Chapter 29: Chapter Twenty-Seven
"Then what? In broad daylight, what are you going to do?"
"Bai Ziling..." Di Zhiwei was truly torn. "Do we really have to play this game? I don’t mind if I get beaten to death—but is it worth it? If you didn’t care about my cousin, you wouldn’t have rushed down from the mountain. Since you came, and my cousin is safe..."
"Di Zhiwei, are you even a man? Haven’t you been chasing me all this time?" Bai Ziling linked her arm through his. "I accept your pursuit."
"But you clearly said..." He was confused. "Don’t toy with me—I can’t take your back-and-forth!"
"Bai Ziling, that’s enough!" Jiang Jie stepped forward and pulled them apart. "I can’t watch this anymore!"
"Then goodbye." She turned to leave.
Jiang Jie pulled her in front of him, gripping her chin, his anger rapidly building.
"I just came back from the gates of death—I’m alive by sheer luck. If you’re still going to throw tantrums and act childish, then I’m done!" Jiang Jie was a man, after all—his patience had limits.
"Done is done!" Bai Ziling said stubbornly.
"You two..." Di Zhiwei, caught in the middle, felt utterly baffled.
"Bai Ziling, this is your last chance—think carefully."
She cried out: "Crystal clear!"
"I won’t go up the mountain again." He looked like a man who meant every word.
"Whoever fails is a pig!" She wanted nothing more.
"I’ll have my lawyer send you the divorce agreement."
"Thank you!"
"If this is truly what you want..." Jiang Jie had given up. Some things simply couldn’t be forced. He had tried. He was exhausted. "The people in my hospital room earlier were Yu Siqi and Cen Shi—I told you about them. I don’t know where you got it wrong, but that’s the truth."
Bai Ziling froze. Had she misunderstood?! Was it her own misinterpretation, her failure to investigate properly—or...
But Jiang Jie turned away. This time, he was no longer humble, no longer enduring humiliation. If Bai Ziling was never meant to be his, then even if he laid his dignity at her feet for her to trample, it would be useless. He decided to leave everything to fate.
Watching Jiang Jie’s back, Di Zhiwei helplessly glanced at Bai Ziling again, raising his hands in surrender. "I give up on you two."
"Di Zhiwei, am I really..." Bai Ziling started crying again.
"I’m done!" Di Zhiwei snorted. "Your problems—you sort them out yourselves!"
After Jiang Jie finalized the decision to relocate the company headquarters to Shanghai on the mainland, every department sprang into action. Even those who bitterly resisted leaving Taiwan prepared for "emigration," lured by high salaries and the fear of unemployment.
For this period, Jiang Jie was too busy to think of anything or anyone. All his energy and focus went into the "landing" operation. The divorce agreement had already been sent—he had no ties left, and could now truly fight for the mainland market.
But even with such mental preparation, seeing Di Zhiwei stroll into his office with a relaxed expression, he felt an urge to strangle him.
"Express delivery!" Di Zhiwei dropped a large envelope onto Jiang Jie’s desk.
Jiang Jie shot the envelope a sour glance—he knew what it was.
"Nothing to say?" Di Zhiwei wore the satisfied air of a man who’d completed his mission. "Then I’m heading up the mountain."
"Up the mountain?!" Jiang Jie assumed Bai Ziling had returned to her cousin’s place.
"Yes! To chase Tong Yiwen, I have no choice but to go up the mountain."
"Tong Yiwen?!"
"Bai Ziling’s cousin!"
"Then what about Bai Ziling?" Jiang Jie didn’t understand how things had turned this way. "Di Zhiwei, are you playing both sides?"
"I didn’t borrow courage from heaven. And what does Bai Ziling have to do with me? We’re just friends—at most, she might call me cousin-in-law someday." Di Zhiwei grinned slyly.
Jiang Jie clenched his fists, feeling utterly helpless, confused, and furious.
"I heard her flight is at noon," Di Zhiwei said casually.
"What flight?" Jiang Jie’s heart skipped half a beat.
"Bai Ziling sold her coffee shop, took the money, and is flying to Canada for study abroad. Her flight leaves for Vancouver at noon today."
"You’re telling me now?!" Jiang Jie shot up from his seat.
"Still time," Di Zhiwei checked his watch.
"I’ll kill you!" Before he finished speaking, Jiang Jie bolted out the door.
"Kill me?" Di Zhiwei muttered to himself. "If you can’t stop Bai Ziling from leaving, I think you’ll kill yourself first!"
Xia Zhen, Chang Weiwei, and Sima Xingchen came to the airport to see Bai Ziling off. Though they felt a pang of parting, studying abroad wasn’t immigration, so there was no heavy sorrow—only concern for her mental state. After all, Bai Ziling was now single again—but was this truly what she wanted?
"Bai Ziling, take care!"
"Don’t casually date foreign guys—stick to domestic products."
"We’ll wait for you to come back."
Bai Ziling only nodded, silent—afraid she’d burst into tears at the airport. She had no desire to go to Vancouver. Her English was terrible, and she knew no one there—who could save her?!
But now, aside from leaving temporarily, what else could she...
"Bai Ziling!" Jiang Jie’s loud voice echoed through the airport’s departure hall. Everyone turned toward him.
"She won’t leave," Xia Zhen smiled.
"I knew I didn’t need to come today," Sima Xingchen murmured.
"I need to go home and feed my baby," Chang Weiwei said. "That cold-blooded professor is going to bang his head against the wall now!"
Before Jiang Jie reached her, Bai Ziling dashed toward him. He opened his arms—but just before she crashed into him, she stopped short. He had to retract his arms.
"You... aren’t going to Shanghai?"
"You... aren’t going to Canada?"
"I already signed it!" Bai Ziling said reluctantly.
"It can be canceled," he replied.
She asked eagerly: "Really?"
"We’ll just marry again."
"So... I can really be your wife?!" Bai Ziling’s nose tingled with tears—her happiness had never left her grasp.
"As long as you want—I’ll be your husband for life!" Jiang Jie pulled her into his arms, as if afraid she’d fly away or vanish. He held her so tightly she could barely breathe. "Ziling, from now on, everything before is erased."
"You really want to be tied to me for life?" She looked up at him, pouting. "Can you handle me?"
"I don’t understand all women—but I’m slowly learning you..."
Her eyes widened. "Really?"
"Give me a little more time... those three words..."
"Jiang Jie, whether you can say those three words doesn’t matter—it’s whether you can live them!" She gently interrupted him. "We’re both learning. I’m no better than you."
"Ziling..."
"Thank goodness you didn’t let me board the plane—otherwise..." She shuddered, sticking out her tongue. "I never even imagined what Vancouver looks like—how could I study there?"
"I’m not that interested in Shanghai either. Taiwan is home—our roots are here..."
"Speaking of ‘home’... can we go back now?"
"What about Xia Zhen, Chang Weiwei, and Sima Xingchen?" He tilted his head toward them; they waved at him with smiles.
"Let them go home themselves," Bai Ziling beamed brighter than flowers.
"Is this love-at-first-sight betrayal of friends?" He teased her.
"They’ll understand!" She nodded to the three women.
"After all, we all caught a Jin Guixu."
