Chapter 1675: This Is a Promise
The girl before him had lost her parents and was all alone in a foreign land; it truly was not easy for her. If possible, he wanted to show this girl a little more care.
"Thank you," Xin'er said softly, lowering her head.
"Don't mention it," Chen Yu smiled. "You're being too formal. Come, let me see your situation."
"Okay." Xin'er nodded. Just as she was about to go inside with Chen Yu, a plump old woman walked over carrying a qipao.
This woman was in her forties, her body was slightly stout, and judging by her words and actions, she was likely a Fusang person.
In fact, Xin'er's shop catered mostly to Fusang customers, as many of them enjoyed the culture of these embroidered qipaos.
The fat woman clearly also loved beauty, but unfortunately, her obese frame could not fit into this beautiful qipao at all.
"Is this your clothing? The quality is poor enough as it is, and I can't even put it on." The fat woman threw the garment in her hand heavily onto the counter and said viciously, "I demand a refund now."
"Mrs. Huiming, when you bought this garment, I already told you that you might not be able to wear it," Xin'er said with some helplessness.
This old woman was very fond of qipaos, but her figure was truly too out of shape.
Even the largest size qipao was tight on her. The last time she bought one, Xin'er had already told her that her figure was not suited for this Han-style clothing, but the old woman refused to believe it and insisted on squeezing her one-hundred-and-fifty-pound frame into the qipao.
"I don't care. Don't make any excuses now; if I can't wear it, I can't wear it," the old woman roared angrily. "Now I want a refund."
"Fine, I will give you a refund." Xin'er was helpless. She picked up the garment and looked it over back and forth.
But at a glance, her expression froze, because the garment had already been stretched until it tore, and the old woman had made it all wrinkled; there was no way it could be worn again.
"That... Mrs. Huiming, I'm afraid this garment cannot be returned," Xin'er said, looking at the clothing with some helplessness. "Because it is already damaged."
"What? Damaged? You little girl, don't talk nonsense. The garment was perfectly fine when I brought it, it was you who damaged it when you took it. Don't try to pin this on me now; I won't accept it."
The old woman naturally refused to admit that she had ruined the garment. She stiffened her neck and raged, "This is because your clothing quality is not up to standard, don't make excuses."
"Mrs. Huiming, the garment was fine when you bought it, right?" Xin'er argued based on reason. "You can come to return it, but at least keep the garment intact and clean, right?"
"Look, the garment is a mess now. Even if you gave it to me, I have no way to resell it, so please try to understand."
"Understand? You're a pig, why should I understand you?" The old woman leaned her head forward and looked at Xin'er with a cold sneer. "If you don't refund it today, I will call my husband from the Market Management Office to seal your shop. Let's see how you'll live after this."
"Mrs. Huiming, you must be reasonable." Xin'er's expression changed slightly.
"I'm not going to be reasonable with you today, what can you do about it?" The old woman threatened her directly. "What, do you think you have a chance to resist? You foreign pigs."
"Let me handle this." Chen Yu could no longer stand it. He shielded Xin'er behind him and smiled. "Mrs. Huiming, is it? Your husband is in market management?"
"That's right, so what?" The old woman glanced at Chen Yu with a haughty look, appearing very arrogant.
"Nothing, but one should be reasonable in all things," Chen Yu smiled slightly. "You bought the item, and you damaged and dirtied it; that is a fact, isn't it?"
"That is not a fact, it was like this when I bought it," the old woman shrieked.
"Oh, really? This qipao wasn't cheap, right? Hmm, didn't you check if it was intact when you bought it? Would you have bought it like this?" Chen Yu said. "Please, we aren't fools, don't lower everyone's intelligence, okay?"
"Kid, are you trying to stand up for her?" The old woman looked at Chen Yu with slanted eyes and sneered, "I'm telling you, you'd better not meddle in other people's business, otherwise you'll be the one who suffers in the end."
"I certainly won't meddle in other people's business, but since this matter concerns my compatriot, I can't help but say a few words." Chen Yu grinned. "By the way, your husband is in the Market Management Office?"
"That's right, so what?" the old woman asked.
"As far as I know, you have already issued an ordinance here; the market in Chinatown is now self-governed by local residents. Your husband will either be transferred to another department or be unemployed. Am I right?"
"You..." The woman's expression changed. Yes, the ordinance had been issued in the last few days; how could she have forgotten it in a blink of an eye?
"Furthermore, even the police station here will be self-governed from now on, and everyone working inside will be Chinese. So, put away your old tricks; nobody falls for that anymore, understand?" Chen Yu said calmly.
"So what if it is? You are just a bunch of outsiders. You will refund the money today, whether you want to or not."
The old woman's sense of superiority returned. She raised her head and stared at Chen Yu.
"And if I don't?" Chen Yu asked in return.
"Heh, there's one more thing I haven't mentioned. My younger brother is with the Santai Association," the old woman threatened Chen Yu fiercely. "If you dare not to refund it, you will never have a peaceful day here again."
"Then why don't you have your brother come over?" Chen Yu almost laughed. To encounter such an old, worn-out tactic here—it was truly something else.
"If my brother comes over, you're done for, kid." The old woman picked up a pair of scissors and shrieked, "Are you going to refund it or not?"
"No refund. Do as you please," Chen Yu said.
"Fine, don't regret this." The woman looked at Chen Yu through gritted teeth, then picked up the scissors and cut into a garment.
"Hey, you..." Xin'er was startled and hurried forward to stop her, but Chen Yu blocked her from the side.
"You've been closed for a long time, so you must have quite a bit of stock piled up, right? It's fine, let her cut. Let her buy every piece she cuts," Chen Yu smiled.
"But..." Xin'er hesitated; she did not want to have a conflict with the locals.
"I'm here, so don't be afraid." Chen Yu patted her shoulder to comfort her, then quietly watched the old woman put on her show.
The old woman cut one piece, but feeling unsatisfied, she took the scissors to the other side and began to wreak havoc on another garment.
