Chapter 59: Engineer Guild
Having finally finished their meal, Sinuoli and Buluoke squeezed out of the canteen. Buluoke invited Sinuoli onto his vehicle—a small four-wheeled cart with a front-mounted engine.
Sitting on the leather seat, feeling the vibration of the car engine and the rhythmic jolting as the wheels passed over the uneven stone road, Sinuoli was almost lost in memories of his past life.
The two drove all the way to the hall of the Engineer Guild. Although it was not far from the canteen and they had a vehicle, it still took them nearly an hour.
Buluoke, the head of the Engineer Guild, abandoned his usual aloof style; every time he met a fellow Dwarf he knew on the road, he would stop the car to recount last night's story.
It seemed that with Sinuoli, the Chosen of the Goddess, sitting beside him as a witness, his enthusiasm for spreading the grace of the Mother Goddess had grown even higher.
Having finally arrived at the entrance of the guild, Sinuoli found that it was indeed a base for emerging technology; the structure of the main gate was different from any gate he had seen before.
Unlike ordinary stone or steel gates that required several guards to work together to open or close, this gate could be opened and closed with one hand by driving a built-in pulley system via a lever next to the door.
The guards in front of the gate were not holding Battle Axes or hammers, but Firearm.
However, the statues on both sides of the gate were still in the standard Dwarf style: one was the God of Engineers Mogelimu, and the other was Moerjin, the inventor of explosives and the founder of the Engineer Guild.
All the way inside, every Engineer along the way greeted Sinuoli enthusiastically; thanks to the grace of the Goddess, he was probably the first Rune User to receive such treatment since the completion of Jiliuguan.
On the periphery of the hall were the lower-end, basic weapon production lines. The Dwarfs working here were generally young, and in the industry of Engineering, which required a lot of knowledge accumulation in addition to creative inspiration, they could only be considered beginners.
The ballistae, Grudge Thrower, and Thunder Gun produced here were mostly sold to other Karaks; with Sinuoli's superficial knowledge of Engineering, he couldn't see anything particularly special about them.
Continuing inward, passing through two small doors guarded by sentries, Sinuoli, led by Buluoke, entered a slightly smaller workshop.
On the assembly line here were Cannon and Iron-drake Handgun; these two weapons could be called essentials even in the more open Dwarf Karaks.
Among them, the Iron-drake Handgun was good at dealing with underground threats and sweeping away large numbers of low-level opponents, while the Cannon was currently the most commonly used Artillery in the Dwarf army, bar none.
They could easily shatter enemy armor and were very effective against those heavily armored enemies.
They also possessed considerable precision and destructive power, capable of causing huge damage to large monsters that melee troops found difficult to handle.
Of course, they could also be used to attack enemy castles and fortifications, and inflicting damage on ordinary living forces was naturally not a problem.
Precisely because of the versatility and low price of the Cannon, they would be towed by horses to accompany the army when it set out on an expedition.
After Buluoke briefly introduced the projects they were currently researching—improving the loading speed of the Cannon and increasing the range of the Iron-drake Handgun—he led Sinuoli deeper into the guild.
According to Buluoke, the really interesting stuff was yet to come!
The two walked further in, and this time the guards at the gate at the end of the corridor were clearly much more heavily armed. Several Irondrake watched the arrivals vigilantly, and Buluoke entered a string of codes to successfully open the gate.
The hall inside this gate was significantly smaller. There were almost no young or middle-aged Dwarfs working inside. "These are all official Engineers!" Buluoke introduced.
A type of small Artillery currently in production caught Sinuoli's attention. This four-barreled Artillery was called an Organ Gun because the four barrels placed side by side looked like a pipe organ.
The barrels of the Organ Gun appeared smaller and more portable compared to the barrels of ordinary Cannon, which meant that the Organ Gun did not have the extreme range and powerful firepower of the Cannon,
but the Organ Gun could fire a continuous series of deadly shells at the same time, which could cause huge damage to large groups of lightly armored enemies gathered together.
Looking at such a weapon of slaughter, Sinuoli nodded repeatedly; it was perfect for dealing with Goblin and rats, and because it was relatively portable, it could also be towed underground.
Behind the Organ Gun were several Dwarf Helicopter in various stages of assembly.
"Almost every Dwarf who can come here will express admiration for these little cuties! It is technology that has given wings to us Sons of the Mountains!" Buluoke said proudly.
"Of course, except for you. The wise High King Thorgrim is our biggest customer! It is his generosity and open-mindedness that have promoted the development of our aviation industry."
"Yes, I saw a whole squadron of Helicopter at the tarmac in Karaz-a-Karak!" Sinuoli replied.
"These are for Karak-Kadrin! Praise the Slayer King! His wisdom and his martial prowess are equally extraordinary!" Buluoke did not spare his praise for the big patron.
Walking around these Helicopter to observe them carefully, Sinuoli found that they were different from the military helicopters in his memories of his past life.
It must be to have a certain resistance against the flying behemoths led by various Dragon and powerful magic in this world, so these Helicopter were all fitted with heavy armor.
To balance the extra weight brought by the thick armor, the Engineers had to make adjustments to reduce the onboard weapons and shrink the cockpit space.
After getting Buluoke's permission, Sinuoli sat in the cockpit and felt it briefly. He found that the narrow cockpit was slightly spacious for one Dwarf, but it would be quite difficult to squeeze two in.
"No wonder the pilots of Everpeak complain about needing to lose weight every day!" Sinuoli recalled those clansmen who looked cool but kept grumbling, and he suddenly realized.
"Guild Master Buluoke, I'm afraid such a design can only serve for reconnaissance, right?" Sinuoli spoke after a brief experience. Such a Helicopter made him a little disappointed; they were still far from achieving the roles of aerial strikes, supply drops, and troop transfers that Sinuoli had envisioned.
"As expected of the Chosen of the Goddess! You really are an expert!" Buluoke looked at Sinuoli as if he had met a kindred spirit.
For other Dwarf lords, those who could realize the role of the Helicopter could already be called open-minded, and only Sinuoli, relying on the memories of his past life, could expand his thinking and foresee the greater development prospects of air power.
"According to custom, we should turn back here. But since you've asked, let's walk a bit further! You are the Chosen of the Ancestor Goddess, so making an exception shouldn't matter!" Buluoke looked proud.
