Chapter 219: Wanwan, A Li is gone
Cheng Wan hung up the phone, turned around, and met Chu Li's gaze.
Gentle and infatuated.
Cheng Wan frowned imperceptibly and calmly looked away.
She walked over to sit beside An'an and watched the children playing.
It was a happy and warm scene.
Chu Li wished that time could stop right here.
It is a pity, however, that time will not stop for anyone.
Old Master Chu was pushed in by the butler in his wheelchair; seeing Cheng Wan and An'an, his originally withered and thin face instantly revealed a smile.
"Wanwan is here." He was very gratified.
Cheng Wan taught An'an to call him Great-Grandfather.
An'an called out obediently.
Old Master Chu was very happy; he had finally seen his great-granddaughter and had no regrets left in life.
Cheng An'an was not afraid of anyone; whoever asked her, she would answer crisply, a tiny little person, without the slightest bit of shyness.
The more Old Master Chu looked, the more satisfied he was; Cheng Wan was a qualified mother.
And also a suitable mistress for the Chu family.
Thinking of this, he felt that Chu Li was truly disappointing, as he still hadn't coaxed Cheng Wan back after so long.
He couldn't help but glare fiercely at Chu Li.
Chu Li was baffled.
Old Master Chu enthusiastically invited Cheng Wan to take the two children to visit the Chu family.
Cheng Wan refused with a faint smile, and she left with the two children.
Old Master Chu dared not ask them to stay, and could only watch longingly as they disappeared down the corridor.
Afterwards, he turned back to scold his disappointing grandson.
"Truly useless, you still can't handle it now."
Chu Li was noncommittal, "The house is such a mess, do I dare let her come back?"
Old Master Chu was choked; the house was indeed a mess.
"I have already told Chu Yue to pack up and go back, and as for Bolin, I have also told him to leave the Old Residence as soon as possible."
Chu Li frowned, clearly dissatisfied with such an arrangement.
After all, Chu Yue and Chu Bolin had done many things while he was unconscious.
They would not be reconciled, and in the future, they would surely come up with who knows what kind of schemes.
After a few seconds of silence, Old Master Chu said slowly, "I don't have many days left to live either; just treat it as me hoping to have someone see me off. As for after I die, whatever you want to do is up to you."
This was handing over everything in the Chu family to Chu Li.
Chu Li looked at the Old Master's clearly listless appearance, and his heart felt a bit of reluctance, "I understand, Grandfather."
Old Master Chu was very satisfied and urged Chu Li again, "You must bring Wanwan home as soon as possible and have another son to inherit the family business."
Chu Li was constant in his affections, so he wouldn't have any illegitimate children or the like.
Chu Li thought of An'an, and his gaze softened, "Must it be a son? I think An'an can fully inherit the family property in the future."
Old Master Chu shook his head, "It's not that I favor boys over girls, but I feel that a girl should be raised in luxury and be happy for her whole life; why take on such great pressure? Isn't it good for you to give her a younger brother to protect her so she can be worry-free for her whole life?"
Chu Li was moved, but he could not promise the Old Master such a thing.
He would treat his children equally, but Chu Li did not want to interfere with their development after they grew up.
That was their own freedom.
Old Master Chu knew his thoughts just by looking at Chu Li's expression; never mind, he waved his hand. Chu Li hadn't even won the person back yet; thinking about those things was still too early.
He had the butler push him away.
But just as they exited the hospital room, there was a sudden muffled thud behind them.
The butler pushed Old Master Chu to turn around, only to see that Chu Li, who had been fine just a moment ago, was already lying on the floor.
"A Li."
"Call the doctor."
Countless footsteps rang out in the corridor.
When Cheng Wan received the news, she had just coaxed An'an to sleep.
Cheng Han's voice was very low and heavy, "Wanwan, A Li is gone."
Like a clap of thunder on a clear day, it exploded, making Cheng Wan's ears buzz.
Her fingers could barely hold onto the phone.
"What did you say?"
Cheng Wan heard her teeth chattering; she took several deep breaths, but her voice was still trembling.
"Wanwan, come to the Yi Garden; I've sent a driver to pick you up."
Cheng Han hung up the phone.
Cheng Wan gripped her phone tightly; she first went downstairs to find the Third Madam and asked her to help look after the two children, then hurried out.
The Yiyuan.
Cheng Wan saw Cheng Han at the main entrance; under the lights, his complexion was dark and heavy.
Cheng Wan took a few steps up the stairs, but on the last step, she lifted her foot too low and almost fell.
Cheng Han supported her, giving her strength.
"Wanwan, don't be too sad," Cheng Han advised in a low voice.
Cheng Wan gripped his arm tightly, "He was perfectly fine, how did he just..."
When she left with the child, he had been doing quite well.
Cheng Han shook his head, "Preliminary investigation suggests it was caused by drugs."
"Drugs?"
"Yes, it looks like drug poisoning."
The specific situation will have to wait for the investigation results.
As the two spoke, they arrived at the entrance of the morgue.
Old Master Chu sat in a wheelchair, his back hunched, his eyes closed as if he were asleep.
Madam Chu was crying so hard she nearly fainted.
Chu Bolin and Chu Yue stood on the other side, both with expressions of grief on their faces.
It felt as if Cheng Wan's feet were filled with lead; she could not take a single step forward.
She looked at that cold, icy door and felt as if the blood in her entire body had turned cold along with it.
"Wanwan, do you want to go in and see him one last time?" Cheng Han supported her body to keep her from falling.
Cheng Wan's eyes felt dry and stinging, "Okay."
She walked inside step by step, until the hospital bed covered by a white sheet appeared in her line of sight.
She suddenly lost all her strength.
"Wanwan." Cheng Han called her name, full of worry and heartache, "If you can't hold on, we can come back another day."
"Let's go."
Cheng Wan continued forward.
The white sheet was lifted a small bit, revealing a deathly pale face.
Cheng Wan closed her eyes, and tears fell.
It was Chu Li.
Chu Li, who no longer had any breath left.
Cheng Wan's trembling fingers brushed over his nose bridge and forehead; they were ice cold.
She clearly perceived the temperature of Chu Li's body; he was truly gone.
"Wanwan, let's go." Cheng Han did not want Cheng Wan to stay here any longer; it was harmful to her health and spirit.
Yet Cheng Wan pushed his arm, "You go out first; I want to stay here for a while."
Cheng Han opened his mouth, wanting to persuade her, but in the end, he chose to leave alone first.
The cold air burrowed into her skin, icy cold.
The sobs Cheng Wan had suppressed for so long were finally released.
Her tears broke like a dam.
She clearly had no feelings for him anymore, yet seeing him lying here so cold, her heart felt like a large piece of it had been hollowed out, with cold wind whistling through.
"Chu Li, someone as capable as you, how did you just..." Cheng Wan could not continue.
She was in extreme pain.
She did not know how much time had passed before she finally straightened her body, teardrops still hanging from her eyelashes.
"Rest assured, I will tell An'an that you are her father."
This was the final promise she gave him.
She wiped away her tears and left, stumbling.
Cheng Han had been waiting for her by the door, and seeing her come out, he immediately supported her body.
"Wanwan, let's go back."
Cheng Wan walked in front of Old Master Chu and called out in a low voice, "Grandfather."
Old Master Chu, who had not moved for a long time, slowly raised his head; his sharp gaze had become murky, which was startling to behold.
