Chapter 67: You are my wife, I do not want to change this relationship

~8 min read 1,547 words

One reason Qin Yunshu fled her wedding was that she had fallen for another man, and the other reason was Lady Qin.

Lady Qin seemed to have been less than satisfied with this prospective son-in-law, Chu Li, from the very beginning, feeling that he was too career-driven and that her daughter would suffer grievances in the future.

Being a brother would have been fine.

Now, it could be considered a wish come true.

"Do not always feel aggrieved," Lady Qin said, looking at her daughter with affection and willing to reason with her. "As long as you live well, sooner or later you will make those who look down on you regret it."

"Just like your father; he slapped you during the day and didn't give you a pleasant look, but just watch, from this moment on, you are the apple of his eye."

As she was speaking, Qin Jianguo came out.

Lady Qin tucked away those thoughts in her heart and asked Qin Jianguo in a low voice, "What did you mean just now?"

Seeing that there was no one around, Qin Jianguo lowered his voice and said to his wife and daughter, "Do you know why Old Master Chu suddenly adopted a granddaughter?"

Qin Yunshu shook her head; Lady Qin knew some of the inside story, but she naturally would not interrupt her husband's desire to share.

"Our family's old lady and Old Master Chu are old acquaintances, and it looks to me like their relationship is quite good," Qin Jianguo had his own calculations in mind.

He advised his wife and daughter, "Be better to the old lady from now on, and come visit more often."

He left in a hurry, intending to go buy some supplements for the old lady himself; he was determined to see the old lady live to ninety-nine.

Qin Yunshu gripped Lady Qin's clothes tightly, her eyes filled with unconcealable disgust and hatred. "So, it was she who asked for it for Qin Xingwan."

She was unwilling to accept this; Grandma was too biased.

Lady Qin patted her daughter's shoulder and urged, "So what if she asked for it for Qin Xingwan? A Li still gave this kind of good fortune to you."

"You must remember what Mom said: A Li is your greatest reliance. As for those who already have one foot in the grave, there is no need to care about them."

Qin Yunshu took it to heart; she wiped away her tears and tucked her arm into Lady Qin's. "Mom, let's go home."

"Alright."

……

Chu Li came to the Yiyuan to see Qin Nainai.

Qin Nainai asked him where Qin Xingwan was.

Chu Li bent both knees and knelt before Grandma, begging for her blessing.

"I truly love Xingwan and am unwilling to divorce."

Qin Nainai was streaming with tears, her heart aching for her granddaughter.

She asked Chu Li with a tremble: "She was married to you for three years and bore your child; you didn't cherish her then, so what face do you have now to say you are unwilling to divorce?"

"How much more must you hurt her before you are willing to stop?"

"If you truly want to win her back, you should proceed slowly, rather than locking her up; that is a lack of respect for her."

It was simply foolish.

Chu Li set aside all his pride and knelt straight.

"I will."

He spoke as if to himself, "She will forgive me."

She definitely will.

Qin Nainai could not make him understand, so she simply called for Old Master Chu.

She lost her temper: "Manage your own grandson; I only want Wanwan."

Old Master Chu did not hold back; his cane struck Chu Li's back heavily, demanding he release Qin Xingwan.

The dragon-headed cane was heavy, and when it struck the body, a light drag left a wound behind.

Chu Li did not utter a sound, enduring it silently.

After a dozen strikes, Chu Li's face turned pale, yet he still refused to yield.

Old Master Chu panted heavily, feeling powerless; although he had threatened Chu Li with revoking his inheritance, in reality, it was just talk.

No one in the Chu family had his capability.

He still felt some heartache, more or less.

He looked at Qin Nainai, "Shall we continue tomorrow?"

Grandma Qin sighed heavily; she ached for Wanwan, but she had already beaten and scolded Chu Li.

He still refused to let go.

Qin Nainai had no other way.

She could only compromise: "At the very least, let me see her."

Chu Li stood up, sweat dripping from his forehead, his handsome face pale. "After some time, I will bring her to see you."

He turned and left, his straight back covered in bloodstains on his white shirt.

Qin Nainai could no longer hold back and burst into tears, calling out to his retreating figure.

"Treat her better."

"Don't let her be bullied again."

Chu Li paused his steps and gave a soft "Mm."

……

Chu Li walked out of the hospital room into the pitch-black night.

He received a call from the servant.

"The Madam has a fever."

Regardless of the wounds on his own body, he hurried back.

Upon entering the villa gate, the servant quickly said, "The Madam is in the room."

Chu Li went straight to the master bedroom.

Pushing open the door, he saw Qin Xingwan leaning against the headboard, her thin face flushed with an unnatural red.

He lightened his footsteps as he walked over and gently stroked her shoulder.

Suddenly, his fingers curled slightly.

Qin Xingwan was holding her phone, and on the screen, today's recognition banquet was playing.

His voice rang out clearly just like that.

"From now on, Yun Shu is the daughter of the Chu family, my sister, Chu Li's sister; no one is allowed to bully her."

A thick sense of protectiveness rushed toward her.

"Xingwan." Chu Li forced her name out from his throat.

Qin Xingwan looked up at her husband; she chuckled softly, though her eyes were red, "So, you locked me up for her sake."

Her tone was so calm it was unsettling.

"If you wanted to give her this opportunity, you could have just told me directly; why pretend to have such disgusting deep affection?"

She watched the video over and over again, from initial disbelief, anger, and sadness to her current calmness, as if she had lived through a century.

At this moment, every word and every sentence was a sign of a heart giving up.

She did not understand how he could keep saying he wanted to reconcile while simultaneously protecting Qin Yunshu.

He even handed everything that belonged to her over to Qin Yunshu.

Chu Li knelt on one knee on the floor, carefully taking her burning hands in his, "Xingwan, listen to my explanation."

Qin Xingwan turned her head away, tears welling up silently; it was more painful to watch than any hysterical outburst.

"You are my wife; I don't want to change that relationship." He embraced her with near-devotion, attempting to soothe her with a gentle tone, "Yun Shu is only my sister; there will only ever be a sibling relationship between us. Do you understand my good intentions?"

But in Qin Xingwan's eyes, these were all excuses.

Ridiculous excuses.

Clearly, in his heart, Qin Yunshu was the most important person.

Otherwise, he wouldn't have stepped in personally to back her up after Qin Shen left.

He even trapped her here.

"I cannot understand your good intentions; I only know that you have made my life a complete mess."

No more tears fell from her black-and-white eyes; there was only hatred for the man before her.

Chu Li did not care about those words of hers.

He had prepared himself mentally when he decided to do this.

He would not back down.

Gently stroking his wife's burning forehead, he whispered softly, "Lie down and rest for a while; the family doctor is on the way."

He took away her phone, turned it off, placed it on the headboard, and flattened her pillow, as if making idle small talk.

"I went to the Yiyuan to see Grandmother; she is doing very well now."

"When your health improves, I will take you to see Grandmother."

After finishing all this, his body swayed, but he immediately stood straight again.

The room was at a comfortable temperature, yet a thin layer of sweat covered his forehead.

With somewhat unsteady footsteps, he walked out.

Qin Xingwan stared blankly at the ceiling, her voice hoarse: "Now, do I not even have the qualification to go to the Yiyuan?"

Chu Li stumbled, clutching the doorframe; he dared not look back, only saying in a low voice: "The family doctor will take good care of you."

Having said that, he vanished from the doorway, almost as if fleeing in a panic.

Qin Xingwan opened her eyes wide, dry, unable to shed any more tears.

Outside the door, Chu Li leaned against the wall; the intense pain made it nearly impossible for him to stand straight, and he could only lean on the wall, making his way to the study with difficulty and slowness.

On the snow-white wall, a faint pink trace was left behind.
