Chapter 36: Trench, the Parapet Is Too High!

~6 min read 1,061 words

Hmph—, hmph—.

Outside the whole Chanda, dust was swirling.

A large group of shirtless soldiers were digging soil.

There was also a group of soldiers moving forward while dragging a wooden crate.

Jiang Anguo had one side of the soldiers dig Trench, while the other half conducted Infantry‑Tank Coordination training.

All personnel rotate every day.

The Trench dug today is filled in tomorrow, and the next squad continues digging Trench.

"Mìlóng, look at your position; this Trench is so low, are your butts meant for the Little Devil to shoot? Dig another half‑meter down, or was yesterday's lesson wasted?"

As a prosecutor, Jiang Anguo inspected each Trench and every position one by one.

This round of Trench digging work is still organized by Squad; after a couple of days, once the Platoon Company Commander is selected, the Trench training can be upgraded.

"Zhang Quan, what are you doing? I told you to dig a Circular Fortification, yet you're making a Single Line Long Snake Formation. Even if your Squad has only ten men, you still have to dig a circle. Understand?" Jiang Anguo shouted.

"Yes, sir."

A Single‑line Trench is actually the easiest to breach; if the enemy breaks through one point and the defending troops are weak‑willed, the entire Defensive Line collapses.

Jiang Anguo was teaching about Circular Fortifications, which connect the whole position together. Since he is only a Reinforced Camp commander, he considers operations at the smallest unit level, not Squad‑level combat. This one Squad, thrown into the Myanmar War, faces the Japanese Army directly and is of no use at all.

Therefore it must be organized by Platoon and Company. One Platoon has 40 men, one Company 160. Not only can they fully hold off the Japanese Army, at least they can defend for a while; with ten such Companies, Jiang Anguo could actually grapple with a Japanese regiment.

"I told you, each small group should be three to five meters apart. Why are you spacing so far apart!" Jiang Anguo said, referring to the small groups, i. e., Squad groups.

A ten‑person position, even if it were a Circular fortification, would still be useless; the manpower is simply too small.

But a Platoon has about four Squads, i. e., four Circular fortifications; equipped with three to five machine guns, the firepower against the enemy would be huge.

Thus the distance between positions can be a bit farther.

After all, a Squad is only ten men; spacing too far makes command difficult.

If a Platoon is cramped into a single Circular fortification, a single enemy shell would likely wipe everyone out.

"Where are the machine‑gun positions, Guan Qiang? I told you each Squad will be equipped with a machine gun; what kind of fortification are you building?" Jiang Anguo shouted.

Indeed, Jiang Anguo will equip each Squad with an MG42 rifle.

The system provides a Reinforced Camp's weaponry; equipping MG42s is more than enough. Jiang Anguo indeed has ten Companies of troops, which also include a Transport Company, a Medical Team, Artillery and other Companies.

"No one slacks off; the Trench is your second life. The enemy won't give you a second chance. Building Trench is something every one of you must learn."

Jiang Anguo, holding a microphone, inspected each Squad.

Lin Yi had already been sent by Jiang Anguo to dig Trench; Lin Yi no longer cared about his hair. Everyone was shirtless, swinging their Iron Shovels vigorously.

The winning Trench‑digging team was a Squad led by Xu Ming, a 27‑year‑old Chongqing native who had fought in the Battle of Wuhan and the Battle of Changsha.

The victorious small group will receive three Canned Beef, and not only for the Trench side; the winning Squad on the tank‑coordination side will also get the corresponding reward.

Thus no one complained of hardship; for the Canned Beef, everyone gave it their all.

During breaks, Jiang Anguo walked among the Squads; in fact, he no longer needed to select leaders, as each Squad had already chosen its own Squad Leader.

He compiled some of the troops' excellent suggestions, after all they were veterans who knew how to dodge shells better than Jiang Anguo.

Jiang Anguo also pondered the best way to arrange positions.

If the front is a thousand meters, Jiang Anguo believes a single Company's forces can temporarily slow the enemy's advance; but at two thousand meters, one Company is insufficient.

The only solution is to set up two, even three, Defensive Lines, retreating layer by layer to block the enemy's attack.

Jiang Anguo also continuously trained with everyone; he wants to integrate into the whole unit to earn their trust.

On March 8, Jiang Anguo's points had already accumulated.

Of course, those points have already been deducted for Jiang Anguo's daily consumption; there's no current combat need, so the points remain frugal.

If he exchanges for Basic Infantry, he could obtain 1,200 infantry, but it's not urgent; he doesn't need that many troops now, and more soldiers mean more consumption.

Myanmar is just a small town with no income or output; sustaining so many soldiers is not easy.

With these points, he can only exchange for 120,000 bullets; after this battle, that's all—each person gets 75 rounds, and buying artillery shells would be even less feasible.

"System, can you upgrade? You see, my points aren't enough!" Jiang Anguo was truly worried.

He worried about insufficient firepower, and also about lacking points; even though points increase daily, the unease before war's arrival remains.

The system's voice came, "Host, you may use 10,000 points to upgrade; the system will advance to Level 2. Do you choose to upgrade?"

Sure enough, it can be upgraded, Jiang Anguo said joyfully.

"System, after upgrading, what changes on your side?" Jiang Anguo asked anxiously; otherwise spending 10,000 points with no effect would be wasted.

"Host, all item prices in the system are halved," the system replied.

Halved prices are a good thing. "Then upgrade immediately," he said.

In less than a second, the system upgraded; Jiang Anguo checked the prices and saw the change: 1 point now exchanges for 20 bullets, and food purchases rose from 50 to 100 pounds.

This was huge news for Jiang Anguo; his combat endurance increased significantly.

The only thing that still unsettled Jiang Anguo was that only his own soldiers could generate points; troops from other units could not.
