Chapter 1710: You Little Glutton
Liu Chuxue saw how excited she was, patted her shoulder, and said, "If you keep delaying like this, the train won't wait for you."
Zhang Yanyan finally remembered she was rushing to catch a train: "Oh no, oh no, I got so excited I almost forgot the main thing."
Liu Chuxue glanced at the watch on her wrist: "Alright, hurry up then."
Yet even so, all the way to the train station, Zhang Yanyan chattered nonstop: "Liu Chuxue, when I get back, I'll study first aid with you too; that way, if something happens later, I won't just stand there panicking without being able to do anything."
Liu Chuxue thought that was a good idea: "Sure, after the New Year when I'm back, I'll explain it all to you properly."
The two arrived at the train station right on time; Liu Chuxue didn't go in to see her off, took the items off the bicycle, and said, "Alright, I won't go in; you take care."
Zhang Yanyan waved at her: "I'll bring you something delicious when I return; thanks."
Liu Chuxue waved back: "Go quickly; if you dawdle any longer, you really won't be able to squeeze onto the train."
Zhang Yanyan carried the things and rushed into the station, shouting as she ran: "If I really miss the train, I'll just come to your place to mooch food, mooch drinks, and mooch the New Year."
That sounded like a joke, but if she really missed the train, she probably wouldn't be able to go home for the New Year at all; after all, tickets in these days were truly hard to buy, with plenty of people queuing up in the middle of the night during this period.
When Liu Chuxue arrived home, Auntie Wei was leading Gu Xiaomi in frying meatballs.
A few days earlier, she had taken quite a few ingredients out of her space, found an excuse to bring them back; now Auntie Wei was overjoyed, busy these past few days making meatballs, lotus-root sandwiches, crispy pork, and even braising two large pots of meat. Auntie Wei said that for the New Year, she should send some to her husband's family and her own family to show her appreciation.
I pushed the bicycle into the courtyard, and the three little ones rushed over first: "Mommy."
Liu Chuxue quickly propped up the bike, squatted down to catch the three little ones, and kissed each of them squarely on the forehead: "Are you cold? Still running around outside?"
Lebao shook her head: "Not cold, not cold; Grandmother Wei's meatballs are so delicious."
Liu Chuxue gently pinched her daughter's little nose: "You little glutton; you can't be greedy, or you'll get indigestion."
Lebao nodded her little head: "Mm, Grandmother Wei said that too; Lebao isn't being greedy."
Seeing quite a few things hanging on Liu Chuxue's bicycle handlebars, Auntie Wei said, "We've got plenty of food for the New Year; it's likely we'll have leftovers even until the Lantern Festival."
Liu Chuxue knew she had misunderstood: "I was thinking that the day after tomorrow is the three little ones' second birthday; I planned to make them a birthday cake with my own hands tomorrow afternoon, so I prepared some ingredients."
Auntie Wei slapped her own forehead: "Your mother-in-law came by this morning and mentioned this too; she even said to ask you when I got back."
Liu Chuxue smiled: "We'll just celebrate their birthday at home ourselves; no need to make a big fuss, or it wouldn't be fair to the other children. I'll call them a bit later and ask them to come over for lunch the day after tomorrow if they have time."
Hearing her say that, Auntie Wei replied, "Alright; I'll cook a whole table of good dishes, and we'll celebrate at home."
But the moment she finished speaking, someone outside shouted: "Comrade Xiao, there's a phone call for you."
It was someone from the Beijing Liaison Office in the courtyard just ahead.
Ever since they moved in, those people, knowing she studied at Peking University and that Fu Yan Cheng was a regimental-level cadre, had said that if anything came up, she could just call them instead of running to the distant public phone booth.
Anyway, when they made calls, they didn't use the service for free; saving some steps was a good thing, and it was convenient for them.
No need to ask; it was definitely Fu Yan Cheng calling.
