Chapter 387: The Matchmaker?
Having eaten their fill and drunk enough, the three left the eatery amid her enthusiastic farewell.
They weren't truly aimlessly wandering; their steps unconsciously headed toward the city center.
To be precise, they were heading to the residence of Lamai, the one the girl called the "Good City Lord."
If this Lamai truly is the Lamai that Yu Lin knows as Seth's descendant and Noah's father, then his target—Noah—might be within arm's reach.
Yu Lin needs to confirm whether Noah has already been born or is still in gestation, as this affects the next step of the mission.
Luoer and Bei, on the other hand, are simply driven by intense curiosity.
On this land rife with crime, could there truly be a ruler capable of forging such a different order?
They really want to see with their own eyes what kind of person this City Lord, praised by the people as almost wise and heroic, truly is.
The three walked along the tidy streets and soon arrived near the city center.
A stone-built structure, slightly larger than ordinary homes yet far from grand, appeared before them.
It even lacked a wall; the main gate stood open, allowing a clear view of its plain interior: a few wooden chairs, a table piled with parchment rolls, a hearth smoldering with embers, and nothing more.
The doorway was empty; there were no stern guards, not even a doorkeeper.
Without prior knowledge, who could believe this is the City Lord's residence?
Compared with the lavish palace of Lamai in Enoch City, this place is as shabby as a common scholar's study, even inferior to some modestly wealthy homes.
Luoer and Bei exchanged glances, each seeing surprise in the other's eyes.
This City Lord truly seems… unlike the rest.
Yu Lin did not hesitate; he stepped toward the open gate, intending to go in and ask directly.
However, just as his foot was about to step onto the stone steps at the entrance—
"Hey, hey! You lot, what are you doing?!"
A loud voice, reproachful yet not harsh, came from behind.
The three halted and turned to look.
They saw a towering, roughly three‑meter‑tall hulking man striding rapidly toward them.
His features were rugged, yet he exuded a simple, kind demeanor; his brows furrowed slightly as he stepped quickly to block them from the doorway.
"The City Lord is on his noon break; don't disturb him!" The hulking man lowered his voice but remained full of vigor:
"If you have business, wait a while until he wakes, or… you can come early tomorrow morning as well."
"Don't you know he needs to rest at noon?"
His tone carried a hint of "that should be common sense" reproach.
Upon hearing this, Yu Lin and his companions suddenly realized and hurried to apologize.
"Sorry, truly sorry," Yu Lin said earnestly:
"We just arrived in the city today, so we indeed didn't know the City Lord's schedule. Thank you for the reminder."
Luoer and Bei also nodded.
Learning they were newcomers, the hulking man's reproach vanished, replaced by a warm smile; his palm, as broad as a Palm Fan, waved and said, "Ah! So you're new friends! That's fine, not knowing doesn't make us blame you."
He introduced himself:
"My name is Lute, I'm in charge of security for this area and also help the City Lord with miscellaneous matters."
He surveyed the three, especially Yu Lin's unusual face and Bei's towering stature, and, with a hint of expectation, asked, "Are you here to find the City Lord because you wish to join us and settle here?"
"If so, I can take you to another place to handle City Registration and arrange housing, so the City Lord need not deal with these trivial matters himself."
Yu Lin shook his head and explained, "We're only looking for a person, not to settle down."
"Lute, may I ask if you know a person named Noah?"
"Noah?" Lute repeated the name, thought carefully, then shook his head confidently, his face apologetic, "Sorry, I've never heard that name before."
"Among the registered residents of the city and the people I know, there is no one called Noah."
"However, I do know a few people named Noka or Nola; would you like me to ask them for you?"
Luoer and Bei, upon hearing this, simultaneously showed disappointment on their faces.
Another place without a clue—could Noah really be that hard to find?
Or perhaps Lamai deceived them?
He shouldn't have; he swore an oath to God, unless he truly has the nerve........
Yu Lin's expression remained unchanged; after a brief pause, he continued:
"May I boldly ask a few questions about the City Lord?"
He looked at Lute and said slowly:
"Approximately how old is the City Lord this year? Does he have a wife? Does he have children?"
Yu Lin says this because Lamai is 182 years old and has a son he named Noah.
He said, "This son will comfort us in our endeavors and the toil in our hands; this toil exists because God cursed the earth."
The matter of God's curse on the earth still ties back to Adam and Eve.
【The ground will be cursed because of you. You shall toil all your life to obtain food from the earth. The ground will sprout thorns and thistles, and you shall eat the field's vegetables. You shall sweat profusely to make a living, until you return to the soil, for you were formed from dust. You are dust, and shall return to dust.】
Because of Adam and Eve, humanity lost the natural abundance of Eden Garden.
The earth no longer readily yields abundant fruit; instead it produces useless, harmful "thorns and thistles" to resist human cultivation.
Lifetime toil also turned their way of living from the easy stewardship of Eden Garden into heavy, sweat‑soaked labor.
Perhaps this is also a reason for the widespread evil.
After all, where is planting faster than looting?
Can't beat others and don't want to farm? The wicked have plenty of ways to make you obediently plant!
Lute, upon hearing Yu Lin's somewhat personal questions, showed no suspicion, taking them as mere curiosity or goodwill from newcomers.
He scratched his short hair and answered honestly:
"Exactly how old the City Lord is this year? I really don't know; I only joined here ten years ago."
He clearly had no concept of the City Lord's age, or rather, in this era of generally long lifespans and a vague sense of time, age was not an important marker.
He continued, "But a wife? Children? Lord of the City has no wife! They've always been alone. Since there's no wife, naturally there are no children."
At that point, Lute seemed to suddenly understand something, his eyes brightened, his gaze swept over Yu Lin and the other two, finally lingering with interest on the tall, strikingly handsome Bei.
He grinned, with a hint of mischief and enthusiasm, "You ask this… could it be that you're trying to find a wife for Lord of the City?"
He kept looking and found Bei more suitable, analyzing to himself, his voice rising a few notches: "Hmm! I think it's fine! This female warrior is beautiful, and her strength appears formidable!"
"It should be possible!"
He raised his hand and patted Bei's shoulder, giving Bei an encouraging smile that said "I have confidence in you."
Bei: ".............."
