Chapter 160: Weifengbao
Snorri Thorsson walked outside while grooming his fake beard; in truth, the formal welcome banquet had not yet taken place, so the clansmen of Weifengbao basically did not recognize him.
Especially since his story had been spread with added embellishments, his image in the minds of the clansmen now was likely similar to that of Henlide-Tulongzhe, the Gatekeeper of Jiliuguan.
If Snorri were to stop a clansman on the road now and tell him that he was the Chosen of the Goddess, Snorri, the other party would likely laugh and remark that Master Snorri was a warrior strong enough to arm-wrestle a giant,
and would incidentally suggest that he eat a few more peanuts while drinking to at least fatten himself up a bit before going out to act like a drunkard.
Princess Pamila's boudoir was also on the upper level of the fortress; Snorri reached the door after circling half the corridor.
"Knock, knock!" He looked around, and after discovering no one was there, he rapped on the door.
"Elder, who are you looking for? Her Highness the Princess does not see strangers!" A vigilant female Dwarf pulled the door open a crack; judging by her attire, Snorri determined she must be the maid of his sister-in-law.
"Just say that an old acquaintance from the Physician Guild of Karaz-a-Karak has come to visit!" Snorri rolled his eyes and reported a fake identity.
The maid nodded and pulled the door shut again, evidently having gone inside to announce him. A moment later, she invited Snorri inside.
"I am truly sorry; the news of my upcoming marriage spread along with the preparations for my dowry. There have been quite a few clansmen coming to cause trouble these days; it is thanks to the Chosen of the Goddess escorting the caravan today that they have finally restrained themselves!"
Snorri saw that this room was much like the one he had at Everpeak, both having a two-room-and-one-hall layout, with the attendant living in the small room near the door.
The female Dwarf who spoke raised her head from her desk to size Snorri up, "Who are you?" She searched her memory but did not recall any such elder in the Physician Guild.
Snorri gave a wink and stepped forward quickly; he lifted his cloak, revealing the stone plate armor emblem of his Clan on the lining of his robe.
"Oh... Lena! You go outside and keep watch; don't let anyone else in!" Princess Pamila was also a Dwarf who had seen the world; she immediately had the maid go out to stand guard.
This was indeed the case; because the Dwarf race was thinly populated, non-first-in-line royal family members usually only had one attendant, so they needed to play multiple roles, and only the eldest son could have a few more staff members.
"Sister-in-law, it's me, Snorri Thorsson!" Snorri looked around the room and took off his hood; although the female Dwarf before him had not yet officially married into the family, because he had a request of her, Snorri still addressed her directly as sister-in-law to close the distance.
"Eh?" Princess Pamila was a bit stunned; she had not expected this Chosen of the Goddess to appear before her in this form.
"I came suddenly; I hope sister-in-law will not take offense!" Snorri apologized; the act of wearing a fake beard for a disguise rarely appeared in Dwarf society, as most adult males took pride in their own great beards.
"Oh, oh, what you must want to talk about is the challenge, right!" Princess Pamila recovered and smiled; in her view, this could also be considered a form of respect from Snorri for her charm.
"Indeed, the number of young fellow clansmen coming to make things difficult for you tonight will not be small; I know that there are people from many clans living outside the Qunshan who have also come!" Pamila gestured for Snorri to sit on the chair opposite the desk.
Through previous understanding, Snorri knew that because Kalake-Zifulin did not have many mineral deposits, the number of clansmen living in the fortress was not very large.
But its true significance to the Mountain Kingdom lay in the fact that it was the economic and political center for various Dwarf settlements throughout the entire Bretonnia kingdom.
Due to various reasons, Dwarfs generally had many opinions about the Knight lords of Bretonnia, and in the struggles between the Empire of Man and the Knight Kingdom, they would generally lean toward the Humans.
But Kalake-Zifulin was an exception; facing the struggle between the two great Human powers surrounding the Grey Mountains, it had remained neutral for a thousand years. One must know that this was very rare given that the Ancient Covenant established by Sigmar and Ku'ergan-Tiexu was still in effect.
The core reason for the clansmen of Weifengbao to make a change was still that the Knight lords paid too much. These guys, who did not treat the peasants as people, collected heavy taxes from their land that made those who heard of it weep and those who saw it feel heartbroken.
And a significant proportion of the money collected turned into things indispensable to the Knights in their pursuit of military merit, honor, higher titles, and even the search for the Grail on their journeys—weapons and armor.
Dwarfs were the best blacksmiths in the entire Old World, and except for a very small number of renegades who liked the light equipment of the Wood Elves, most of this money flowed into the workshops of the Dwarfs.
The Dwarfs of Weifengbao and the Bretonnian Human world could not even handle these orders; many high-end custom products had to be produced at Everpeak, which was also the reason why the caravan had to stay in Weifengbao for the New Year.
However, the Dwarfs of Bretonnia were not as loose as their fellow clansmen in the Empire of Man; they only established their own settlements in the castles of the Dukes. This was because, unlike the wealthy self-farming peasants of the Empire of Man, the serfs of Bretonnia could not afford Dwarf products.
"Uh, indeed, of course," Snorri picked up where his sister-in-law left off.
"But in my opinion, they are not worth your worry! Your martial prowess and superb skills will surely make them convinced!" Princess Pamila poured a cup of tea for Snorri.
"Hahaha, sister-in-law, the clansmen outside don't know the inside story; it's fine to just let them spread rumors. You know my true measure, don't you?"
Snorri laughed; he recalled that when his elder brother Grom was teaching him martial arts, this princess had often watched from the side.
"Hehe! I believe you have made progress!" Princess Pamila also smiled subtly. Only then did Snorri calm down to examine the appearance of his future sister-in-law; she was a beauty by Dwarf standards—
Her figure was short and quite plump; she wore two rings on her fingers, which were squeezed so tightly that they formed a circle at the joint of every small bone, looking almost like a string of short sausages.
Her skin was smooth and taut, gleaming under the sunlight from the fortress window, and her bosom was so full that its outline could be seen even under her wide gown.
Her fresh and moist complexion was very pleasing to the eye. Her face was like a peony about to bloom, her lips appeared slightly small against the fleshy backdrop of her cheeks, and when she smiled, a row of shiny and very delicate teeth was revealed.
Added to her status as a princess of Kalake-Zifulin, one of the fewer than ten large fortresses still under the control of the Sons of the Mountains, her charm was magnified even more!
However, all of this had little effect on Snorri; his aesthetic sense still remained that of his past life and had not changed along with his change of body.
