Chapter 62: Spirit Sight

~8 min read 1,438 words

After Gui Ping finished questioning and stepped back, a crowd of experts in the ruins immediately surged forward, their eagerness startling You Xuan so much he briefly thought they meant to pin him into a corner and rub him raw—he nearly called Chen Mo to guard him.

Fortunately, though they looked ravenous, none of them laid hands on him; instead, they bombarded him with questions about what had happened.

You Xuan briefly recounted how he had merely touched the stone slab and been sucked into the Spirit Realm, his observations there, the rumors he’d heard about the evil god devouring the Spirit Realm, and his subsequent duel with the thief Kees.

Now that he thought of it, something similar had happened during the Orichalcos arc back then—when the game and Atem had entered the Spirit Realm, and the Dark Magician Girl had begged them to defeat the evil god and save the Spirit Realm.

The experts weren’t particularly interested in his card duel with Kees; they pressed him repeatedly for details about the appearance of the Chaos Warrior.

“There’s another matter of great importance.”

The group leader, with a receding hairline and dark circles from who-knew-how-many sleepless nights, continued.

“Did you experience ‘Spirit Sight’?”

You Xuan blinked: “What’s that?”

Several researchers exchanged puzzled glances. Then the leader seemed to remember something and exclaimed, “Ah, right—you’re a student scheduled to enroll this year. Of course, you’ll learn about it in detail once you enter the academy.”

“Simply put, it’s a phenomenon that occasionally occurs when a duelist achieves high resonance with a spirit. Generally, we believe those with the ‘Spirit Affinity’ talent are more likely to experience Spirit Sight, but it’s also possible for duelists without this talent to experience it.”

“So what exactly is it?”

“The spirit’s potential,” the leader said, gesturing with his hands. “It’s indeterminate. Some see the forms and images of ancient Duel Monsters; others perceive specific scenes, objects, and so on.”

“No one has yet deciphered what most Spirit Sight visions mean. But many examples exist where research teams used the imagery seen in duelists’ Spirit Sight to develop new forms of Duel Monsters, or to create related magic traps based on the scenes and objects observed.”

You Xuan thought he understood.

In other words—it’s inspiration for card design, right?

How to design cards, what new forms monsters might evolve into, what types of support cards or objects might be needed.

If even a single reference could point researchers toward a specific direction, it might dramatically accelerate progress.

Understanding this, You Xuan instantly formed a bold idea.

He clearly hadn’t seen any Spirit Sight. But if what the research group wanted was merely guidance for card design...

“Oh, I think I did see something,” You Xuan said, frowning as if struggling to recall.

The entire research group erupted in joy. This was the first time anyone had resonated with a Chaos Warrior-related ruin—if they could extract clues from the Spirit Sight, they might finally break through their years-long research bottleneck!

The leader quickly raised a hand to calm the excited members, then held his breath and asked carefully: “What exactly did you see?”

“Even vague details are fine. Spirit Sight is usually fragmented. Even the smallest detail could help.”

“I remember—I saw two warriors, similar to the Chaos Warrior but in youthful forms. From the sword auras they unleashed, one seemed light-aligned, the other dark-aligned.”

The experts: “!”

Actual clues!

The group surged with excitement, frantically scribbling notes despite trembling hands.

“Two young warriors stepped onto an altar, flames burning in braziers on either side, crossed swords behind them. They vanished on the altar—one became light, the other darkness—merging into the form of the Chaos Warrior.”

As they took notes, the experts whispered among themselves.

“What does this mean? This sounds like the ‘Ritual of Chaos.’”

“Is this about ritual offerings?”

At these words, the leader froze as if struck by lightning—a thought flashed through his mind.

They had long been researching the possibility of a form stronger than “The Herald of Creation,” but according to this Spirit Sight, had their entire direction been wrong?

Could the key to evolution lie hidden in the choice of ritual offerings?

“Oh, I saw another scene.”

The experts: “!?”

What?

One Spirit Sight was already an extraordinary stroke of luck. How could this man produce two in a row?

“The background showed light emerging from endless chaos; the young warriors gradually grew within the light, becoming the Messengers of Chaos. Wait—I’ll have your professional artist come and sketch it—I can draw the scene for you directly.”

You Xuan kept going.

“Oh, I also saw another image.”

The experts: “???”

More?

But soon they realized they’d been naive.

It wasn’t even three. You Xuan continued, pouring out several more distinct scenes—ancient ritual sites, Gaia Knights charging on horseback transforming into the Chaos Warrior...

In moments, the experts were awestruck.

Not only had he experienced so many Spirit Sight visions at once, but he described each scene with unprecedented detail—something unheard of!

The leader even briefly suspected the boy was making it up to amuse them—but the fact that he had resonated with the ruin and earned the Chaos Warrior spirit’s acknowledgment was undeniable.

Just how terrifying was his “Spirit Affinity”?

Of course, they didn’t realize You Xuan hadn’t seen any Spirit Sight at all—he simply knew, as a future inhabitant of the real-card world, exactly what the future evolution paths of the entire card set would be.

So while the research group felt they’d obtained astonishing precision, You Xuan wished he could describe even more detail.

He could even list the exact attack and defense values and effects of every single card.

But You Xuan had self-studied basic card-making principles and understood that in this world, a monster’s attack/defense and card effects weren’t arbitrarily invented—they were descriptions of the card’s inherent power, rendered into duel rules that any duelist could understand.

Card designers didn’t manually assign effects by writing them—they merely described the card’s existing power in readable text form.

So even if You Xuan recited a card’s exact stats and effect text, it wouldn’t help card-making at all—because a card’s effects must reflect its actual power, not the other way around.

So the first things You Xuan described were, respectively, the future Chaos Warrior deck’s “Knight of Creation,” “Knight of Nightfall,” and the Ritual Spell “Sprout of the Supreme Warrior.”

“Knight of Creation” and “Knight of Nightfall” are both four-star lower-level Warrior monsters, specifically used as Ritual materials. Summoning the Chaos Warrior using them grants powerful effects: banishing an opponent’s monster, banishing one card from the opponent’s hand each turn, and multiple attacks per turn.

“Sprout of the Supreme Warrior” is the most powerful Ritual Spell in the Chaos Warrior system, allowing the Ritual Summon of the Chaos Warrior using monsters from both hand and deck.

He also briefly described several other auxiliary cards from memory.

These were all cards released years later, but by the time they arrived, the meta had become too brutal—the Chaos Warrior deck had already fallen behind. Still, if strengthened by the Kaiba Corporation’s research team in the current environment, they could still be formidable.

Of course, You Xuan was only testing the waters. He had no direct proof that future cards from his world could be printed here—this was simply his chance to use Kaiba’s top-tier research team for an experiment.

The leader exchanged contact information with him and insisted repeatedly that he contact him immediately if he remembered anything else. The research group also promised to notify him instantly if they made any progress.

If this experiment succeeded, it would be profoundly meaningful for You Xuan.

It wouldn’t just mean enhanced Chaos Warrior cards—it would prove that his memories of future cards, his past life as a card enthusiast, might become an inexhaustible treasure trove!

“Overtime! Everyone, work overtime!”

The group leader, eyes shadowed, shouted with exhilaration, as if seeing the dawn of breakthrough.

The Chaos Warrior spirit floated silently behind You Xuan, listening to his elaborate descriptions, a question mark slowly forming on its forehead.

Did the master really see all these Spirit Sight visions?

Why didn’t I see any of them?

Am I a fake spirit?
