Chapter 110: Pegasus and the Ogre Mercenaries

~7 min read 1,235 words

"Price? You fatties only ever know how to talk about that! Isn't having a fight and having things to loot enough? Waaagh! Waaagh!" This Night Goblin leader seemed to have just crawled out of the dirt, and his brain wasn't working very well.

"Get that big-nosed ugly thing away from my face! My, my smartest boss told me he's willing to pay you five hundred gold!"

"Five hundred? Not enough! Not enough! Dwarf meat tastes all earthy, and they're old and tough on the teeth! Iron-Head Ahetanmu doesn't like eating them!" the Ogre leader shouted.

"Eating Dwarfs gives you indigestion!"

"I don't like it either!"

The other Ogres started shouting too, and Sinuoli felt the Anvil Guard behind him tighten their grip on their weapons, standing on the verge of an outburst.

"Hahaha, warriors from afar who believe in the Great Maw! Look over here, I have a more generous offer!" Sinuoli walked out of the thicket where he had been hiding, under the protection of the Anvil Guard.

"Short-stacks! How could they be here! In front of..." The Night Goblin was greatly shocked and started squawking.

"Good! Good! Iron-Head Ahetanmu likes competition! This way he'll earn more and eat more!" The Ogre leader sat on the ground and slapped his gut-plate.

"What do you say, Dwarf? How much are you willing to pay me and my boys?"

"Five hundred, also five hundred! Don't be in such a rush, warrior, just hear me out!" Sinuoli offered the same price, and seeing the Ogre leader pick up the weapon on the ground, Sinuoli hurriedly reached out to soothe him.

"Are you making a joke of Iron-Head Ahetanmu? Five hundred and five hundred, hmph!" The Ogre pointed his massive hammer at Sinuoli from a distance.

"The price is the same, it's true, but can't a simpler job be called generous?" Sinuoli began his analysis.

"Those blackened green-dwarf-ghosts want you to go lay siege, to attack the sturdy Shanbao our Sons of the Mountains have carved out of the mountains! You'll have to advance under the fire of Artillery, Firearms, and heavy crossbows! Although you, Ahetanmu, have armor to protect you, what about your kin behind you? They only have gut-plates, after all. How many do you think will be left after one battle?"

Sinuoli threw out his question. He knew that although living in a place of bitter cold wasn't exactly wealthy, most Ogres would cover their stomachs with a piece of armor. For them, the gut-plate was vital because their most important organs were hidden behind that big belly.

The gut-plate could prevent them from being disemboweled—this was the most terrifying way to die in an Ogre's mind—but their shoulders and heads remained exposed to firepower, with only their natural thick skin providing a bit of Protection.

"And all I need you to do is swing your clubs and smash those green things that aren't much bigger than your Gnoblars!" Sinuoli saw some small green creatures hopping around the Ogres.

This group of little Greenskins was cultivated by the Ogres when they migrated from the Giant Mountains to the Mourn Mountains. Ogres generally viewed them as pests or the lowest level of slaves; if there was truly nothing else to eat, they could also serve as a light snack. Only a few Ogres would use them as things like hunting dogs.

Compared to Goblins, Gnoblars were smaller in size and possessed a nose that was exaggerated even by Goblin standards.

"Sounds good, Dwarf! Smashing those guys is indeed much easier! They can't even reach Iron-Head Ahetanmu's belly!" The Ogre leader laughed loudly.

"So, you green thing a bit bigger than a Gnoblar! Do you want to raise your price?" the Ogre asked, turning toward the Night Goblin leader.

Seeing this, Sinuoli frowned. He didn't want to get into a bidding war with Greenskins who didn't need gold! He tapped his skill panel and directly selected the Storm Hammer, targeting the Goblin leader who was thinking a few dozen paces away.

Because Sinuoli had wanted to increase his speed, he hadn't brought any long-range firepower, and the Goblin leader, having noticed this, had not taken much precaution.

"Hey! Take this hammer!" Sinuoli let out a roar and flung the Warhammer in his hand.

With a "Puff!" sound, under the skill bonus, the Night Goblin leader's head shattered on impact!

Looking at the mess of green and white on the ground, everyone present was stunned for a moment. Soon, the Ogres reacted, and they picked up their weapons and stood up.

"Return!" Sinuoli reached out and beckoned. The Master-level Throwing Rune on the Warhammer was triggered, and the hammer trembled slightly before flying back into Sinuoli's outstretched palm, even taking out two Night Goblins who had tried to collect their boss's corpse along the way.

This move stunned the Ogres before him; for these big guys, trying to understand this was a bit taxing on the brain.

"What are you still standing there for? Waiting for new mushrooms to grow out of the ground?" Sinuoli roared at the Anvil Guard, who were also in a daze.

The Anvil Guard immediately snapped out of it, and they swarmed forward, hacking the dozen or so Night Goblins who had come with the leader into a pulp.

"Dwarf, you're not bad!" Watching his initial prospective employer turn into a pile of shattered corpse-chunks in the blink of an eye, Ahetanmu frowned and opened his large mouth.

"I heard the elders of the tribe say that Greenskins are always cruel and cunning, but if you ask me, you're even more cruel than them!"

"Mercy to the enemy is cruelty to oneself, isn't it?" Sinuoli took a towel to wipe his Warhammer. The towel sparked with tiny arcs of electricity on the hammerhead, which made many of the Ogres stare wide-eyed.

"Wahahaha! You're right, Dwarf! Iron-Head Ahetanmu likes an employer like you, because you always win! That way, he and his boys have money to take and meat to eat!" The Ogre leader slapped his gut-plate and laughed very happily.

"Now then? I don't seem to have any competitors left. Five hundred gold coins—are you and your men willing to work for me?" Sinuoli swung the wiped-clean Warhammer back and forth in his hand, staring at Ahetanmu with ill intent while recharging the Rune he had just triggered.

The Ogre leader felt a bit guilty too. After putting on a show of looking around, he nodded. "Looks like I can only work for you! Let's get it straight beforehand: we don't do jobs that involve throwing our lives away!"

"That goes without saying, but I must ask clearly: you haven't desecrated the corpses of my kin, have you?"

Sinuoli asked with narrowed eyes, he and the Anvil Guard behind him staring at the Ogres before them with thick, murderous intent.

If these mercenaries gave the wrong answer, then even if it meant suffering some losses, Sinuoli would definitely settle the Grudge right here!

In the traditions of the Dwarfs, the most important thing is to be laid to rest in the earth. If they were to sit by and watch their kin be picked over by Ogres after fighting heroically, such a Grudge would be enough to make every Dwarf take the Slayer Oath!
