Chapter 703: Not Trust Anyone
"I have something important to discuss with a few of my friends."
With those words, Carter turned around and left without giving anyone the chance to stop him.
Lina frowned deeply before quickly following after him.
"What happened?"
Her voice carried visible concern, but Carter remained silent. Not even a glance.
Deep inside, Carter already understood one thing very clearly.
He could not trust anyone anymore. Not even Lina. Especially not Lina.
After all, her own house had been turned into a surveillance nest without her noticing a single thing. Whether she was innocent or not no longer mattered to him. The risk was simply too great.
Because once the superior beings were given even the slightest opportunity, they would seize control of the entire country like a plague spreading endlessly.
At that time, the burden of thousands of deaths would fall directly onto his shoulders.
And all because he chose to trust a woman he often shared a bed with.
Soon, Carter arrived where Silas’s team was gathered.
Silas calmly glanced around before selecting a few individuals he trusted.
Then his gaze shifted toward Carter. "You should do the same."
However, Carter immediately rejected the suggestion. "I do not have anyone I trust."
The bluntness of those words struck Lina like a knife.
For a brief moment, pain flashed across her face. Her fingers curled tightly at her sides, but she forced herself to stay silent.
Meanwhile, Silas simply nodded calmly, as if he had expected this answer from the beginning.
Soon afterward, Carter entered the meeting room together with Silas and a few trusted members.
The meeting lasted for quite a while. When they finally came out, everyone’s expressions had become much grimmer than before.
Meanwhile... Benny waited. And waited.
Hours slowly passed as darkness swallowed the entire building, yet there was still no movement from anyone.
At first, Benny thought perhaps they had not discovered the hidden camera and audio transmitter after all.
However, just as he was beginning to relax slightly, he suddenly heard several people cheering excitedly nearby.
The loud laughter instantly made him frown in confusion.
Unable to hold himself back, he walked over and questioned them. "What happened?"
Sandra immediately turned toward him with a bright smile. "One of the superior beings has been captured."
The moment those words entered his ears, Benny felt as though freezing water had been poured directly over his entire body.
A superior being had been captured? This was terrible. His heartbeat immediately accelerated.
He needed to free that superior being somehow.
Not because of loyalty.
But because Benny already knew that the superior beings had started paying attention to him.
If he managed to help one of their kind escape even once, they would definitely notice his contribution.
And perhaps... perhaps they would finally recruit him.
The thought alone caused excitement and fear to intertwine violently inside his chest.
After thinking carefully for a long time, Benny finally decided that he would sneak into the holding location that very night.
After subtly asking around, he finally managed to discover where the captured superior being was supposedly being kept.
However... that night, he ultimately did not go. Because he suddenly realized something unsettling.
The situation was far too smooth.
The next morning, Silas arrived at the location together with several other team members.
However, the moment they arrived, they realized nothing had happened.
There were no signs of infiltration.
In fact, they had secretly monitored the entire location throughout the whole night because they wanted to lure the spy out.
After all, the traitor would definitely attempt to rescue the captured superior being in order to gain merit with the enemy.
Yet nobody appeared. That result left everyone confused. Especially Silas.
He narrowed his eyes slightly while staring at the empty room.
"That spy most likely realized we were trying to capture them."
Jay, however, remained far more optimistic.
"Or maybe the spy simply does not want to attract attention immediately. They could just be waiting for the right opportunity."
Silas shook his head immediately. "I disagree."
However, Jay stubbornly continued. "We should wait another two or three days before deciding anything."
After hearing that, Silas finally sighed softly.
"Fine. Do whatever you want. I will go make preparations elsewhere."
With that, he left alongside several others.
Meanwhile, Jay stayed behind. On the third night, their patience finally paid off.
A figure quietly sneaked inside the location. The moment Carter saw that person’s face clearly, his expression instantly froze.
It was Charles.
Charles carefully entered the room, his breathing slightly uneven from nervousness.
The moment he realized there was nobody there, his entire body stiffened.
He was stunned.
After all, he had received a message from Carter’s phone personally instructing him to free the superior being trapped inside this room.
The message had also warned him that if he got caught, he absolutely must not reveal the truth. Otherwise, his own family would be placed in danger.
That message had tormented Charles mentally for hours. Several times, he had wanted to confront Carter directly.
Yet throughout the entire day, Carter’s expression remained frighteningly cold. He never once looked in Charles’s direction.
That alone caused Charles’s heart to sink completely.
Out of everyone present, Charles was perhaps the easiest person to manipulate emotionally.
Although he had served within the government organization for many years, he had always been protected thanks to being Lina’s younger brother. Very few people dared scheme against him openly.
As a result, his personality remained somewhat naïve.
And because of that naïveté, he completely overlooked the countless loopholes within the suspicious message.
The instant Charles realized the room was empty, several figures suddenly rushed out from the shadows.
Jay and the others immediately pinned him down forcefully.
Charles struggled violently. "Wait! Let go of me!"
Panic filled his voice as his eyes desperately searched the room before finally landing on Carter.
There was pleading in his gaze. However, Carter only looked at him with deep disappointment.
