Chapter 5: First House Call

~8 min read 1,411 words

He exhaled a puff of foul air, and Ji Ming opened his eyes on time.

Being in Sunlight City, even on the second floor, he hadn't installed transparent glass for himself, so he could only see the daylight already spilling outside the window.

After modestly and politely agreeing to the commission, he quickly placed an order for an RTX4090 and cleared his Steam wishlist.

To save time, he chose to return to the Yangyue World to sleep.

Although taking all this was mainly because of money, it wasn't only because of money.

In any case, he was already in the game, and he knew perhaps too much.

That world will seemed harmless to humans and beasts, its wording polite to the point of being a bit childish.

But it only took a few minutes to pull in five‑figure funds.

If it got angry enough to flip the table and tear its mask, who would suffer the loss?

Since the gamble has no guarantee, it's better to exit decently with some cash, gaining room for future moves.

As for the venue…

Ji Ming's thinking was very clear.

In fact, including the debt, the root of all problems is that he is too weak right now.

After advancing from level 1 to 2, the system showed that reaching level 3 requires 110 experience points.

It's not the direct doubling Ji Ming imagined, and as the appointed savior he doesn't need to grind monsters; he can earn extra experience just by taking commissions.

Once he raises his level a bit more, at worst he can set up camp on a desolate mountain, recruit a bunch of players to become bandit lords.

A fantasy version of Mount & Blade, thinking about it feels pretty cool.

After tidying the lobby, Ji Ming waited until daylight was bright before opening the doors for business.

After sitting behind the counter for a while, a tall figure slipped into the Clinic, followed by a familiar boy.

"Doctor, hello, this is Mo Dun, he's Bei Li's father."

With Charlie's introduction, the big‑bearded man grinned, showing a smile that could kill.

"Doctor, hello, I am Mo Dun the blacksmith from East Street."

"Oh, hello friend, I am Ji Ming, the doctor of this Clinic."

Ji Ming extended his hand to shake his, and his own frail frame compared to Mo Dun was like a living wooden stick.

That made him unable to resist opening the panel to take a look.

Although the blacksmith isn't a professional class, his explosive muscles pushed his Qi and blood over twenty, comparable to a seasoned warrior apprentice.

Having such a peerless hunk as a father, it's no wonder Bei Li has such a fine side‑blade.

"Thank you again for saving Bei Li's life, Dr. Ji… Jimmy?"

"It's Ji… never mind, just use whatever sounds smooth to you."

"Heh heh."

He forced a laugh twice, and Mo Dun fished a purse from his pocket.

"We appreciate your kindness, but these fifty‑four copper coins cannot be omitted; they are Bei Li's consultation fee, please accept them."

Sss—

Ji Ming looked up at Mo Dun, and this seemingly rugged man seemed quite savvy.

Indeed, this is Sunlight City; the incompetent fools have long died in the dark alleys.

"Alright, then I, Ji Ming, will hand you over, my friend."

A smart person will need it sooner or later; he silently noted the name Mo Dun in his mind.

Then he took that treasured sword from the cabinet and thrust it into Mo Dun's hand.

"No need to worry, a young person's recovery ability is strong; as long as you take care, it'll be fine."

Mo Dun hurriedly nodded.

With money and goods settled, logically the adult and child should leave now.

But both of them just stood there, eyeing each other, each seeming to have something to say but holding back.

He shifted his shoulders and adopted a posture convenient for a quick escape.

"Is there anything else you both need?"

Mo Dun slung the sword at his waist, nervously rubbing his hands.

"I must admit, I'm not sure if you, doctor, accept house calls?"

Ji Ming didn't answer directly, but pushed his glasses back.

"First, describe the patient's condition."

As the saying goes, many people make a strong force, and the same applies to adventurers.

Just like various groups on Earth, they also form relatively fixed parties to adventure together.

For example, the Iron Rope Squad that Charlie and Bei Li joined.

Level 10 is a watershed; every professional who advances from apprentice to trainee should not be underestimated.

Take the Iron Rope Squad's captain, Si Tong, who is an 11‑level trainee crossbowman; after releasing auxiliary magic, his sharp arrows can pierce stubborn stone.

Precisely because of that, his team counts as a gathering of strong ones.

Besides a soon‑to‑breakthrough level‑9 warrior and an experienced old hunter, there's also a mage apprentice capable of fireball and earth‑shield spells.

However, in the last adventure, besides Bei Li getting injured, that mage also suffered a strange ambush.

She was afflicted with an inexplicable curse, her head splitting in pain, tormented all night with no relief.

Si Tong stayed up all night to seek the clinic's master mage, but after he arrived everyone just shook their heads; apart from tacking on an extra house‑call fee, it was useless.

A proper doctor is useless; what about a rustic country healer?

Charlie and Mo Dun conferred on the road and thought of the somewhat capable Ji Ming.

After they finished their description, the system promptly popped up a prompt.

After stitching so many needles into Bei Li's calf, the system only gave ten experience.

Investigating the curse issue, the system surprisingly offered a high price of thirty experience.

Anyway, at worst we could earn a consultation fee, so Ji Ming agreed to their request.

He changed into a more low‑key burlap coat and covered half his face with a hat.

"Let's go."

Dim clouds shrouded the sky; Sunlight City is like this for most of the year.

The narrow road was flanked by dense buildings; a beggar with a festering sore sat in a corner, and the wall behind bore indelible bloodstains.

Further away lay a faint, shimmering light curtain; this massive formation that could repel all attacks divided Sunlight City into inner and outer sections.

This was Ji Ming's first step out of the Clinic after transmigration; if not for two reliable sword‑bearing guards accompanying him, he wouldn't have wanted to leave at all.

The interior is the Inner City—bustling, comfortable, full of pleasures and horses—and is the true Sunlight City.

The exterior is the Outer City—dilapidated, chaotic everywhere, where the darkness under the sun resides.

However, with a man on each side protecting him, the journey was fairly safe.

Occasionally a few bandits, sharpening their knives and eager to strike, would have their eyes instantly clear upon seeing Mo Dun's coiled muscles and the cold blade at his waist.

"Just a joke, gentlemen, please, you…"

After passing the last alley, the three of them arrived at an apartment.

"Si Tong, Anna, I've brought a doctor along."

They pushed open the door; the room's furnishings were simple, and two people sat beside a low square table.

The man's unkempt beard showed worry, and his rough fingertips revealed his status.

The woman kept flipping through the book in her hands, her short brown‑ish hair a tangled mess from frustration.

Under the heavy clouds, dim light spilled in from the window, and a girl lay on the innermost bed.

She bit her teeth hard, her otherwise delicate cheek twisted into a knot.

If she hadn't been bound by rope, the excruciating pain might have already driven her to start tearing the house apart.

"Doctor? Oh, Mo Dun, I've scoured almost all the most famous hospitals."

Si Tong stood up; his towering frame was not inferior to Mo Dun's.

He clenched his fists tightly, a look of frustration in his eyes.

"This curse is terrifying; the consultation fee we pooled is already substantial, yet those quack doctors can't find any cure."

"He is a mysterious alchemist from the East, hey, remember he healed my son's leg injury?"

Mo Dun patted his shoulder and comforted him.

"We can't just watch AdaiEr being tortured to death, after all, there's always a way."

He glanced at the pale, frail Eastern person beside Charlie, and Si Tong shook his head in disappointment.

"But he looks like a child…"
