Chapter 120: Hunting? Or an Outing?

~10 min read 1,954 words

Early the next morning, before dawn, Zhang Fan was already too excited to sleep. After getting up, he went to the kitchen to prepare breakfast, and also prepared some portable dry rations.

When Ba Ke Er woke up, he noticed someone missing from the bed, immediately sat up, got dressed and started looking. He finally saw Zhang Fan's busy figure in the kitchen. Seeing this, Ba Ke Er hurried over to help Zhang Fan.

What Ba Ke Er couldn't understand was that Zhang Fan had prepared a lot of dry rations! Jerky! Flatbread and such, quite a lot! It was as if they were going on a long trip. Seeing that Zhang Fan had already prepared plenty of food, he kept busy anyway.

Ba Ke Er was even more puzzled, and asked doubtfully:

"Fan Fan, aren't we just making breakfast? Why prepare so much dry rations? And we're not going far—this much dry food will go bad if we can't finish it, what a waste! You agree, right?"

Zhang Fan heard this, rolled his eyes, said nothing more, put down what he was holding, walked up to Ba Ke Er and extended the hand wearing the jade ring. As soon as Ba Ke Er saw the jade ring on Zhang Fan's thumb, he immediately understood!

"Oh~ right! How did I forget that? But, Fan Fan, you say, can all this food really fit inside? Speaking of which, will food stored in this jade ring not spoil?"

Facing Ba Ke Er's foolish question, Zhang Fan couldn't help but show a black line across his face, helplessly explaining: "Ba Ke Er, didn't I say? The Beast God said this jade ring can store anything, but only inanimate objects! Living things can't be stored for now. Moreover, this jade ring can preserve freshness!"

Saying this, Zhang Fan took a beef patty he had previously stored in the jade ring. He continued: "Look, this is the patty I put in right after I made it; it's still steaming, while the patties outside have cooled! This shows the jade ring not only preserves freshness, but also ensures the food comes out exactly as it was when stored."

After saying that, Ba Ke Er shoved the beef patty into his own mouth, washed his hands, and kept working. Zhang Fan only stopped after making thirty large corn pancakes, thirty large beef patties, and thirty small beef patties. Then, in front of Ba Ke Er, he stored all sixty large pancakes in the jade ring.

Seeing this, Ba Ke Er had no choice but to bring out the remaining thirty small beef patties and the prepared vegetable-meat porridge to the table.

Zhang Fan quickly grabbed his utensils and joined him, sitting at the table with Ba Ke Er to eat breakfast.

After the meal, Ba Ke Er prepared to go out according to the plan they'd discussed the night before to catch small animals. Seeing this, Zhang Fan quickly took his own small knife, put it in the jade ring, and prepared to follow Ba Ke Er out.

Ba Ke Er saw Zhang Fan constantly following him and vaguely guessed his intention, but since last night they had agreed Zhang Fan would be responsible for researching other herbs with Wei Er and the others, why is he still following me?

Ba Ke Er thought for a while but couldn't figure it out, so he simply asked Zhang Fan directly, as he believed this was the simplest, most direct, and most accurate method.

Then, when Ba Ke Er asked him, Zhang Fan hemmed and hawed, speaking haltingly for a long time before finally managing to voice his idea. After speaking, Zhang Fan didn't feel relieved; instead he grew more anxious, thinking: I've said it out loud, but what if Ba Ke Er refuses to bring me along?

But undoubtedly, Zhang Fan was scaring himself; Ba Ke Er had already been delighted by his request, so of course he wouldn't stop him. After hearing Zhang Fan finish stating his request, Ba Ke Er was momentarily stunned, then, upon regaining his composure, he nodded vigorously with excitement!

This made Zhang Fan repeatedly worry that if Ba Ke Er kept nodding, his head would fall off! So, to secure his future happy life, Zhang Fan immediately told Ba Ke Er to stop nodding. At the same time, his hand wasn't idle; he quickly reached out to support Ba Ke Er's head.

After they decided, they closed the door and went to the clan leader's house to inform the elders. Having obtained the elders' consent, the two were about to leave when they heard Fei Er shouting from behind that he also wanted to go out with Mo De. There was no choice; the elders couldn't show favoritism, which would be unfair to Fei Er, so they also agreed.

Then, the four of them left the clan leader's house together; Ba Ke Er and Mo De quickly shifted into beast form, carrying Zhang Fan and Fei Er as they flew toward the outside of the tribe.

Along the way, Zhang Fan and Fei Er talked nonstop, either about herbs or about the Beast God. After all, here only Zhang Fan had seen the Beast God; Fei Er had actually wanted to inquire about it for a while, but because elders were always present at the clan leader's house, speaking of it risked them thinking he was gossiping about the Beast God, which would be disrespectful.

Upon hearing Fei Er's statement, Zhang Fan instantly thought of teasing him: "Fei Er, if what you say is true, then we are currently being disrespectful to the Beast God—if the Beast God found out…… aren't you afraid you'll suffer?"

Unexpectedly, Fei Er not only wasn't frightened, he laughed, laughing exaggeratedly, practically rolling forward and backward! This made Zhang Fan momentarily worry that Fei Er might lose his balance and fall off.

"Hahaha… Fan Fan, really? You're actually this timid? Considering you're someone who's seen the Beast God, and even a Divine Envoy, you'd still be afraid of this? Besides, the Beast God is so great, so wise and mighty—would he care about such things? Cut it out, okay? Those aren't words someone your age should say!"

After saying that, Fei Er kept laughing, but he didn't expect that laughing so loudly would cause him to choke on a mouthful of saliva, making him cough so hard he nearly rolled his eyes. This frightened Zhang Fan's group, so they hurriedly found a flat spot to land.

As soon as Zhang Fan got off Ba Ke Er's back, he rushed over to help Fei Er down from Mo De's back; seeing this, Mo De immediately shifted back to human form and began to help Fei Er catch his breath. It took considerable effort before Fei Er returned to normal.

Seeing this, Zhang Fan couldn't help but laugh, pointing at Fei Er and saying: "Look, look! I told you you'd suffer! You didn't believe me! Now, feeling better? Hahaha!"

Fei Er saw Zhang Fan seizing the chance to mock her and couldn't hold back: "Hmph! You're still laughing? Watch out, you'll end up just like me!"

Zhang Fan heard this, laughed even more triumphantly, even stuck out his tongue at Fei Er, saying: "Hmph! You think I'm like you? I won't choke on my own saliva!"

After teasing Fei Er, Zhang Fan took Ba Ke Er's hand and went into the woods to start setting traps for catching small animals. Seeing Zhang Fan leave, Fei Er also thought it was boring, so he quickly went with Mo De in another direction to begin setting traps.

After a morning's work, both Zhang Fan's and Fei Er's families had a bountiful harvest! All told, they caught dozens of small animals. Of course, they also caught a fair number of large ones, intended for today's lunch and their own dinner.

Zhang Fan thought, having finally come out after all this trouble, it was perfect for an outdoor picnic, so he didn't plan to go home to eat again; besides, having worked hard all morning, he was already hungry.

So, Zhang Fan and Ba Ke Er together took the game to the riverside, dividing labor: Ba Ke Er handled the prey, Zhang Fan gathered firewood and lit the fire. Before long, the grilled meat was on the barbecue rack.

Meanwhile, Fei Er and Mo De also went to the riverside to process the game, planning to use local ingredients to settle lunch before returning to the tribe. However, because the two families chose different spots, even though they were on the same riverbank, one was upstream and the other downstream.

Fei Er and Mo De, as a couple, upon reaching the riverbank, jointly processed the game, then jointly lit the fire and set up the barbecue rack. But after placing the meat on the rack, Fei Er threw up his hands and quit, even flopping onto Mo De's leg and falling asleep.

Mo De could only go along with it, after all, lately for the purpose of creating people, Fei Er had already been working hard for a long time, and besides he had to prepare dried vegetables for the family's winter consumption; yesterday he had spent the whole day in the pharmacy!

Mo De looked at the dazed Fei Er asleep on his own leg, smiled, his face full of indulgence. To him, Fei Er was his everything; suddenly recalling when his parents had just left him, it was only because the clan leader's family and Ba Ke Er's family had given him aid that he managed to survive.

Moreover, having Fei Er gave him the will and courage to keep going; each time he recalled these past events, Mo De felt immense gratitude! Not only grateful for Fei Er's kindness toward him, but also grateful that everyone treated him like a true family member.

From childhood on, Fei Er always seemed unafraid even if the sky fell; in truth, isn't it because he relies on himself? He constantly says he is his everything, and for himself, he is likewise not anything less than his everything!

Mo De waited until the meat was cooked, then reluctantly woke Fei Er to have him eat. After they finished lunch, they hurriedly erased any traces before returning to the tribe.

Meanwhile, after the meat was done, Zhang Fan took out the beef pancakes and corn pancakes he had prepared that morning from the jade ring, then wrapped the grilled meat in them and ate heartily with Ba Ke Er. After they were full, they rested a while by the river before beginning to clean up the fire's traces.

Once everything was ready, Zhang Fan and Ba Ke Er then carried the various-sized small animals they'd caught—about twenty or so—toward the trap site. Before they reached their destination, Ba Ke Er heard a series of wild boar howls coming from the trap area.

Ba Ke Er immediately hoisted Zhang Fan onto his back and sped over. Upon arrival, he looked into the largest trap and sure enough there was a medium-sized wild boar. Zhang Fan, who had been bewildered when Ba Ke Er suddenly hoisted him onto his back,

but as soon as he saw the wild boar in the trap, he immediately understood, quickly sliding off Ba Ke Er's back. He had Ba Ke Er go into the trap to tie up the injured wild boar.

After Ba Ke Er brought the wild boar out of the trap, Zhang Fan, momentarily curious, approached—yet upon looking, he discovered something astonishing! He hadn't expected it, but Zhang Fan had thought soybeans didn't exist on the Beastmen Planet, yet they unexpectedly appeared!
