Chapter 75: The Ring's Function
Vatican Holy See.
When Francis learned that the Demon that appeared was a Duke-level Demon, and that Yu Lin himself entered the scene to answer AiHuade's request.
He was completely bewildered.
"Duke-level?"
"Hell's Gate has been opened?"
Francis paced back and forth, his furrowed brows showing his heavy thoughts.
Living people cannot casually go to Hell, and Demons inside Hell cannot casually come to the Human World, because a great gate blocks between the two realms.
Heaven is the same.
Originally the Holy See could summon angels from Heaven to aid them, because they possessed a Heavenly Bestowed Artifact—Heaven's Gate.
But during the earlier Crusades, they never succeeded, and even that Heavenly Bestowed Artifact was lost, now sealed by the Da Xia Civil Affairs Bureau.
No matter what conditions they offered, the Civil Affairs Bureau would not budge, leaving them very helpless.
Especially now that the Saints are all their people... this leaves them with even less excuse to retrieve Heaven's Gate!
Helpless, oh helpless!
Forget it, now is not the time to think about this.
Francis shook his head and took a communication device from his chest:
"Hello."
"Your Majesty, what orders do you have?"
"Just now the Saint dealt with a Duke-level Demon, and the seal of Hell's Gate loosened?"
"What?! I'm going to check right now............. Reply, Your Majesty, there is none; it remains as before. I guess perhaps a King-level Demon acted? Or... perhaps Satan is restless again?"
"Possible. Since it hasn't loosened, continue to guard it, and report immediately if anything happens."
"Understood."
The communication ended.
Francis recalled that the Civil Affairs Bureau had assigned a Grand Void protection for Yu Lin, and as he was about to call the Director of Civil Affairs Bureau for inquiry, the Director's call came first:
"Francis, Satan has appeared, do you know?"
"Yes, I know, because the seal of Hell's Gate hasn't loosened; the only ones who can ignore the gate and emerge are King-level Demons, and him."
"Good that you know. He is coming to recruit Yu Lin as his Apostle; I doubt he'll be satisfied, so I need you to guarantee that when Yu Lin goes wherever you send him, all protective measures must be in place, understand?"
The Director's tone made Francis uncomfortable, but he had no choice but to nod and say:
"Rest assured, I worry about the Saints' safety even more than you do."
"From now on, call me Saint Yu Lin; do not address the Saints by title directly, it is a grave disrespect."
"Hahaha," the Director's hearty laugh came from that side:
"I'm not of your Christianity, I have no authority over you."
"Alright, that's that."
"Hmm, also, the Heavenly Bestowed Artifact in Shennongjia, I suggest you don't come for it."
"Be careful not to be mistakenly harmed by us."
"......... What conspiracy are you plotting again?" Francis wondered.
The Director said no more, leaving only one sentence:
"You'll find out later, hang up."
The call was hung up.
This fellow who deserves heavenly retribution, someday I will tie you to a wooden stake and punish you fiercely with thunder!
Although harsh in tone, the words held little hostility.
It shows that he and the Director are old acquaintances.
Francis stood in place, his gaze through the window toward the Starry Sky outside, his eyes deep.
After a long while, he finally turned and left, went to his study, and began writing something.
Civil Affairs Bureau.
In the dormitory.
"Hey kid, where did you go?"
Dragon Lord, while playing a game, asked Yu Lin, who had just been sent back by Ling Dongxuan.
"Nothing much, I answered the believers' request, just went to kill a Demon." Yu Lin lay on the sofa, as if recalling something, then suddenly asked:
"Dragon Lord, do you know Lucifer? The one now called Satan."
"Hmm?" Dragon Lord, using his claw to control the keyboard with his mind, turned back at him, frowning:
"Did you see him?"
"Yes, he wants me to be his Apostle."
"Better not. It's best to stay out of affairs between deities; we have always kept separate from them, each to our own, unless truly forced by some matter to meet, otherwise we have no involvement. Of course, you kid is an exception because you can go to various Time Points."
"I know, so I didn't agree; he only gave me a ring, see what it's for."
Yu Lin took the ring out of his pocket and tossed it to Dragon Lord.
The ring seemed to have some property; it could not be stored in inventory.
Dragon Lord took it, examined it carefully, then tossed the ring back:
"Nothing much, looks like he really wants to recruit you."
"Inside it is half Angelic power and half Demonic power, likely injected by him himself; you wear it, absorb a bit, and spar with that Grand Void outside for half an hour is no problem."
"Also, with this you can enter Hell at any time."
Of course. Our Underworld is off‑limits to you; you need permission from the Yama kings or the Great Emperor.
That's all it does. All right, if there's nothing else, go to sleep.
It waves its claws, turns around, and dives back into the game.
Yu Lin simply picks up the ring and watches.
"Angel power and Demon power?"
Because there are so many myth versions, they're a mess, and some settings even contradict each other; after years of development, a slew of sects have sprouted. If you don't accept me, I don't accept you, so… those who get it, get it.
Some works were once considered canonical, only to be labeled apocrypha years later; originally just folk novels, but because they spread so widely, many were later incorporated into myth series.
For example, Lucifer's case is actually similar to Sun Wukong's; he can be seen as a character later created based on earlier material (starting in the fifth century, Christian literature began to refer to Lucifer (Lucifer, whose Latin literal meaning is light‑bearer or Morning Star) as a Demon. This usage originates from Isaiah 14:3‑20, where the name describes the king of Babylon, who was overly proud and claimed divinity before falling from heaven.)
Subsequent binding with Satan also evolved gradually.
So, for convenience in adaptation and plotting, I, the author, only pick certain version settings to write, or add some of my own settings, haha.
For instance, Heavenly Authority is just my reinterpretation of God granting the king a scepter, the Prophet's Prophecy ability, and the angel's combat Authority; "Destiny" bestows legitimacy on a ruler's reign, or an immortal wields a Heavenly Book and a magical artifact to act on behalf of Heaven; Zeus allocates the Gods' jurisdictions. These settings are merely swapped into something that can self‑awaken, called Heavenly Grant.
Everyone just enjoys it for fun; it's a light novel, we're not doing academic research. Knowing this story is enough; if you want to dig deeper, you can read the original.
Purely fictional; any resemblance is purely coincidental.
