Chapter 384: Last Night

~5 min read 815 words

The next morning, the thin sunlight finally pierced the lingering gaps in the clouds, illuminating the land that had just undergone a bloody Baptism.

Inside the side room, Bei let out a long, satisfied yawn and sat up from the straw‑covered floor.

Bei rubbed her sleepy eyes, then ran her fingers through her thick hair, feeling that this sleep had been unusually deep and comfortable, as if a thousand‑pound burden had been lifted.

Her hazy vision gradually refocused, and she instinctively looked out the window, wanting to see the scene after the rain—

In the next second, all her drowsiness was instantly shattered!

Outside, it was no longer muddy grass or a simple farmhouse, but… a field of corpses!

They lay in all directions, each in a different pose, dark‑red blood stains glaring in the morning light, and the air still seemed to retain the iron‑rust smell and aura of death that had not fully dissipated from last night.

Enemies?! An attack?!

Bei's pupils suddenly contracted, her muscles tensed instantly, and she almost instinctively let out a low growl, her voice hoarse from just waking yet full of alertness:

"Luoer! Yu Lin! Enemies! We're being…"

She sprang up from the floor, reaching for the weapon lying beside her.

"No need to worry."

A calm voice tinged with faint fatigue came from behind her, cutting off her movement and words.

Bei froze, turned quickly, and saw Luoer perched on a rickety wooden chair against the wall, holding an empty Ceramic Cup, his gaze absent as he stared toward the doorway.

He looked as if he hadn't slept all night, dark circles faintly under his eyes, his expression slightly weary, a lingering heaviness in his brows that made him seem a different person from the usually sardonic, quick‑witted Luoer.

"They…" Luoer's gaze was unfocused, his voice even:

"I killed them yesterday."

Bei opened her mouth, momentarily unsure what to say.

Last night? She only remembered drinking the sweet, cloying honey water the hostess had given her, and then… then she had slept herself to death, completely unaware of what happened outside!

"Last night… what exactly happened?" Bei steadied herself, strode to where Luoer and Yu Lin stood, pulled a wooden post aside to sit, and asked anxiously:

"Could it be the villagers… trying to harm us?"

Thinking of that honey water that had made her drowsy, she already felt an ominous premonition.

"Pretty much," Luoer nodded slightly, not surprised that she could guess.

He inhaled deeply, as if gathering his thoughts, then, in a tone as concise as possible yet unable to hide the bloodiness and cruelty, recounted roughly last night's events: La Ling drugging, Man Er tricking him out, the Village Chief leading a massacre, the bizarre Blade Aura rain and its backlash, and the final standoff and negotiation.

Bei listened, a flash of anger at being deceived and betrayed crossing her face, but soon that anger was replaced by an almost indifferent calm.

She wasn't unangry, but… she glanced at Yu Lin beside her, ever quiet, as if everything were under his control.

With Yu Lin present, these people's scheming and attack were doomed to fail from the start, even appearing laughable.

Targeting them could only be counted as the villagers' own utter misfortune.

She didn't voice that, but simply asked:

"Did you kill them… all of them?" Her gaze swept over the varied corpses outside the window.

Luoer shook his head, his voice low: "No. I wasn't that… cruel. The children weren't killed; I left that couple, letting them take their children and leave for elsewhere to live."

He paused, then added:

"As for later… hmm, I won't say more."

He seemed unwilling to delve further on the topic; after speaking, he stood, placed the empty cup on the table, his tone returning to its usual cadence, though lacking its former lightness:

"Alright, enough said. The rain has stopped, it's getting late, let's set off again."

He turned and walked toward the doorway.

"I'll go Wash my face and clear my head."

Bei watched his back, feeling that something was different from before.

Specifically what was different? The lingering heaviness between his brows? A hint of complexity and fatigue in his eyes? Or that deliberately upright back that seemed to bear an invisible weight?

She couldn't say, but felt that after last night, this companion who had always been clever, optimistic, even a bit carefree, seemed to be changing quietly.

Perhaps it has to do with Yu Lin?

Bei looked at Yu Lin and saw him also standing, giving her a slight smile:

"Watch what I'm doing? Let's go."

"I'll make some vegetable soup for you all in a bit."

Seeing him leave.

Bei could only suppress her thoughts, get up and follow out, feeling a quiet regret.

How did she fall for the trap last night?! Luoer and Yu Lin were fine..........

Sigh.
