Chapter 10: The Storm Domain Invaded by Demons!

~6 min read 1,100 words

After finishing the job, he pulled Carolyne back to her feet and looked at the beautiful maid, her face streaked with tears.

Gervas rummaged in his pocket, then tossed out a golden little trinket.

“I, Gervas, am strict about rewards and punishments—you spoke ill of your master, so you deserve punishment!”

“But you played the biggest part in capturing Yueyue, so these golden earrings are your reward!”

Carolyne was still staring dumbfounded at the exquisite pair of golden earrings.

Though light in weight, they were worth at least one gold coin—equivalent to half a year’s wages.

But before she could even smile, Gervas’s voice came again: “But today’s punishment is only partial—for the next three days, you’ll receive three slaps each day, so you’ll remember!”

Now that he had the unicorn, his original mount was no longer necessary.

Besides, the Knight-Protector Lei Meng had had no horse these past two days and had been walking on foot with the knight squires.

That was simply unacceptable.

So Gervas directly awarded his former horse to Lei Meng, and gave him his lance as well.

Instantly, Lei Meng, the knight captain, looked every bit the part.

Gervas himself wasn’t doing badly either—the unicorn, though still in its juvenile stage, was already no smaller than an ordinary horse.

Add its snowy-white fur and extraordinary grace, and mounted upon it, Gervas would have passed for nobility—if not for his slightly faded silk ceremonial robe.

Also worth noting: the unicorn was still in its juvenile stage, so it could not yet fly.

This disappointed Gervas slightly, but he knew time was on his side—he wasn’t in a hurry.

The Storm Domain was now only three li away, and three li was very close indeed.

After crossing a small hill, the land ahead opened up into a vast, flat expanse.

But before Gervas could admire his domain, the scene ahead forced him to act quickly!

“Look—why is there black smoke rising over there?”

On Storm Domain land stood a small town of modest size.

Now, smoke filled the town’s interior and perimeter as humans and demons fought fiercely.

But the humans were clearly no match for the demons.

The wooden defensive wall had been breached, and the fire of battle had spread into the town itself.

The situation was dire.

“So this is the demon invasion mentioned in the intelligence?!”

Gervas didn’t hesitate—he didn’t want his town destroyed before he’d even taken office.

“Everyone, get on the wagons—hurry forward!”

“Also, Lei Meng, knight squires—check your weapons and prepare for battle!”

“Yes, my lord!”

“Yes, Young Master Gervas!”

Lei Meng answered sharply, but the knight squires looked uneasy.

In their eyes, the battle ahead had nothing to do with them—they had no reason to risk their lives.

But since Gervas had given the order, they had no choice but to obey.

Two li still took ten minutes or so.

Fortunately, the wagons spared them from exhaustion.

When they were less than five hundred meters from the town, a fleeing group came rushing toward them.

Over a hundred people, some on wagons, some escorted by guards.

Gervas paid no mind, assuming they were town guards escorting civilians to safety.

The two groups passed each other; Gervas turned his carriage around and stopped a hundred meters from the town gate.

“Thomas, wait here while Carolyne and Lilia hide—everyone else, follow me!”

Drawing his waist sword, Gervas called to Lei Meng and the knight squires, then charged straight into the battlefield.

Though life in Gail Domain had been tight, he’d still trained every morning.

He studied writing with the steward and combat skills with the knight captain—this was the only perk a younger son of a minor noble had.

The original owner had average aptitude, but years of practice had laid a solid foundation.

Gervas, having crossed over half a year ago, knew well the importance of martial power in this world, so he trained harder—and in just six months, he rose from knight squire to qualified knight.

Thus, this kind of battle was no challenge for him—especially now that he was a Great Knight.

But Amon, fearing for his lord’s safety, immediately surged forward, overtaking Gervas by a full body length.

The five knight squires followed close behind, swords drawn.

Hrrr!

The demon serpents immediately spotted these intruders; over a dozen stationed outside the town glowed crimson-eyed, hissed, and lunged straight at Gervas and his party.

“Die!”

Seeing this, Amon unleashed his battle aura, kicked the horse’s flanks hard, leveled his lance, and shot forward like a released arrow.

Plop! Plop! Plop!

Aaoo! Aaoo! Aaoo!

Lei Meng truly proved himself a Bronze Knight—before the vicious demon serpents could strike, he pierced three of them in rapid succession.

By then, Gervas and the others had arrived; they coordinated swiftly, attacking left and right against the remaining demon serpents.

In moments, all ten demon serpents lay dead.

No time to rest—Gervas shouted: “Lei Meng, into the town!”

“Yes, Young Master Gervas!”

Then the group rushed toward the wall, charging through the breach into the town.

Inside, screams and clashes echoed everywhere; corpses littered the streets—both demon serpents and human warriors.

Soon, Gervas’s party spotted a stone house at the town’s center, swarming with dozens of demon serpents.

“Head there!”

They spurred their mounts and reached the stone house in moments—over forty demon serpents had gathered there.

They were besieging the last few human warriors inside.

Those warriors were all wounded, having already lost hope.

When they saw Gervas’s group arrive, their eyes widened in shock.

“Kill!”

Without a word, Lei Meng charged ahead, his lance thrusting like a dragon’s tongue—a flash of cold light struck first.

With his battle aura amplified, the demon serpents were caught off guard.

Shouts erupted from within and around the stone house: “We’re saved! A titled knight has come to rescue us! Fight! Kill all these vile demons!”

The slaughter lasted over ten minutes; eventually, with Lei Meng’s battle aura and the townsfolk’s desperate resistance, every single demon serpent that had invaded the town lay dead.

“Thank you, knight lord, for saving us!”

With the demons slain, the town guards rushed to thank Lei Meng.

Primarily because Lei Meng was the strongest—already a transcendent titled knight—and without knowing their true identities, they naturally thanked the strongest among them.

Lei Meng remained expressionless: “Don’t thank me—I came to aid you on my lord’s orders.”

Lei Meng turned his gaze to Gervas.

The townsfolk and guards naturally turned to look at Gervas.

“My lord’s name is Gervas Gail!”

The townsfolk and guards froze—“Gervas Gail? The new lord?”
