Chapter 13: System Mission
At the dining table in the backyard of the Daoist temple, Old Daoist Qingfeng and Zhao Lingyu were eating.
After finishing their meal, the two of them tidied up the table a bit. Old Daoist Qingfeng sat back down, signaled for Zhao Lingyu to sit as well, and began, "Yesterday, I had someone look into your background and your recent daily movements. Well, you're a fairly honest kid; you didn't lie to me." He glanced at Zhao Lingyu, noticed he didn't have an expression of surprise, and continued, "You should have guessed what I do. From the things that have happened to you personally, you should also know that the world has run into a bit of trouble recently; the times are changing."
"I can tell you that there are many people like you who have awakened supernatural abilities recently. Some have already been discovered, while others haven't. There are those like you who haven't done anything bad after awakening, or were discovered before they had the chance to do anything bad, and there are also some who were only discovered after they had already done something."
"Therefore, the state has recently established a department specifically to handle supernatural criminal activity and to manage those with abilities. However, because it was just established, there isn't much manpower in the department right now, so the higher-ups have asked us to recruit some people with good character from among the supernatural individuals we discover in the public to increase our numbers."
"I think you're alright, kid. How about it? Do you want to come work under me? Of course, if you don't want to come, that's fine too; I won't force you to join. It's just that the regulations for this kind of situation aren't perfect yet. For now, it's best if you continue living in the areas you usually frequent and don't run around. If you go on a long trip, it's best to report it to us to avoid getting caught up in some supernatural criminal case and being treated as a suspect."
Hearing Old Daoist Qingfeng's words, Zhao Lingyu thought for a moment, if...
"Ding, mission issued: Join the Bureau of Abnormal Incident Investigation. Upon successful joining, you will be rewarded with 3 points of Constitution and one point-based lucky draw."
... No need to think about it, I'm joining. But I can't just say I'll join; that would seem too deliberate. I have to ask a few questions first.
"Uh... what is the name of the department you're in? When there aren't any cases, what does the daily work actually consist of? And also... what about the most critical issue, the benefits..." Zhao Lingyu asked.
After Old Daoist Qingfeng listened to these questions, he went "emmm" for a while and then said, "The name of the department is the Bureau of Abnormal Incident Investigation. As for the daily work and benefits... wait for me to ask, huh."
"Damn it... you don't even understand the basics yourself, yet you want to recruit me? What the hell are you doing?"
Although Zhao Lingyu said this, he still had to join; after all, this was the system's first mission, so he had to give it some face. Besides, the reward was pretty good—3 points of Constitution would take him several days of training to earn.
Plus, just as Old Daoist Qingfeng said, the times were changing. The mutations had already begun, and who knew what kind of monsters and demons might pop up in the future? Even if he didn't go looking for trouble, he might get dragged into some incident. So... it's better to have a big tree to lean on for shade. Just like Old Daoist Qingfeng said before, no matter how tough a supernatural user is, or how amazing their ability is, can they withstand a group of people firing machine guns at them? If machine guns don't work, there are plenty of other high-powered weapons.
"Uh... I already told you it was just established not long ago. You're the very first one I've recruited from society, so it's understandable," Old Daoist Qingfeng said awkwardly.
"??? How long is 'not long ago'? So I'm the first one to eat the crab? Say, can I go back on this..." Although he had decided to join, he still felt it was a bit unreliable.
"'Not long ago' just means not long ago... it means... it was established just yesterday. As for going back on it, don't even think about it, kid. You think you can run once you're in my hands? No way!" Old Daoist Qingfeng was a bit awkward at first, but now he had returned to his old rascal appearance, looking all cocky.
"And I already told you about the function of this phone yesterday. How about it? Don't you want one? You can have one as soon as you join~"
... Why does this feel like a TV shopping commercial for a pyramid scheme... If everyone in this department is like this Old Daoist Qingfeng... it's going to go under sooner or later... Should I reconsider?
In the afternoon, the old Daoist brought Zhao Lingyu back to the downtown area of D City, preparing to handle his onboarding procedures and, by the way, to learn the way. Well, to let Zhao Lingyu learn the way, and for Old Daoist Qingfeng to learn the way himself...
