to the rear palace to find the young prince. Yan Xun, chubby and wearing a small robe, ran over with a clatter. "Rong Juan younger brother, why aren't you in the court hall? You've run to the rear palace."
Rong Juan held up the small bag. "I brought vegetables for older brother prince."
"What vegetables?" Yan Xun poked his head in.
Two heads of vegetables he didn't recognize made the child frown.
As a young prince, Yan Xun had known many crops since childhood.
"Baby bok choy!" Rong Juan pulled out a head of vegetable.
"What??!!!" Yan Xun's eyes widened in shock. The child exclaimed, "Rong Juan younger brother, you actually dug up the baby bok choy before it grew? Oh my goodness!"
Other young princes wandered over, and upon seeing Rong Juan's vegetables, they were all shocked.
"Plant it here, plant it here..."
The young princes hurriedly found empty spots, bringing the vegetable roots, estimating they could still survive. Since the young princes were so eager, Rong Juan had to hand the baby bok choy to the older prince brothers, and the young princes planted the two heads of vegetables.
"We can eat them once they grow up," a young prince said, patting the soil.
Rong Juan nodded. Fortunately, he had eaten one head at home, or there would have been nothing left to eat.
Rong Juan's fiefdom was also lively at this moment. Lin Yao and Guard Yan simply couldn't believe it; the cabbage and radishes, once they got rain, changed almost every half day, growing rapidly. The cabbage leaves planted on the first day were already quite large.
The radishes had not only grown leaves; radishes were growing in the soil.
This showed that the soil was not poor; it was just lacking rain. Once the rain was sufficient, the growth was amazing.
Seeing the cabbage and radishes grow so promisingly, Qin Bi was happy and full of energy. She summoned rain to continue watering. Guard Yan and the others were not to be outdone, summoning plants to reclaim the fields.
Lin Yao went back once and bought cabbage seeds, radish seeds, mustard greens, and carrot seeds. He bought any crop that could grow as long as the ground didn't freeze.
After sowing the seeds and transplanting the seedlings, Lin Yao was extremely busy.
A farm girl hesitantly walked to a spot not far from Qin Bi and stammered, "Young Lady of the Heir, may I help? I am used to farm work, I don't mind hard labor, and I know how to sow seeds."
Qin Bi, with her clear mind and sharp eye for people, said nothing.
"Young Lady of the Heir?" the modest-looking young girl asked again in a low voice.
Qin Bi ignored her, and the girl felt somewhat unwilling to give up.
Guard Yan went over and drove the girl away.
Qin Bi sneered. Used to farm work? She looked like someone who did embroidery. Offering unsolicited service like that suggested her intentions were not simple. Qin Bi was busy reclaiming fertile fields for the child and had no leisure time to deal with such things.
Later, when farmers from nearby came, Lin Yao selected a few to help transplant the seedlings.
Among them were farm girls who were purely farmers with no ulterior motives.
Giving three copper coins per person was considered generous. Transplanting seedlings wasn't heavy labor; women and children could do it. Children from nearby villages also ran over, helping even without payment.
Guard Yan gave each child one copper coin to buy candy, making the children very happy.
Lin Yao estimated that they should plant sweet radishes in the field on the side, a bit further away from the cabbage field. This vegetable preferred sandy soil and didn't need much rain, so there was no need to plant it in the middle of the vegetable field.
The vegetable field in the middle had sufficient rain, and every vegetable looked fresh and juicy.
When they returned this time, they left two guards to watch the vegetable field. There was no choice; the vegetables were growing so promisingly one by one that anyone seeing them would be envious. Leaving such a large patch of edible vegetables behind made Lin Yao uneasy.
Qin Bi dug up a few more heads of baby bok choy from a cluster of fully grown cabbages, planning to take them back for the children to eat. It was her habit; she felt uncomfortable if she went out without bringing something for the children.
Lin Yao opened his mouth but ultimately didn't stop her.
Activating the teleportation array, the group returned to Rong Wang Fu.
"Mother." Rong Yang was already waiting.
"Rong Yang!" Qin Bi beamed, presenting her treasure: "I dug up some baby bok choy for you."
The child grinned: "I brought the baby bok choy into the palace, and planted it in the ground again."
