Chapter 145: Exposing Yuantong

~11 min read 2,137 words

Yuantong looked aggrieved; he had no idea what relic of Tenggenier Bu Jingyun was talking about.

In reality, Yuantong's position as abbot was not rightfully obtained; the previous abbot had been secretly murdered by Yuantong.

Yuantong had long coveted the position of abbot, but the old abbot had always been in robust health and held a very critical view of Yuantong's character, so the old abbot would never have passed the position to him.

Yuantong was well aware of this, but the old abbot's martial arts were far superior to his own, making it impossible for him to strike.

It was not until one day, while he was out propagating Buddhism, that he inadvertently learned of a colorless, odorless, and latent poison; he knew his opportunity had arrived.

From then on, he would add a small amount of poison to the old abbot's meals every day, and as the poison slowly took hold, the old abbot's health grew worse and worse.

On a night of thunder and lightning, before the old abbot could announce his successor, he suddenly died and passed away.

As the only remaining member of the "Yuan" generation, Yuantong naturally and rightfully sat in the abbot's seat.

Although many in the temple suspected the cause of the old abbot's death, Yuantong had quickly arranged the funeral after taking office, so no investigation could ever begin.

Because the old abbot had not made any final arrangements, there were many things Yuantong did not know.

For instance, Tenggenier in the Forbidden Land and the items Tenggenier had left with the old abbot.

Fortunately, however, the old abbot's relics were all kept in his room, and under the pretext of mourning the old abbot, Yuantong had not moved into the old abbot's room.

One reason was to gain the support of the old abbot's faction, and the other was that he felt guilty and worried that the old abbot would turn into an evil ghost to seek revenge on him.

Yuantong led Duan Fengyun and the others to the old abbot's room, and he pointed to the room and said:

"Great heroes, this is the old abbot's room; the items you speak of should be inside.

I will not go in; I am afraid that seeing the objects will make me think of the person and remind me of the old abbot."

Duan Fengyun felt that this Yuantong definitely had something to hide, but he did not expose him, deciding to wait until he had obtained the Liangji Sword.

Since Yuantong had spoken, they did not stand on ceremony, and Bu Jingyun pushed the door open with one hand.

The group walked into the old abbot's room and began to search.

After some searching, the group found a box at the foot of the old abbot's bed.

The box was about one meter long, and a large lock secured it.

The group searched for a long time but could not find the key to the box.

Finding nothing, Duan Fengyun chanted "Amitabha" and drew the Yellow Emperor Sword to slice the lock open.

Long Er pulled away the broken lock and opened the box.

Inside the box lay two swords, a large and a small Zimu Twin Swords; these were the Liangji Sword, forged by Tenggenier from his own Persian sword and the heirloom sword of the Wu Family.

Without the Liangji Sword Technique, the Liangji Sword would merely be two Zimu Twin Swords.

But if the Liangji Sword were united, it would be one of the top peerless divine weapons in the pugilistic world.

Long Er held one sword in each hand and slowly recited the incantation for operating the Liangji Sword.

Then he threw the swords out with both hands, and the two swords merged in mid-air to become a black-colored sword; this was the true appearance of the Liangji Sword.

Long Er stood up, took the Liangji Sword, and happily touched his family's heirloom sword.

Long Er excitedly raised the Liangji Sword to show off to Duan Fengyun and the other four:

"Dad, Uncle Shuang, Uncle Feng, Uncle Yun, look, my family's divine sword."

The group nodded, and Duan Fengyun took the Liangji Sword from Long Er's hand.

With the Liangji Sword in hand, Duan Fengyun gained a profound understanding of this blade.

The sword's weight was moderate, the blade was clear, and the Sword Intent was extremely strong; it was indeed a rare and formidable weapon.

With the blessing of this sword, Long Er would surely be like a tiger with wings when traveling the pugilistic world.

After Duan Fengyun praised the Liangji Sword, he tossed it back to Long Er.

Duan Fengyun then saw another letter in the box and opened it to read:

"Fated one, when you see this letter, this old monk should already be no longer of this world.

This old monk knew that Yuantong was poisoning my meals every day, but the Buddha says, 'If I do not enter hell, who will?'

Let this old monk's death serve to reform Yuantong; I hope that after I die, Yuantong can lead Motuo Lanruo Temple well.

Additionally, in the Forbidden Land, a Persian swordsman named Tenggenier is imprisoned.

Years ago, he came to my Motuo Lanruo Temple to challenge us, but he ended up suffering from Qi deviation during the final battle.

His martial arts were formidable, and to prevent him from harming the pugilistic world and causing suffering to the people,

we imprisoned him in the Forbidden Land; during that time, his pregnant wife came looking for him.

But for the sake of peace in the pugilistic world, we did not let them meet.

The two swords in the box are the Liangji Sword he brought, which our temple has kept in custody.

If his descendants come looking, please pass this sword on to them.

This old monk, Yuanfang, wishes for the land of Shenzhou to be forever peaceful and prosperous, and for the people to live and work in peace."

Through this letter left by Yuanfang, Duan Fengyun and the others finally understood the ins and outs of the matter.

No wonder this Yuantong looked so sneaky; one could tell at a glance he was not a good person.

He and Yuanfang were the only ones left of the "Yuan" generation; after Yuanfang's sudden death, he was definitely the greatest beneficiary.

Who would have thought that even a holy place of Buddhism could have such a dark side.

If even Buddhism is like this, then what must the treacherous pugilistic world be like?

After some discussion, everyone decided to expose Yuantong's true face and restore peace to the Buddhist sect.

Duan Fengyun had Long Er separate the Liangji Sword again and then hide both of the Zimu Twin Swords.

Duan Fengyun tucked the letter into his clothes, and then the group walked out of the room, pretending they had found nothing.

Seeing them come out, Yuantong stepped forward and asked:

"Great heroes, did you find what you were looking for?"

Duan Fengyun shook his head and replied:

"There is none. It seems Tenggenier's relics are not here.

Abbot Yuantong, do you know if the old Abbot had any other places where he kept things?"

Yuantong shook his head and replied:

"There are none. The old Abbot usually didn't have many belongings, and even if he did, they would certainly be in his room."

Seeing this, Duan Fengyun said:

"Perhaps there is something you are unaware of, Abbot Yuantong. See if you can gather the people in the temple and ask them to see if anyone knows."

The plan of Duan Fengyun and the others was to expose Yuantong's true colors in front of all the monks.

In order to send these plagues away as quickly as possible and return to his life as a carefree mountain king, Yuantong didn't even think about it and agreed immediately.

At Yuantong's command, the monks in the courtyard were soon gathered.

After all the monks had gathered, Duan Fengyun and the others walked out, but Duan Fengyun, who was about to speak, was interrupted by a sudden voice.

"Master, your disciple has returned.

Master, I have missed you so much."

A loud shout rang out from outside the temple, and Yuantong turned pale at the sound.

Duan Fengyun silently observed Yuantong's expression, and through it, he knew that the person arriving was definitely someone Yuantong did not want to see.

Soon, the owner of the voice arrived at the temple, seeing all the monks of the temple gathered there with Yuantong standing at the front.

He looked at Yuantong and said:

"Uncle Master Yuantong, where is my master?

With such a grand formation, why is he not here?"

Yuantong replied

saying:

"Yiyou, there are honored guests here, do not be rude."

Immediately, Yuantong introduced the monk's identity to Duan Fengyun and the others.

"Great heroes, this is my Senior Brother Yuanfang's eldest disciple, Yiyou.

He does not like to follow the temple rules, so he was sent out by Senior Brother Yuanfang to spread the Buddha Dharma."

Yuantong then introduced them to Yiyou:

"This is the great hero Duan Fengyun, the great hero Qin Shuang, the great hero Bu Jingyun, and the great hero Nie Feng; they are all renowned figures in the Jianghu."

Since there were honored guests present, his master should have been present as well.

Yiyou looked for a long time but still did not see his master's shadow, and a foreboding premonition arose in his heart.

He asked:

"Uncle Master Yuantong, let's not talk about that, where is my master?"

Seeing this, Yuantong could only pretend to be sad and cried:

"Your master, my Senior Brother Yuanfang, suddenly died of a sudden illness a few nights ago and has already passed away!"

"What! My master was perfectly fine, how could he suddenly die of a sudden illness?

Uncle Master Yuantong, did you not investigate what happened?"

Yiyou roared, unwilling to believe that the master who treated him like his own son was gone overnight.

Yuantong shook his head and said:

"I investigated a lot, but there were still no results.

Senior Brother Yuanfang suddenly died overnight, and we are all unaware of the situation."

Yiyou stood frozen in place, as if he had accepted this result.

Seeing this, Duan Fengyun felt it was time to add a little oil to the fire.

He said to Yiyou:

"This Master, I know the true cause of Abbot Yuanfang's death."

Upon hearing this, Yuantong's face changed drastically, and his feet began to slowly retreat.

But the quick-eyed and swift-footed Nie Feng and Bu Jingyun had already stood on both sides of him, preventing him from leaving and making him finish this play.

Yiyou fell to his knees in front of Duan Fengyun with a thud and said:

"Great hero Duan, please show me the way.

I must know the true cause of my master's death.

If I find out that someone harmed my master, I will definitely make them die a miserable death."

Yiyou no longer looked like a monk; his whole body was filled with killing intent, and the entire temple hall was permeated by his surging murderous aura.

Duan Fengyun took out the letter sealed by Yuanfang from his chest; he had previously prepared to read it to the monks himself.

But since Yiyou was here, let Yiyou handle this matter.

Yiyou carefully took the letter from Duan Fengyun's hand; this was the only source of knowing his master's true cause of death, and he had to protect it well.

He opened the letter and began to read.

Immediately, his eyes turned red as he looked at Yuantong, and then he read the letter again.

After reading the entire letter, he looked up to the sky and roared:

"Master, you died so unjustly.

I never thought that even at the moment of your death, you were still thinking of others, yet the person who harmed you is living freely and easily.

Master, you are truly too compassionate."

After finishing, he stared fixedly at Yuantong and said:

"Yuantong, my master and you were fellow disciples, why did you harm him?"

Yuantong explained:

"Nephew Yiyou, there must be some misunderstanding here; you must absolutely not let yourself be provoked and driven apart by others."

At first, Yiyou also thought that Duan Fengyun and the others wanted to provoke and drive them apart.

But there were many small details in the letter that were his master's writing style, which others could not imitate, let alone Duan Fengyun and the others who had just arrived.

Therefore, he did not have the slightest doubt about the authenticity of this letter.
