Chapter 507: I

~5 min read 907 words

So you are the Holy Spirit.

John sat on a stone in his own simple wilderness dwelling, facing Yu Lin, who sat casually opposite the campfire, his face showing the sudden clarity of parting clouds to see the sun.

No wonder…… no wonder you can easily open the Heavenly Gate, no wonder you can appear at the sacred moment of Jesus' baptism, no wonder you act so…… unconventionally.

He could only understand it in that way.

If not, how else could one explain the scene today at the banks of the Jordan River, where heaven opened and holy light shone, fulfilling the prophecy of the Holy Spirit's descent?

Yu Lin's appearance fit perfectly into the framework of the prophecy.

However, Yu Lin simply shook his head, showing a somewhat careless smile:

I am not the Holy Spirit.

He paused, then added: "My only relation to your God is through Jesus; I have never seen God myself so far."

"Ah?" John's mouth opened wide, his brows knit tightly, full of confusion:

"Why…… why, at today's baptism, does the 'Holy Spirit's descent' spoken of in the prophecy manifest as you? Heaven opened, light fell—clearly it is……

Yu Lin shrugged, cutting off his anguish:

"Didn't the prophecy also say the Holy Spirit would descend as a dove? Did you see a dove today?"

"Not even a feather, right?"

"All right, John, from my appearance—or rather, from my involvement in Jesus' affairs—stop clinging so tightly to those specific prophetic words."

"The prophecy may point to the endpoint, but the road to it might not be unique, and the scenery along the way could differ from what the prophets imagined."

Having said that, he changed the subject: "I ask you, do you practice divination? Star‑reading, dream interpretation, and so on?"

Although John was still lost in the confusion of 'Holy Spirit or not,' hearing his familiar field, he instinctively nodded:

"A little, mainly using Holy Scripture and revelation to carry out divination and interpret omens."

"This is part of the prophets' tradition."

"Very good." Yu Lin clapped his hands:

"Then you try divining me now, using your best method, to see what you can discern about me."

John froze, not understanding why Yu Lin suddenly made this request.

But he was indeed curious about Yu Lin's origin and nature.

After a moment's hesitation, he nodded: "……All right."

He rose, took from a well‑preserved leather bag in the corner a dark stone slab, smooth‑polished and engraved with ancient Hebrew scriptures.

This was no ordinary slab, but a holy‑scripture tablet inscribed with the Holy Scripture.

John placed it on a flat stone platform, then knelt before it, closed his eyes, focused, and began to whisper the prayer.

As he chanted, the script on the slab faintly glowed, as if activated by an invisible force; the spiritual energy in the air trembled slightly and gathered toward the slab.

John concentrated fully, pouring his thoughts and doubts into the divination.

However, just as the light from the script was about to stabilize, seemingly about to reveal some vague image or symbol——

Whoosh!

Without warning, the holy‑scripture tablet bearing spiritual power suddenly burst into a cluster of blazing white flame on its surface!

The flame was not lit from outside; it erupted from within the slab itself, from the glowing script.

"What?!" John flung his eyes open, terrified.

He had no time to react; he could only watch as the flame instantly spread over the whole slab, consuming it completely.

The sturdy slab emitted faint cracking sounds in the strange fire, quickly turning black and crumbling, finally becoming a small pile of still‑warm ashes scattered on the platform.

Not a trace of intact writing remained.

"I…… my Holy Scripture!"

John was struck as if by lightning, his face turned pale, his outstretched hand froze mid‑air, his voice trembling, full of heartfelt sorrow.

This was not merely a precious object; it was also a medium bearing tradition and sacred significance!

Yu Lin stood nearby, witnessing the whole process; instead of being surprised, he broke into a smile that said 'as expected.'

"See?" he spread his hands, tone light:

"I said it—prophecy, divination, these sorts of things are useless against me."

Looking at John's anguished expression, as if his heart were dripping blood, he patted his shoulder: "Come on, come on, don't look so woebegone—I'll give you another piece."

Hearing that, John reluctantly lifted his head from grief and asked doubtfully:

"Do…… you also have Holy Scripture?"

"I don't, but I have plenty." Yu Lin answered bluntly, then, while John stared in surprise again, he rose and walked straight out of the crude stone hut.

Regarding his left‑brain‑right‑brain‑conflicting words.

John didn't understand, so he could only get up and follow him out.

Jesus simply sat in a chair, quietly watching them and listening to their words.

All that was seen was Yu Lin casually scanning the open ground outside, bending to pick up an ordinary gray stone slab from the earth.

Then, under John's gaze, Yu Lin extended his index finger and casually scratched a few marks on the rough slab's surface, leaving some phrases suitable for divination.

Having done that, Yu Lin casually slipped the stone slab he had just picked up into John's arms.

"Here, the Holy Scripture you wanted."

John: "…………"

If you want to see what Yu Lin goes on to do, let me know—I can write a few extra chapters after the mission ends.
