Chapter 2: Who Transmigrated?
Xia Fangfei pedaled hard a few times, rushed in front of Di Ye, propped herself up on the ground with her toes, and asked with a grin, "Did you wait here specifically for me?"
In 1995, there were no LED lights yet; the streetlights on both sides of the main road used high-pressure sodium lamps, casting a yellowish light that made Xia Fangfei look quite charming. Di Ye studied her vibrant, youthful face and asked a question he already knew the answer to: "What are you doing here?"
Xia Fangfei hopped off her bicycle lightly and said straightforwardly, "You asked me to come, saying you had something to tell me."
"When did I ask you to come?"
"Just now, when the dormitory was about to turn off the lights, you called me and told me to come here."
"Are you sure it was me who called you? Did I state my name, or did you recognize my voice?"
Hearing Di Ye's unfriendly tone and his barrage of questions, Xia Fangfei's shyness instantly turned into annoyance. She snapped, "What are you trying to do with all these questions? Of course you stated your name yourself!"
Di Ye ignored her little fit of temper and continued asking, "Where exactly did I tell you to meet me?"
Xia Fangfei tilted her chin toward the small grove and said, "Right by the rockery over there."
Di Ye asked a few key questions to go through the motions, then said with a serious tone, "Xia Fangfei, you've been deceived. I didn't call you at all just now."
After saying this, he turned around, shone his flashlight toward the grove, and, incorporating the information provided by the bespectacled man, spoke slowly in chronological order: "I had dinner with some classmates tonight and accidentally got drunk. I went back to my rented place to sleep around 9 o'clock. I woke up at 10:30 because I was thirsty. When I got up to drink water, I discovered my BB Pager was missing, so I called a friend to come here with me to look for it. We ended up seeing a man in black by the rockery. When he heard my friend call my name, he turned and ran immediately. I felt it was suspicious, so I chased after him, and then I saw you riding your bike over."
Xia Fangfei didn't believe him at all. She snorted and teased, "Have you been reading too many detective novels? What man in black, man in white—you're just making up stories!"
Di Ye couldn't be bothered to argue. He took Xia Fangfei to the edge of the grove, called out for Teacher Feng twice, and after receiving a reply, said, "Whether I'm lying to you or not, you'll know as soon as my friend comes over. Besides, use your brain—this grove is dark and remote. Even if I were to ask you out to meet, I wouldn't pick this dump of a place, would I?"
Xia Fangfei had been pursuing Di Ye for months and knew his personality and preferences quite well. After thinking it over, her expression gradually turned to panic, and she asked, "You really didn't call me?"
"I really didn't."
"Then did you see who that man in black was?"
Di Ye shook his head and said, "I didn't see his face. I only know he was a little over 1.7 meters tall, had a slim build, and was carrying a black crossbody bag."
Xia Fangfei stomped her foot and exclaimed frantically, "There are plenty of people like that in school!"
There were indeed many people like that, but such bags were rare because it was a Notebook Computer bag, which was very uncommon in 1995. Furthermore, considering this person knew Di Ye and was aware of his relationship with Xia Fangfei, the circle of suspects was already very small.
However, Di Ye had just transmigrated and hadn't figured many things out yet; he didn't want to cause extra trouble, so he kept his composure and didn't say much more.
At this moment, Feng Shijie walked over from the south side of the gravel path, holding a flashlight. Upon seeing Xia Fangfei, he subconsciously tightened his somewhat worn-out military overcoat and asked, "Di Ye, did you find the BB Pager?"
"No, but I ran into something strange. Teacher Feng, this is Xia Fangfei from the Foreign Languages Institute. She says..."
Di Ye had a silver tongue; he explained the ins and outs in a few words. Feng Shijie and Xia Fangfei compared their timelines, and Feng said quite firmly, "Student Xia, if you received the call around 10:50, then you were definitely deceived. At that time, Di Ye and I were on our way here. Besides, there are no public phone booths in this vicinity. If he wanted to call you, he would have had to go outside the West Gate, which takes at least 20 minutes round trip."
Xia Fangfei felt a lingering fear and asked with a trembling voice, "What should I do now? Should I call the police?"
Di Ye felt calling the police would be useless and analyzed, "This person definitely used a public phone; it will be hard for the police to trace it. Even if they did, there's no way to press charges—it was just a prank call, and the other party could just brush it off as a joke."
Feng Shijie also disagreed with calling the police, thinking it was making a mountain out of a molehill. He said, "Student Xia, don't be overly nervous. We are at a key university; the campus is very safe. Perhaps it was just a joke played by some friend."
In the 90s, social order wasn't great, and various vicious crimes occurred frequently on university campuses. It was just that the internet hadn't become widespread yet, information flow was poor, and many people assumed they were safe. Xia Fangfei was the same; hearing this, she relaxed and said angrily, "If I find out who played this kind of joke, I'll definitely slap them ten times!"
Slapping someone is useless; killing them is the only way to go...
But after the commotion tonight, I'll have to think of another way to kill the murderer...
According to the bespectacled man, the murderer's purpose in killing Xia Fangfei was to frame him, but this was only a speculation. Di Ye couldn't be sure, so he felt some worry. He and Feng Shijie walked Xia Fangfei to the entrance of the women's dormitory and urged, "Be careful these next few days. Don't leave the dormitory if you don't have to. If you must go out, call some friends to accompany you, especially at night."
Xia Fangfei felt his concern and was overjoyed. She smiled and asked, "Then if I ask you to accompany me, will you?"
Di Ye pulled back his sleeve to check his Electronic Watch. Seeing it was already 11:40, he was in a rush to go back and study who the murderer was with the bespectacled man. He had no interest in entanglement and said casually, "If it's convenient, I will."
Seeing the Electronic Watch, the smile on Xia Fangfei's face grew even wider. She asked, "How is the watch I gave you? Is it comfortable to wear?"
Di Ye was startled. He raised his wrist, pointed at the Electronic Watch, and asked, "You gave me this?"
Xia Fangfei glared at him and complained, "Are you muddled from drinking? This watch was the New Year's gift I gave you this afternoon!"
Hearing her say this, Di Ye understood one thing in an instant. He hurriedly laughed it off and said solemnly, "This watch is great. I like it very much and will wear it every day from now on. Thank you very much."
Xia Fangfei was very satisfied with his response. She raised her right hand, which was wearing a wool glove, waved it, and said, "As long as you like it. I'm going back to the dorm. Bye-bye."
"Bye."
After Xia Fangfei had the dormitory warden open the iron gate and walked into the building, Feng Shijie, who had been standing on the side like a third wheel, asked, "Di Ye, are we still going to look for the BB Pager?"
Di Ye let out a long breath, turned, and walked toward the Faculty Dormitory Area, saying indifferently, "No need. If it's lost, let it be. I don't really use it much anyway. Let's go back and sleep."
Feng Shijie trotted two steps to catch up and pried, "You don't even want the BB Pager anymore? Your family must be quite wealthy, right?"
Di Ye still didn't know the situation of this body's family, so he brushed it off: "It's alright."
Feng Shijie had the heart of a paparazzi and continued to pry, "I see Student Xia treats you quite well. Are you two dating?"
"Not really, we just have a pretty good relationship."
"Student Xia is quite pretty, and she dresses well too. You two are a good match."
Di Ye also didn't know what his relationship with Xia Fangfei was really like, so he blathered, "Those are all superficial things. Dating is mainly about whether your personalities are compatible."
Hearing this, Feng Shijie sighed with emotion and mocked himself, "You're tall and handsome, so you have the right to be picky. Someone like me, who is short and poor, doesn't even get to choose personality—I can only choose gender. As long as it's a woman, that's fine."
Di Ye hadn't looked in a mirror since he transmigrated and didn't know what he looked like now. Hearing this, he touched his cheek, not knowing what to say. He took his wallet out of the inner pocket of his down jacket, took out two 50-yuan bills, gave them to Feng Shijie, and changed the subject: "Teacher Feng, thank you for tonight."
"It was just a small favor, and I didn't really help much anyway."
Feng Shijie was polite with his words, but his hands were not hesitant at all; he quickly took the money and said enthusiastically, "If you need any help in the future, just come to me. I'm very familiar with the people in the Academic Affairs Office and the Student Union, and I know quite a few teachers in the Computer College."
"Alright."
The two returned to Faculty Dormitory Building 21 and parted ways at the stairwell. Di Ye hurried up to the 3rd floor, put his crutches back in front of Room 306, then walked into Room 303, closed the door, took off the Electronic Watch, and pressed the button on the top right.
This time, the Electronic Watch didn't react as quickly as last time. Di Ye pressed it several times in a row, and after waiting about five or six seconds, the translucent Light Screen finally popped up. The bespectacled man, with headphones around his neck and a controller in his hand, asked, "How is the situation?"
Di Ye was somewhat stunned to see him like this and asked, "Are you playing games?"
"Yeah, games in 2023 are much more fun than in 1995. I was just playing 'Street Fighter 5' for a bit..."
"Damn it! Don't mess up the rank I worked so hard to get."
The bespectacled man put down the controller, took out an ID card, held it up in front of him, pointed at the name on it, then pointed at his own face, and said with a smile, "Our souls have swapped time and space. Now I am Di Ye. Even your name and your body belong to me, let alone your game account."
Di Ye looked at the name on the ID card that couldn't be more familiar, then looked at the face in the Light Screen that couldn't be more familiar, feeling it was extremely absurd. He smiled bitterly, "You old antique from 1995 are adapting quite quickly in 2023. You actually learned how to go online and play games in no time."
"I am, after all, a top student from the Computer Science Department at Yun University. Of course I can use such simple things as soon as I try."
"Heh, if I had canceled the automatic login for Steam before I transmigrated, I don't believe you'd be able to play right now."
