Chapter 481: Three Gifts

~7 min read 1,242 words

Mi Ti Ya, Balthasar, and Gaspar were conversing with Yuese and Mary, speaking of star‑gazing and prophecy.

They expressed their devout reverence toward this newborn "King of the Jews."

Yuese and Mary listened attentively, and the wariness on their faces gradually gave way to surprise and emotion.

But.

In another corner of the room, the atmosphere was completely different.

"Drink, milk, drink milk~ Come, another sip, ah—"

Yu Lin, at some point, had naturally taken the infant Jesus from beside Mary, holding a bottle in one hand and steadying the swaddling cloth with the other, his face full of smiles as he fed the baby in his arms.

Little Jesus stared with a pair of pure, flawless eyes, unblinking, at Yu Lin.

His gaze was filled with the infant's typical naiveté and curiosity about the world; the sucking of the nipple was instinctive, and he seemed to have no particular "thoughts" about the adult holding him.

He looked no different from any newly born, well‑fed, ordinary baby.

Hmm, he probably hasn't reached the age of understanding yet…

After feeding little Jesus, Yu Lin watched him yawn and become drowsy, and only then gently placed him back onto the bed beside Mary.

Having done that, Yu Lin seemed to suddenly remember something.

He flicked his wrist, and a mobile phone appeared in his palm.

He opened the camera app, then, adjusting the angle, aimed at the sleeping little Jesus on the bed, the gently smiling Mary beside him, and Yuese, who was attentively listening to the doctors—

He took several shots in rapid succession, even one where Yu Lin leaned in, flashing a "V" with one hand, his face pressed next to the sleeping little Jesus, showing a brilliant grin in a playful selfie.

After shooting, he satisfied himself by scrolling through the photos, then contentedly tucked the phone away.

He planned to print them when he got back and frame them in the Church.

His series of fluid actions naturally fell into the eyes of Mary, Yuese, and Mi Ti Ya, who had just finished a conversation and was watching.

They all wore bewildered expressions, completely not understanding why Yu Lin was waving that small black tablet at them and the child for so long.

Sensing their curious glances, Yu Lin looked up, gave them an innocuous smile, and casually explained, "It's nothing, no need to worry. This is my… um, "portrait tool"."

"Just a little gadget from my hometown. The child is so cute, I just wanted a few 'portraits' as a keepsake,"

He used the relatively easy‑to‑understand term "portrait".

Yuese and Mary nodded half‑understanding; although they found the "tool" rather odd, seeing Yu Lin's calm demeanor and his companions—several seemingly wise doctors—they did not press further.

Mi Ti Ya and the others were even more curious, but seeing Yu Lin unwilling to elaborate, they remained silent and turned their attention back to the conversation with Yuese and his wife.

Time passed peacefully in conversation, and the light outside the window gradually turned orange‑red.

Only when Feili's footsteps and the sound of a door opening came from outside did the talk temporarily conclude.

Mi Ti Ya glanced at the sky; the afterglow of the setting sun had begun to paint the window panes.

He nodded toward Balthasar and Gaspar.

The three rose together, each walking toward the Travel Pack they had placed in the corner.

They solemnly opened the packages, retrieving the three gifts that had been prepared beforehand.

Mi Ti Ya presented golden leaves—bright yellow, heavy, crafted into exquisite leaf shapes—symbolizing nobility and kingship.

Balthasar took out a small ivory box engraved with intricate patterns; upon opening it,

inside lay a chunk of myrrh, golden‑hued and honey‑soft in texture, symbolizing Divinity and the priestly office.

Gaspar produced a sealed black ceramic jar; breaking the wax seal released a strange aroma, bitter yet with a lingering sweet aftertaste.

It contained precious frankincense, often used for ointments and preservation, foretelling suffering and sacrifice, and also representing an eternity beyond death.

The three, holding their respective gifts, walked solemnly to the bedside and halted before the sleeping infant Jesus.

They bowed deeply and gently placed the gifts on the edge of the bed.

Speaking as the representative, Mi Ti Ya said respectfully, "Guided by light and the stars, we come from the distant East."

"We offer gold, honoring you as king; we offer myrrh, honoring you as god; we offer frankincense, foretelling your path and glory."

"May these modest gifts accompany you through the years of your growth, and may eternal wisdom and peace always be with you."

Having said that, the three bowed deeply once more.

Yuese and Mary looked at the precious, symbolically rich gifts and the three's devout actions, feeling both moved and at a loss, and repeatedly expressed their thanks.

After the ceremony, Mi Ti Ya glanced at the deepening dusk outside, turned to Yuese and Mary, and said:

"It's getting late; we won't disturb you further or affect your rest."

"Thank you again for your trust and hospitality."

He paused, then offered sincere blessings: "May your Lord—the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob—watch over and bless you, and keep this child safe and healthy as he grows."

"You as well," Yuese quickly rose, and together with Mary escorted the four of Mi Ti Ya to the doorway.

"Take care on the road, all of you."

"May peace be with you," the group replied, then turned, merging into the crowd on the Bo Li Heng streets, their figures gradually fading beneath the final glow of the sunset and the first rising stars.

Watching them depart, Feili stepped out of the house, stood beside Yuese, gazed in that direction, and asked curiously:

"Yuese, those people… are they your relatives? Or friends you knew before? They have an unusual bearing,"

Yuese shook his head and replied, "They're not relatives, they're friends… but more precisely, they should be 'worshippers'."

"Worshippers?" Feili was even more puzzled, eyebrows arched high:

"Worship whom? You? Or your wife Mary?"

He clearly hadn't considered the swaddled infant.

Yuese gave no detailed explanation, merely offering a vague smile and changing the subject:

"It's not any of those; it's worship of a… 'holy' one."

"By the way, Brother Felix, didn't you say earlier that your wife might be coming back from her parents' home today? What does she like? Thanks to you taking us in, we want to prepare a small gift to express our gratitude."

Feili indeed had his attention diverted, and upon hearing that he quickly waved his hand, his face breaking into a simple, hearty smile: "Ah, talking about gifts or not! That's too formal! We're all the same kind of people; when we're out in the world, we help each other, everyone loves each other, that's what our Lord delights in."

"You and Mary are currently in need of money; the child is still young, and there will be many expenses later. Save it to buy something good for the little one! Please don't spend it all!"

The two of them chatted idly at the doorway for a few more sentences until night fully fell and the cold set in, then they both turned and entered the house, closing the door.

The voices of conversation and the lights inside quickly cut off the night outside.
