Chapter 89: Lailun Buys a Gun
"Don't rush, I'm coming!" A muffled voice rang out. The owner of the voice pulled open the room door, and Sinuoli was surprised to find two hairy legs appearing before his eyes!
"An Ogre!?" Sinuoli looked up and saw a sturdy fellow over three meters tall; Sinuoli and his clansmen would barely reach his knees even on tiptoes.
"What's all the fuss about? Little Beard, hmph, Bazake who can drink doesn't eat Dwarfs; your meat is too tough!"
Sinuoli knew of the Ogre race; they were also created by the Old Ones. The Old Ones first created the Lizardmen to help them set up their development environment, but the Lizardmen had no reproductive ability and were more like biochemical robots than living beings.
The next race the Old Ones created was the Elves, but the Elves reproduced too slowly and their bodies were too weak to survive long-term wars. Then came the Dwarfs, but they could not use magic and were too stubborn and rigid to adapt to the schemes of Daemons in time. After that, they created Humans, but Humans were too easily corrupted.
Finally, they manufactured the Ogres. These burly fellows seemed to possess all the functions the Old Ones wanted:
They were as adaptable as Humans, reproduced quickly, could survive in the harshest environments, were resistant to Chaos corruption, had long lifespans, were quite intelligent, could utilize machinery and technology, and could eat almost anything, making them easy to keep. But their innate hunger was difficult to suppress.
Hunger drove them to invade Zhendan, which enraged the master of Zhendan, the Dragon Emperor. This immortal Dragon God, together with his Astromancers, dragged a massive meteorite down from space and smashed it into the center of the Ogre lands.
The massive explosion caused by this meteorite wiped out two-thirds of the entire Ogre population; the meteorite smashed directly into the earth's core, turning the Ogre lands into scorched earth.
But that wasn't all; the massive crater left by the impact was actually a living thing! The Ogres worshipped it as a deity, calling it the Great Maw, and its priests
were known as the Butcher.
The arrival of the Great Maw made the Ogres' original hunger even harder to suppress, but no matter how stupid they were, they wouldn't try to head east again; taking another hit like that planetary bombardment was no joke.
Therefore, the Ogres headed west, eventually arriving at the Mourn Mountains. After driving all the Dragon Ogres and Beastmen who originally lived in the Mourn Mountains into the Chaos Wastes, the Ogres established the so-called Ogre Kingdoms there.
As various tribes continued to expand, the Ogres learned what diplomacy was, and later some tribes finally discovered: the long-term benefits of treating those small-statured races in a friendly manner were far greater than simply eating them.
From then on, Ogre mercenaries spread across the world, as long as the price was high enough or the enemies were tasty enough. The Ogre Bazake before them had likely arrived at Haojiaobao in this manner.
"Which room?" The Ogre's voice rang out above Sinuoli's head.
"Number six! Room number six, we have a reservation," Tomi replied.
"The password?"
"River Troll Hag!"
"Go in." Saying this, the Ogre cleared a path. The four Dwarfs tightened their hoods and walked quickly into the tavern.
Sinuoli saw the hall was filled with heavy drinkers, and several flirtatious, charming maids weaving between them. Having not seen a Human female since his transmigration, Sinuoli couldn't help but stare blankly.
"It's upstairs!" Tomi said, looking back when he saw Sinuoli stop in his tracks.
"Oh, oh, oh!" Sinuoli shook his head and ran a few quick steps to catch up.
"What's so good about these bean sprouts? They aren't nearly as plump as our female kin..." Sinuoli heard the two Longbeard elders behind him start to grumble.
"My boss and I have come by appointment!" Tomi pushed open the room door and stepped aside. Sinuoli stood on ceremony, sitting directly in the seat facing the door. Tomi pulled out the chair next to him and sat down, while the two Eternal Hammers stood behind them.
Sinuoli saw four Humans opposite them as well, seated in the same arrangement as his own side. He sat directly across from the tall Knight he had seen at the auction yesterday.
"Makusi, have them bring the food!" the Knight ordered the man beside him.
"Yes, my lord!" Makusi cupped his hands in a salute and went downstairs to hurry the service.
"Please!"
"Please!"
Sinuoli and the Knight before him clinked glasses.
"You may call me Lailun, elder, I come from the Border Prince Territory!" the Knight introduced himself.
"I heard you have a batch of firearms looking for a buyer, I wonder if that is true?"
"Indeed. I was at the auction yesterday as well; I saw that you failed to win the bids several times."
The two began a round of maneuvering. Knight Lailun tried to gain the dominant position in the trade, but Sinuoli did not show weakness, pointing out Lailun's needs.
"What kind of goods do you have?" Lailun rested his chin on his hands, sizing Sinuoli up, as if trying to see through the identity and strength hidden beneath his hood.
"That depends on what you want and what you can afford! If you can pay the price, I can get things that Lord Alike can't, though looking at you, I reckon you can only afford Thunder Guns!"
Sinuoli boasted; knowing Knight Lailun's wallet wasn't bulging, he felt safe and bold in his bluffing.
"Fine, then let's talk about these Thunder Guns!" Lailun didn't continue to act tough; everyone's time was precious.
"Friend, how much for one of these guns?" Lailun asked, getting straight to the point.
"Fifty gold coins each!" Sinuoli decisively quoted a market price.
"Fifty gold coins each? Is the barrel made of star-iron or is the stock made of star-iron?" Knight Lailun began to haggle.
"Look around, where else can you find guns? These are guns from Jiliuguan; if you think it's expensive, I think it's expensive too!" Sinuoli complained.
"Bring me one!" Since he was already here, Knight Lailun decided to look at the goods first; even if he didn't buy it, it wouldn't be a wasted trip.
"Fine, how about this one?" Sinuoli took a sample gun from Tomi and passed it across the table to Lailun.
"Does this gun guarantee a bang?" Lailun asked, fiddling with the item in his hands.
"I run an arms shop; would I sell you a dud barrel?" Sinuoli's mouth curled up at the corners, and he laughed.
"I asked you, does this gun guarantee a bang?" Lailun raised his voice slightly.
"Are you deliberately looking for trouble? I'm asking you if you want it or not!" Sinuoli was provoked by Lailun's haggling style and raised his voice as well.
"If this gun bangs, I definitely want it, but what if it doesn't?" Lailun continued.
"Hey, if it doesn't bang, I'll snap it myself, satisfied?" Sinuoli said dismissively.
"Try it?"
"No problem!" Sinuoli pushed a round of ammunition over.
Only a "Bang!" was heard.
Thanks to Little Storm, Lenin Guiding the Way for the tips, Heart's Fire, and the Unseen Fading Moon ticket.
