Chapter 62: Old Master Chu Wants to Adopt a Granddaughter

~8 min read 1,488 words

The more Madam Chu thought about it, the uglier her expression became.

"To think the Chu family would have such a scandal; it's all that dead girl Qin Xingwan's fault." She gritted her teeth in hatred.

Chu Li frowned, "What does this have to do with Xingwan? She doesn't even know about this matter."

He warned Madam Chu, "Do not go around talking nonsense outside."

Madam Chu wanted to retort, but seeing her son's expression, she held it back.

In the ward across the hall, Qin Xingwan had showered and changed; seeing that her grandmother had not yet woken up, she went to the room next door to rest.

But her sleep was not very peaceful.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw Chu Li's flippant and sarcastic appearance.

Chu Li walked in on tiptoe.

Qin Xingwan was fast asleep, her long, pitch-black hair spread across the snow-white pillow, making her thin face look even more fragile and pale; her brows were furrowed in unease, as if she were carrying countless grievances.

He watched her quietly for a long time, then left silently.

When Qin Xingwan woke up, her body felt weak, and her mind was groggy.

She assumed it was because she hadn't slept well and didn't pay it any mind, pulling the door open to go out.

Outside, the indistinct voice of Old Master Chu drifted over.

"Now that we... are heaven... fate."

"The previous matters were my... to make amends..."

"Since Xingwan is your... that means she is also my... rest assured... I will..."

Compared to his usual high-and-mighty tone, Old Master Chu's way of speaking this time could be called gentle.

Qin Xingwan didn't listen carefully; worried that her grandmother was being bullied, she hurried out.

"Grandma."

She stared at Old Master Chu vigilantly, "What do you want?"

Qin Nainai was leaning against the head of the bed, her spirits much improved, and she shook her head at Qin Xingwan.

Qin Xingwan thought of Old Master Chu's various tactics and for a moment didn't know what to do.

She simply continued to stand in front of her grandmother.

Old Master Chu coughed awkwardly and looked at Qin Xingwan, "I want to adopt you as my granddaughter."

Qin Xingwan was stunned.

Adopted granddaughter?

Old Master Chu added, "I am sincere. If you are willing, I would even like to hold a recognition banquet for you; from then on, no one in Yuncheng will dare to bully you."

The conditions he offered were very tempting.

But Qin Xingwan did not trust him, guessing this was another trick he had come up with.

"I appreciate your kindness."

Old Master Chu knew what Qin Xingwan wanted.

"Chu Li is unwilling to get the divorce certificate, but I can help you."

Qin Xingwan fell silent; she didn't understand—if Old Master Chu wanted her to divorce Chu Li, he could simply threaten him as he had done before.

Why did he insist on adopting her as his granddaughter?

Old Master Chu sighed slightly and continued, "You have ability, but when working hard out there, it is difficult to get ahead with only strength and no background. By becoming my granddaughter, you will be a daughter of the Chu family; with me watching over you, no one will dare to bully you."

What a tempting condition.

Qin Nainai's expression was somewhat moved; she knew how much her granddaughter had suffered, and since there was now a shortcut to take, why not?

She asked for Qin Xingwan's opinion in a low voice, "Wanwan, what do you think?"

Qin Xingwan lowered her eyes indifferently, "I don't have that kind of fortune."

She did not trust Old Master Chu.

He was temperamental; if she offended him in the future, who knew what methods he might use again.

She was unwilling to take the risk.

Old Master Chu's expression was visibly disappointed, yet he did not fly into a rage. His lips moved as if to speak, but upon catching Qin Nainai's gaze, he swallowed those words back down.

Qin Nainai pondered for a few seconds, then agreed on Qin Xingwan's behalf.

"Wanwan, he is right; with him around, no one will dare to bully you."

Qin Xingwan was puzzled, "Grandma?"

Old Master Chu coughed lightly and became happy again.

"I will have people prepare the recognition banquet for tomorrow night; at that time, I will introduce you to those relatives."

Judging by the sound of it, he intended to hold a grand event.

"The divorce certificate takes thirty days; let's make it the day after tomorrow. Go get it then; rest assured, Grandfather will handle it for you."

Qin Xingwan breathed a sigh of relief; no matter how powerful Chu Li was, he still had to listen to the Old Master.

The divorce was a certainty.

Qin Nainai said softly, "I've troubled you with this matter."

Old Master Chu nodded hurriedly, "Rest assured, rest assured."

He walked away leaning on his cane, his back looking quite pleased.

Qin Xingwan felt a strange sensation in her heart; she turned to look at her grandmother, "Why did you agree?"

Wasn't Grandma afraid he was up to some other bad scheme?

Qin Nainai smiled gently and kindly, raising her hand to stroke her granddaughter's hair, "Qin Shen is going abroad soon, and those parents of yours hate you to the bone; they will inevitably try every possible way to find trouble for you."

"If he promotes your career to be brilliant, the Qin Jianguo couple won't dare to bully you."

Qin Xingwan found it strange; how could Grandma trust Old Master Chu so much?

"Do you know him?"

Old Master Chu had always been arrogant, looking down on everyone equally, yet today he was quite amiable.

Qin Xingwan did not believe she had the ability to make Old Master Chu change his attitude.

That meant it was... Grandma.

She knew Grandma had her best interests at heart, but she still felt a sense of unease in her heart.

"I don't have the ability to handle the favors he is offering."

She resisted it from the bottom of her heart.

Qin Nainai smiled; it was a good thing her granddaughter was clear-headed, but some things had already been offered right to her face.

"It would be a waste not to take it," Qin Nainai said.

Qin Xingwan gave a wry smile; Grandma had not answered that question.

This meant that Grandma and Old Master Chu were acquainted, and perhaps their relationship was not shallow.

But since Grandma clearly did not want to say more, she did not press the matter.

Her head felt heavy and muddled; she ate a little something and went to the room next door to rest.

Later, she was woken up by Chu Li.

A palm with a cool touch pressed against her forehead, and the man's brows were furrowed deeply.

Qin Xingwan also realized something was wrong with her; even though the air conditioning was on in the room, she felt very hot.

She had a fever.

It made sense; she had been caught in a downpour earlier and then sat in the cold air of the Yiyuan for half an hour, so catching a cold was normal.

She lifted the quilt to get up, but her head swam, and she went limp, unable to stand.

Chu Li supported her, looked at her abnormally flushed face, tucked her back into the quilt, and walked quickly out to find a doctor.

The doctor came over and took her temperature: thirty-nine point five degrees.

"Give me an injection," Qin Xingwan said weakly, resting her hand on her forehead.

Injections worked faster, and she had something important to do tomorrow night, so she needed to be energetic.

The doctor glanced at Chu Li, and after receiving an affirmative answer, went immediately to make arrangements.

After the injection, Qin Xingwan drifted off into a hazy sleep.

Chu Li shook her gently, "A press conference will be held tomorrow, and Qin Shen will admit to what he has done at the press conference."

"Mm," Qin Xingwan shrank further into the quilt.

Chu Li pulled the quilt up for her, leaned down, and said almost right into her ear: "After the press conference ends, he will be put on a plane to go abroad; do you want to go to the airport to see him off?"

Qin Shen going abroad?

Qin Xingwan forced herself to stay alert and asked for the time, "What time?"

"Four o'clock in the afternoon."

She nodded: "I will go."

For such an important occasion, she naturally had to go and witness it.

A flicker of other emotions passed through Chu Li's eyes; he touched her forehead and did not disturb her further.

Once her fever broke, her breathing became deeper.

Only then did Chu Li carefully lie down beside her, his arm gently wrapping around her.

His eyes were filled with surging darkness.
