Chapter 1348: Anyway, Whoever Suffers Knows Best
Things had reached this point, and the entanglement only grew deeper.
Commander Guan had everyone involved brought back to the barracks.
Even Chuxue, who was stewing chicken soup for Fu Yan Cheng in the canteen, was not spared, because Tao Saozi had inadvertently mentioned that Chuxue had been asked to go up and watch the child.
Chuxue, who still needed to care for Fu Yan Cheng, was personally questioned by Commander Guan: "You asked Tao Saozi, the deputy company commander's wife, to go up and watch the child first; did you know something in advance?"
This remark left Chuxue speechless; she truly hadn't thought much of it, simply thinking the child was so small and might be frightened if he woke up and didn't see his mother. They were both military wives, so it was just a matter of lending a hand. She never expected to be called in for questioning: "Commander, I just wanted to help Tao Saozi. I knew nothing else. I figured since I was already down here watching the chicken soup simmering on the stove, keeping an eye on a pot of millet porridge was just a matter of convenience."
Seeing that she did not seem to be lying, Commander Guan asked a few more trivial questions before letting her go.
As she left, she asked Director Du of the canteen to keep an eye on the stove.
Seeing her return, Director Du spoke up: "Comrade Xiao, is everything alright?"
Chuxue nodded to her: "It's fine, just routine questioning."
Director Du was not a talkative person; hearing her say this, she pointed to the stove: "The millet porridge is ready, and the chicken soup just needs a bit more heat. Since you're back, I'll go get on with my work."
Chuxue hurriedly thanked her.
Just as she was wondering whether to take the millet porridge up to Tao Saozi first, a young soldier came in: "Sister-in-law, I'm Li Weidong, a soldier under Deputy Company Commander Tao. Tao Saozi sent me over to ask if there's anything you need help with?"
Hearing this, Chuxue understood Tao Saozi's intention. She smiled slightly at Li Weidong and pointed to the clay pot sitting by the stove: "You've arrived just in time. Help me take the porridge from that clay pot up to Tao Saozi and tell her I'll come find her as soon as I'm free."
After Li Weidong nodded and agreed, he carried the not-too-large clay pot and left.
What she hadn't expected was that just as she was pondering the day's events, Fu Yan Cheng's voice came: "Wife, are you alright?"
Chuxue was startled: "How did you get here?"
After looking Fu Yan Cheng up and down, she finally felt relieved: "Something so big happened upstairs, of course I heard about it. Later, I heard someone say you were implicated and called in for questioning, so I couldn't rest easy and came to check."
What he didn't say was that the moment he heard the rumors, he had rushed back to the barracks despite the searing pain in his back, only to find no one there; everyone had already left.
He had then hurried straight back to the hospital and rushed directly to the canteen.
It was August, and the weather was still very hot. After his trip back and forth, he was now drenched in sweat, and the wound on his back stung sharply from the perspiration. He hadn't felt it before while worrying about Chuxue, but now that he saw her, he finally felt the discomfort.
Seeing the sweat on his forehead, Chuxue felt a pang of sympathy: "I was just called in for questioning. Why are you so anxious? Didn't the doctor say not to move until the wound has scabbed over?"
Seeing his wife's serious expression, Fu Yan Cheng quickly tried to lighten the mood: "Wife, don't be angry. I just got anxious and couldn't think of anything else. Although I neglected one thing to attend to another, doesn't this show how important you are to me? Let's not be angry, okay?"
Chuxue laughed in exasperation at his words: "Who's angry? Anyway, whoever suffers knows best."
She had seen him frown several times, and from his little movements just now, she had guessed what was wrong: "Alright, hurry up and go find a nurse to re-dress your wound. The chicken soup is almost ready too; I'll be up there in a moment."
Fu Yan Cheng, however, was unwilling: "I'll go up with you."
