Chapter 72: Terrifying Sea Beast!
“Is this the sea? I never thought I, Migen, would one day stand atop the sea! It’s truly miraculous, my lord—how deep do you think it is down there?”
Migen and the other knights stared at the endless blue depths, both uneasy and fascinated.
They were especially curious about the unfathomable ocean floor.
“I don’t know the exact depth here, but the deepest parts of the ocean should be tens of thousands of meters down!”
“Tens of thousands of meters?” Migen and the others widened their eyes.
Even in the medieval era of his past life, people had very little knowledge of the ocean.
For the people of this world, it was even worse.
So the ocean depth that a six-year-old in his past life knew seemed utterly unbelievable to Migen and the others.
Of course, Gervas was judging by the ocean depth of Blue Star—it wasn’t accurate.
But this world had no sonar or remote sensing satellites, so he wasn’t worried about anyone exposing him.
“My lord, there’s a white island ahead!”
At that moment, the lookout on the mast shouted excitedly!
“Found it at last! Old Jack, head straight for that island!”
The system had told him the “Agricultural Treasure Island” lay five li off the Storm Lord’s coast, but not its exact direction.
So Gervas had ordered the Stormwind to sail north along the coastline—and finally, they’d found the “Agricultural Treasure Island.”
As the Stormwind cut through the waves, the white island the lookout had described soon came into view.
“Good heavens, that island is entirely white! How miraculous!”
“Yes, the sea is truly different—even its islands are this breathtaking.”
“My lord, can we land and take a look?”
The guards, unaware of the truth, saw the snow-white island from afar and thought it utterly beautiful.
Migen especially looked forward to his first landing.
But Gervas’s smile turned strange, barely holding back laughter. “You’re sure? I think you’ll regret wanting to land soon.”
“Why? That island is so beautiful—if you permit it, I’d be thrilled to set foot on it!” Migen was baffled.
Gervas nodded and said no more.
Ten minutes later, the island was right before them.
And Migen and the others were stunned.
“This… this…”
Due to guano corrosion, the island had little vegetation; all they could see was a vast expanse of white.
The seagulls overhead were white, and the guano piled across the island was white too.
Migen and the others stood frozen in shock.
Fraud!
This was pure deception!
From afar, it looked so beautiful; up close, it was nothing but guano.
There existed an island made entirely of guano.
Pfft!
“Hahaha!”
Knight Commander Lei Meng couldn’t help laughing, his stomach aching from it.
Knight Migen nearly broke down. “My lord, this island is cruel—it tricks people! And these seabirds are disgusting!”
“No, Migen, though this island deceived you, it’s not cruel—it’s a treasure!” Gervas finally held back his laughter.
“A treasure?” Migen stared in disbelief.
Even Knight Commander Lei Meng and the others stopped laughing.
“That’s right. The guano on this island can ensure the Storm Lord’s grain yields multiply several times over for the next ten years!”
“Uh… my lord, is that true? Can this guano really double our grain harvest?”
No one could believe it.
If anyone else had said this, they’d have started cursing.
That filthy guano could double the harvest?
Did they think they were fools?
“This guano is an excellent fertilizer—purely natural, fully fermented by nature, no need for further composting… Well, you wouldn’t understand even if I explained.”
“In short, this island will henceforth be called the ‘Agricultural Treasure Island.’ Old Jack, mark this spot—transporting guano will become one of the fleet’s missions!”
The world’s technological tree had been entirely focused on magic and qi—there was no concept of composting yet, so the idea of fertilizer was utterly new to Migen and the others.
Thus, Gervas said no more—he’d let them see the results for themselves later.
Though it was the “Agricultural Treasure Island,” Gervas had no intention of landing himself. He set his course toward the volcanic island due east, as the intelligence indicated, and ordered Old Jack to continue sailing.
As they sailed, the coastline grew ever more distant, the Stormwind plunged deeper into the ocean, until the shore vanished completely.
Just as everyone savored this unprecedented sense of freedom, a sudden transformation occurred.
Splash!
A tremendous surge of waves erupted from the ship’s port side.
“Ah, what is that!”
“Good heavens, a sea beast—it’s coming toward us!”
Looking toward the source of the noise, everyone turned pale and screamed in terror.
There, seven or eight hundred meters from the ship’s side, a massive sea beast partially rose from the water, swimming steadily.
And its direction was straight toward the vessel.
Though its full form remained hidden, the spiny, razor-sharp dorsal ridge exposed above the waves stretched at least fifty to sixty meters.
That length was twice that of the Stormwind.
“Don’t panic—we have Sea God Stone aboard. No need to fear sea beasts. Stay silent!”
Fortunately, Old Jack, with his vast experience, immediately calmed them.
“Did you all hear? Stay silent!” Gervas issued his order at once.
At once, all subordinates clamped their mouths shut, watching the sea with tense, wide eyes.
Now, the sea beast was less than three hundred meters from the hull.
Just as despair began to creep in, the beast finally slowed and halted.
It paused far off, then slowly lifted its head.
Its head resembled a lizard’s, but its size rivaled a stone house.
Its huge, amber-brown eyes studied the ship with curiosity, making everyone’s hearts lodge in their throats.
Roar!
Thankfully, after only a moment of observation, the beast let out a roar, then plunged its head back beneath the waves and twisted its body to turn away, swimming off into the distance.
Seconds later, the beast vanished beyond the horizon.
“T-t-t-t-t-t… I nearly died of fright!”
Though they’d only watched from afar, everyone aboard felt as if they’d passed through death and rebirth.
Soldiers gasped for breath, collapsing to the deck.
Gervas and Knight Commander Lei Meng exchanged glances, finally grasping the true danger of the sea.
No wonder everyone in this world feared the ocean—facing such a beast, even a Bronze Knight would be helpless.
Even a Silver Knight might feel powerless!
Of course, this encounter made Gervas even more certain: enhancing his strength must be his top priority in this world.
Otherwise, whether Bronze or Silver Knight, he was still far too insignificant.
The sea beast was merely an interlude; after that, the Stormwind sailed smoothly.
“My lord, ahead lies an island—green, with a very tall mountain range!”
Again, the lookout shouted from the mast!
The Volcanic Island had finally arrived!
