Chapter 285: The Arrival of Immigrants

~7 min read 1,309 words

After staying for another two days, Sinuoli picked an auspicious date to set off for Quata. This stretch of road could be called the welcome boulevard of the entire Nan Shijie Bianyuan Shanmai; Master Nathan had been maintaining it ever since he took office.

Building roads in the desert requires facing unfavorable factors such as strong winds, heavy sand, complex and ever-changing surface terrain, and a lack of engineering materials and water sources. Fortunately, this distance was not long, and the natural conditions were not so harsh due to the proximity to mountains and water.

The surveyed route avoided the quicksand areas. The compacted roadbed was not only convenient for people to walk on, but more importantly, it facilitated the movement of animal-drawn carts and skeleton carts, which previously had been far too easy to get stuck in the sand.

Sinuoli first went to the pyramid of Tutankhamun III. This Priest King was a brilliant ruler in history. During his lifetime, he had pitted his wits against tomb raiders coveting the burial treasures in Coffin Canyon, and he continued to do so after being awakened.

Looking at that ornate skeleton, Sinuoli felt a certain amount of sympathy; perhaps immortality in such a manner was not as good as sleeping forever! He presented a batch of Dwarf jewelry and some Zhendan handicrafts he had just acquired, logically obtaining the authority to expand the port.

"My King, this is our lifeline!" Gotrek's voice rang out as he looked at the busy port before them. Sinuoli's emphasis made this young powerhouse very satisfied; it was always a good thing to meet a mentor who recognized one's talent right after starting out.

The Leviathan Butcher Rogov had not been able to last many rounds against Gotrek in their sparring match, and Sinuoli was not at all surprised by this result. He directly appointed Gotrek as the deputy captain of his personal guard, roughly the position Captain Gelunsen previously held in the Eternal Hammer Guard.

"But if I may speak frankly, we cannot rely solely on this one line, especially since the part we control is not that much!"

The young man was powerful, but he was no brute; otherwise, he would not have embarked on the path of an Engineer and produced so many outrageous designs.

"You are quite right. Continue, do you have any suggestions for improvement?" Sinuoli took the opportunity to inspire him.

"Open up the trade route to Araby, or clear the way to Tiefengbao!" Gotrek gave his answer after a brief thought. In fact, those were the only two options for wanting to go to the Old World.

"Then which one do you say is easier to handle?" Sinuoli asked next.

"Hmm, if you ask me, it's better to go to Karak-Azgal. The route is already there, isn't it?" Gotrek tapped the Runic Plate Armor on his body; this fine piece from Tiefengbao would cost dozens of Oath Gold on the market.

"Each has its pros and cons. Every caravan from Tiefengbao to Eternal Peak suffers heavy losses. It is completely different for warriors to fight their way back and forth through the Badlands versus protecting a cartload of goods on a round trip."

Sinuoli muttered; he had been keeping this problem on his mind. In that famous work from his past life, Commander Liu had "three legs"; if one "thigh" broke, it wouldn't cause a major disaster. If he, Sinuoli, relied on only one leg to hop along, it would be far too unsafe.

"Do you plan to recover the Badlands? Those Orc Big 'Uns are tough! You must let me be the vanguard!" Gotrek shouted, currently thirsting for an opportunity to achieve merit.

"I will, there will be such a day." Sinuoli murmured while looking into the distance. Soon, a fleet of sailing ships appeared on the western horizon.

"Let me see!" The Dwarf King took the telescope. He saw the family crest painted on the lead ship's sail: a golden Mannan'en trident on a blue background, supporting a crown above it.

"Our friend has come in person." Sinuoli said, looking at the crest. This was the mark of the Duke of Bordeleaux. He actually wanted to equip Kangsitanting, his most important Human ally, with a Communication Rune, but the Doom Anvil really had no resources to spare.

"Prepare to fire the salute, welcome these friends from the Knight Kingdom!" Sinuoli turned back and announced.

Firing a salute is a ceremony originating from the navy. When a warship enters a foreign port, it discharges all ammunition from its cannons to show it has no hostile intent, after which it is permitted to enter the port to dock or pass through.

This practice gradually developed into both a friendly act of disarming oneself and a gesture of paying tribute to the other party. In addition to the warships firing, the port should also fire a salute in return.

"Bang! Bang! Bang!"

The sound of the Cannon rang out, one after another.

"Flap, flap!"

A flock of skeleton vultures perched on top of the pyramid was startled and flew up.

"Welcome to your arrival, Knights of Bretonnia! The Nan Shijie Bianyuan Shanmai will become your new home!" Watching the fleet dock and the large crowd of Humans pouring off, Sinuoli said loudly.

"It's been a few years. Who would have thought that in such a short time, we would both become sovereigns?"

Kangsitanting was the first to step forward. Time seemed to have left few traces on this Duke who had received divine grace. He looked just as young, but his temperament had shifted from the initial defiance of a sailor to the composure of a superior.

"The Chaos in the shadows is constantly expanding, and this world is facing a huge threat. How could we stand still?" Sinuoli shook his head. In the current Mortal World, no one could yet understand his worries about the End Times.

"We initially thought the matter of migrating the population was simple, but I didn't expect you to have such great energy and such a precise grasp of timing." Kangsitanting praised; Sinuoli's performance exceeded his expectations.

"His Majesty Chalun cleared out the Greenskins, which reduced the defensive pressure on the various duchies for a period of time; otherwise, they really wouldn't have dared to let the population flow out. Coupled with the oracle of the Lady of the Lake, I really don't know how you did it!"

"Hahaha, this is a mutually beneficial matter to begin with. This is not the place to talk; let the immigrants disembark and rest. There is still a long way to go!"

Under the urging of the Knight lords and their squires, groups of farmers dragging their families and carrying labor tools poured out of the ship's cabins. Sinuoli could smell a strange odor from afar; these poor people had suffered a lot during the long voyage. For many, this was their first time on a ship, and such a long voyage was undoubtedly a torture.

"Notify logistics, get them some meat!" Sinuoli shook his head. He knew these problems shouldn't be his concern, but since they had arrived in the Southlands, he had to fulfill the duties of a host. Ever since the incident with Nagash, the natural resources had not been developed for thousands of years; there was plenty of game to be had.

The farmers cleaned themselves up simply by the river, and the first batch of Knights rode their horses to Sinuoli and Kangsitanting's side.

"This batch has a total of thirteen Knights. By standard, each of them brought three hundred people, including farmers and soldiers!" Kangsitanting introduced them one by one. Three hundred people was roughly the population of a small village at the current stage.

"You are all people of ambition and insight. I believe we will cooperate very well!"
