Chapter 465: I have completed my mission!

~6 min read 1,112 words

Akari was Gervas’s first Night Elf subordinate.

After subduing her last time, Gervas took her along on his campaigns.

The reason Akari has barely appeared throughout the journey is that Night Elves are unsuitable for appearing before other nobles.

After all, such a presence is no different from displaying Moonseeker, the unicorn, directly before other nobles.

Thus, on previous legs of the journey, Akari stayed with the aerial squad, riding Gervas’s Magic Swift Hawk alongside Evlan.

Only a few days ago, at Baron Kaler’s fortress, did Akari rejoin the main force with the flight squad.

And since no risky situations requiring Akari arose during the subsequent escape, she has remained idle until now.

But soldiers are trained for years to be used in a single moment—now Gervas finally needs to deploy Akari.

Last night’s intelligence revealed that the inner camp’s main gate was unusual; it also disclosed a flaw in this royal tent palace.

That flaw was a hidden escape tunnel, secretly reserved by the Beast King as a precaution.

The only difficulty with this tunnel is that it can be opened only from within; even if someone discovers the exit from outside, they cannot reverse-open it.

Thus, under normal circumstances, any other human who obtained this information would find it useless.

But for Gervas, it is different.

He has a Night Elf.

Night Elves are the most skilled beings in this world at infiltration and assassination.

Therefore, with the exact location of the tunnel, if Akari infiltrates, locates it, and opens it, his subordinates can secretly enter through it.

“Lord Gervas, what are your orders? Do you want me to infiltrate and kill that orc leader? I can try, but I cannot guarantee success!”

“After all, assassinating in a crowded, cramped military camp is far harder than in a city or castle!” Akari, the Night Elf, spoke candidly, her demeanor carefree.

And over these past days, she had gained new insight into her newly sworn human noble.

This seemingly young human noble possessed extraordinary command abilities in war.

Not only could he always foresee enemy movements in advance, but he could precisely identify their weaknesses.

More impressive still were the subordinates he cultivated and the weapons they wielded.

“No! Akari, I don’t need you to assassinate that fellow—it’s too dangerous. I won’t risk my first Night Elf subordinate!”

“Then… what do you want me to do?” Akari felt an unexpected warmth in her chest.

After all, Night Elves live on the edge of life and death.

Even if he ordered her to assassinate the orc leader, that would be normal.

In the past, people only cared whether they completed their assigned tasks—never whether they might face danger.

“What I need you to do is simple. Through secret reports, I learned that behind the enemy’s inner camp, in the garden, there is a hidden tunnel concealed among many granaries…”

Quickly, Gervas described the tunnel’s entrance features as revealed by the system.

The tunnel entrance is hidden inside a granary shed.

Without the system’s information, it would be nearly impossible to find the true target among the dozen granaries.

“Akari, do you have confidence you can find it?”

“Lord Gervas, if your information is accurate, I won’t disappoint you!” Akari replied decisively.

Infiltration and search—these were no great challenge for her.

“Excellent! I await your good news!” Gervas relaxed.

Akari wasted no time; she bid Gervas farewell and returned directly to her own tent.

When Akari reappeared, she wore a black night suit.

Under cover of night, Akari vanished from everyone’s sight.

Neither Storm Legion soldiers nor the orcs atop the wooden wall noticed the disappearance of a Night Elf.

When Akari reappeared, she had reached the north side of the inner camp.

This was the direction of the inner camp’s rear garden.

Though not the Storm Legion’s main assault point, the orcs had not neglected its defense—they stationed many orcs there.

Akari, using the night’s cover, crawled to the base of the wooden wall.

But what followed was her true test.

For atop the wall, not only were bonfires blazing brightly, but orcs stood guard continuously.

Akari began climbing slowly.

Though barehanded, her ascent up the wooden wall was as smooth as a gecko’s.

She silently reached the top of the wall but did not immediately flip over.

Doing so would have exposed her instantly.

First, she observed the two orcs patrolling this section of the wall.

Then, timing her move precisely, she flipped her sleeve—and several bats suddenly appeared out of thin air.

Even Gervas did not know Akari had concealed these.

After releasing the bats, Akari sharply flicked her arm toward the orc guards; the bats swiftly took flight, heading straight for the two orcs on the wall.

“Damn it, where did these bats come from?”

The bats flew close to the orc guards; though they did not attack, they annoyed the two orcs, who immediately waved their arms to shoo them away.

In that instant, Akari leapt lightly over the wall, then tapped her toe once more and flew cleanly into the inner camp.

Beyond the walkway lay a drop of over ten meters.

Akari remained calm; she reached out with both hands, seized a horizontal beam supporting the walkway, and hung motionless in midair—perfectly within shadow.

After observing for a moment, confirming the positions of nearby orcs and the range of bonfire illumination, Akari moved again.

Every advance, dodge, roll, and leap was perfectly timed.

Either she moved within the orcs’ blind spots, or along the edges of bonfire shadows.

After Akari departed, the bats on the wall were driven off.

The two orcs cursed under their breath, unaware their patrol zone now had a gap.

They resumed their cross-pattern patrol of the thirty-meter wall section.

“My lord, our cannon ammunition is nearly gone—we can fire at most ten more times!”

Time passed second by second; as cannons and ballistae continued their assault, the orc guards suffered heavily.

But it was only minor suffering.

As for progress, there was none.

At this moment, the cannon team delivered bad news: the powdered scales of the Blue-Scaled Sea Beast were nearly exhausted.

Though Gervas had anticipated this, he still frowned slightly upon hearing it.

Mi Gen and the others wore expressions of concern.

“My lord, if all else fails, let’s launch a full assault now!”

With cannon cover, a full assault would still bring heavy casualties.

But it’s better than losing the cannons entirely soon.

Gervas would not agree.

After all, a full assault was the last resort.

He was about to refuse Mi Gen when a melodious voice came from behind: “Lord Gervas, I have completed my mission!”
