Chapter 69: Qin Xingwan's Emotions Fluctuate for Another Man
A few minutes later, the servant came back up.
"Madam, the master says you must go down."
Qin Xingwan did not want to go, but thinking of her grandmother, she still put down her book.
She walked slowly into the living room and stood beside the doctor, with no intention of speaking.
Chu Li had been watching her, trying to catch a trace of emotional change on his wife's indifferent face.
The doctor looked left and right, clearly sensing the discord between the husband and wife.
Holding the medicine, he braced himself and said to Qin Xingwan, "Madam, this is Mr. Chu's medicine. The method of use is..."
He gave the instructions, thinking Qin Xingwan would be impatient, but she was not; instead, she listened earnestly.
"Understood."
Her emotions remained steady throughout.
The doctor finished his instructions and left.
Qin Xingwan ordered the servant to put the medicine away; from beginning to end, she did not ask where her husband's injury was or if it hurt.
Chu Li felt desolate inside, and his expression turned ugly bit by bit.
Just as Qin Xingwan was about to leave, he gripped her wrist, unable to control his own panicked and angry emotions.
"I am sick." His gaze remained fixed on her bright eyes.
Qin Xingwan looked at him quietly and said coldly, "Just take your medicine on time."
It looked earnest, but it was extremely perfunctory.
Chu Li's throat felt terribly dry, "Xingwan, I have a fever."
He emphasized.
"If you are really uncomfortable, just go to the Yiyuan," Qin Xingwan said indifferently, pulling her wrist free.
As for how uncomfortable he was, she did not care.
A flash of pain crossed Chu Li's eyes, but he could not say another word.
All of this was caused by him.
He deserved it.
Qin Xingwan went to the study and sat by the window reading, her fair face completely calm.
Before long, footsteps sounded.
She raised her eyes slightly to look over.
Chu Li placed a glass of water and medicine by her hand, "Your cold hasn't healed yet, remember to take your medicine."
Qin Xingwan put down her book, swallowed the medicine, and put the glass back.
She picked up her book again, with no intention of talking to him.
Chu Li stood there for a while; he would rather she cry and make a scene, hit him or scold him, than see her look so devoid of sorrow or joy.
His thin lips moved several times, but in the end, he did not speak.
He left in low spirits.
And after he left, the page in Qin Xingwan's hand remained unturned for a long time.
In the afternoon, Chu Li called and asked Qin Xingwan to prepare to attend a small gathering among friends.
His tone was gentle; one could not tell there had been any unpleasantness in the morning.
Qin Xingwan agreed, went to the cloakroom to casually change into a beige dress, and braided her long hair, looking sufficiently appropriate.
After getting ready, the driver took her out.
She had never participated in any of Chu Li's private gatherings among friends.
After all, everyone knew their marriage did not begin with love, and a marriage without love would end sooner or later.
Qin Xingwan arrived a bit early, and there were only three or four people scattered in the private room.
Among them were Qin Yunshu and Cheng Mingzhu.
At the first sight of Qin Yunshu, Qin Xingwan frowned.
If she had known Qin Yunshu was here, she would not have come.
And as luck would have it, Qin Yunshu was wearing the same color clothes as her and had her hair braided in the same way.
Cheng Mingzhu crossed her arms and started being sarcastic first: "An ugly woman imitating a beauty; don't some people think that just because they dress like Yun Shu, they can win the favor of Mr. Chu?"
Qin Yunshu called out softly, "Sister."
As if realizing something, she added softly, "If Sister doesn't like me calling you that, I can also call you Sister-in-law."
Every word was filled with showing off and provocation.
Qin Xingwan did not give Qin Yunshu a pleasant look, "Don't disgust me."
She went straight to find a seat and sat down.
Cheng Mingzhu glared fiercely at Qin Xingwan, then turned to comfort Qin Yunshu: "You are A Li's sister now, don't be sad; some people can't compare to you, and who knows when they'll be kicked out."
She gritted her teeth as she said this.
Everyone knew she liked Chu Li, and also knew the Chu family intended for her to be Chu Li's wife, yet Chu Li refused to divorce.
It was clear Qin Xingwan was just a woman he married at random.
It must be that Qin Xingwan used some base methods to bewitch him.
Qin Xingwan did not care about their affairs; in any case, she came here only to fulfill her responsibilities as Mrs. Chu.
People arrived one after another very quickly.
Chu Li walked in last, his face somewhat pale, his head lowered as he spoke to the person beside him.
Qin Yunshu stood up and called out to him happily: "Brother."
Chu Li raised his hand to stroke her hair, a hint of a smile appearing in his expression.
Anyone with a discerning eye could see his doting affection for this younger sister.
Someone joked, "It makes me want to go find a younger sister to dote on, too."
Qin Yunshu hugged Chu Li's arm and stuck her tongue out at the person, looking charming and innocent, "You won't be able to find a younger sister as cute as me."
"Envious, truly envious."
"A Li, your wife is here," someone in the crowd reminded him.
The laughter and teasing stopped instantly.
Chu Li looked toward Qin Xingwan.
She was sitting quietly in a corner seat, appearing completely indifferent to the teasing of others.
"Xingwan." He walked over quickly, "When did you arrive?"
Qin Xingwan pursed her lips and said indifferently, "Ten minutes ago."
Chu Li wanted to explain those jokes, but when the words reached his lips, he felt that no matter what he said, it would be superfluous.
He simply sat down beside her and took her somewhat cold hand.
Qin Xingwan lowered her eyes; in truth, she felt a bit disgusted.
After all, that hand of his had just touched Qin Yunshu's hair.
But since she was currently Madam Chu, she had to maintain some decorum.
After a while of lively activity, the private room door was pushed open.
A man with a slender figure stood at the doorway, the orange light falling on his face and outlining a cold, stern countenance.
Qin Xingwan saw that face, and she stood up almost abruptly, somewhat losing her composure as she murmured the man's name.
"Wen Lvzhong."
That tone carried a hint of sorrow.
Chu Li's heart skipped a beat, and his palm suddenly tightened.
He held his wife's hand and felt her fingertips trembling slightly.
He stood up.
Standing beside his wife, he said in a low voice, "When did you get back?"
Wen Lvzhong looked somewhat weary and found a seat to sit down, "I just got off the plane not long ago."
Chu Li nodded and, almost forcibly, pulled his wife to sit back down.
He caught sight of her reddened eye sockets, his pupils contracted sharply, and a multitude of thoughts emerged in his mind.
He and Wen Lvzhong could only be considered acquaintances; later, Wen Lvzhong went abroad.
Abroad...
Chu Li suddenly realized that Wen Lvzhong had also been abroad for three years.
He couldn't help but tighten his grip, his entire body stiffening.
Halfway through the gathering, Wen Lvzhong took a call, spoke a few words to the host of the party, and then stood up to drink a glass of wine: "Something has come up at home, I have to leave. Everyone, have a good time."
He walked away quickly.
Qin Xingwan lowered her eyes and hurriedly said to Chu Li, "I'm going to the restroom."
Without waiting for the man to answer, she had already walked away quickly.
Chu Li looked at his hand, which was still in a gripping posture, feeling a profound sense of emptiness in his heart.
Outside, Qin Xingwan caught up with Wen Lvzhong.
